How much fat to eat

fat
ketogenic

I found this link and realised some people may not have discovered Dr Eric Berg. I love his videos, usually short and to the point, and he has tried all of what he teaches on his patients, so it’s from experience.

Also he’s making his own line of zero sugar Icecream .lol

Here’s a very good video on how much fat you should when eating Ketogenic from his perspective.

Yes, Eric has his moments, except for the body type nonsense…

Would be interested in @amber’s take on his claim that you need “lots of veggies”. First time I’ve heard someone make the claim that ketones are acidic, too. Would want to see the science behind that claim before taking it seriously.

YES…wow…I agree!

#5

Yes, I’m concerned with a lot of videos that Dr Berg puts out there. Not sure where he comes up with a lot of the stuff. He says you need to eat vegetables to prevent gout and kidney stones…what?! That doesn’t make sense. I also don’t understand his discussion on limiting your dietary fats…to burn your body fat. This is a CICO approach. It’s not about grams or calories, it’s about hormones, metabolic rates. Dr berg should listen to the 2 keto dudes podcast posted yesterday, and get a better understanding of the fallacy of CICO and learn about metabolic rates during the famous over feeding experiments.

He’s got some really bizarre videos, too. Body typing videos are really really bizarre.

In his apple cider vinegar video he states that it wòrks (for a list of ailments) because it contains acetic acid. Ummmmm. Hello. All vinegars contain acetic acid.

There are so many information “holes” in his videos. I strongly caution people when they watch them.

I was trying to find the best way to describe what I think of Dr. Berg’s videos and this fits perfectly.

Some of his videos have helped me…but I agree 100% with your opinion on these.
Eating vegetables does help your liver to become less fatty.

(Linda Bertolini) #8

I think veggies (especially greens) should be an integral part of keto, but I think he goes overboard on what he advocates should be eaten

(Mary 🌹 ) #9

Yes…but…(10 servings of veggies)? ? ? Not me…I would GAIN and be OUT of Ketosis!

(Stephen Price (Lythix)) #10

I guess, as always, question everything, and show me the science.

He’s definitely giving better advice than the eat low fat doctors.

#11

Oh yes…better advice…but, peppered with inconsistencies. That’s the concern. It’s like a doctor saying “don’t smoke, it may lead to lung cancer…and don’t wear blue sweaters, because blue increases potential for migraines”. Half is correct, and the other half is opinion without any science to back it up.

It’s like having a map. There is no map that is perfectly accurate, but it’s still useful to find your way around a city.

As long as you know the map may be sus, you are fine. Take it with a pinch of salt (depending of salt is good for you or not, this week)

Believe I’ve heard Dom D’Agostino on a few occasions make comments on Ketones being acidic. not sure of the actual number but once you reach up to about 5 (could have been a little higher???) you start pushing blood into an acidic condition and of course if Ketones get up to 20+(not at all likely if your not type 1 diabetic) you are definatly into Ketoacidosis range.

(Stephen Price (Lythix)) #14

The science of it, is that Acid/Base is a relative term.
It all depends what you are comparing it with for it to be acidic or basic.

from Wikipedia:
Both acetoacetic acid and beta-hydroxybutyric acid are acidic, and, if levels of these ketone bodies are too high, the pH of the blood drops, resulting in ketoacidosis, a complication of untreated Type I diabetes, and sometimes in end stage Type II (see diabetic ketoacidosis).

Sorry about the link, I just really love how the forum embeds it into the post.

(Linda Bertolini) #15

I agree wholeheartedly with you. No way would I or could I eat 10 servings of veggies - heck I eat only one or two times a day as it is.

(L. Amber O'Hearn) #16

Sorry, I haven’t watched his video, but I don’t know of any context in which “you need lots of veggies” is supported by any science.

As to acidity, if I understand correctly a ketogenic metabolism is more acidic, but well within healthy normal ranges. That’s why “ketoacidosis” is called that, because the acidity is getting into extreme levels under that condition. Perhaps it’s the old ketogenic/ketoacidosis conflation at play for him.

I’ve watched it. I have one comment:

Fiorella, Berg has often stated his opposition to CICO. I’m not sure how you’ve arrived at the suggestion that he supports it ? He is, very, openly critical of CICO.
Likewise, a person in fat burning ketosis WILL burn dietary fat first. Experimenting with the quantity of fat is a good way to find your ratio as it relates to body fat burning. It helped me through a serious stall.
…and most of his high leafy greens insistence is related to preventing a fatty liver through the production of glutatione ,the effects of choline and the flushing of fat. ( not to mention they are some highest nutrient dense foods one can consume )
In fact, though, he also states that if one is prone to kidney stones, they should be aware of the oxalates in cruciferous.
Obviously, I’m a fan of Dr. Berg… and for good reason, following his protocols, closely, I have lost 90 lbs. and 5 pants sizes since Dec. 2016.
There is some contradiction in some of his early vids from 10 yrs. ago, but I feel that over the last few yrs. he has nailed keto pretty well. He’s, certainly, one of the strongest advocates of it on youtube.
His tweeks can be challenging to many, though…

He also claims vegetables are needed to prevent fatty liver disease from keto…

#20

Yes which makes little sense as keto very quickly reverses fatty liver disease
