How long can you fast without harm?

Daughter sent me some pictures. The last one was a few days ago

Well, officially Tuesday here at 12:30am in Missouri. Came here for trout fishing. I will not be able to weigh until I get back to Texas. (I weigh in the buff and I think the hotel personnel might frown at me trying to weigh that way in the gym. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) At 11p tonight it will be day 56 of my fast. Today while on the river fishing I became dizzy when standing from a sitting position. I also became dizzy from bending over, then raising back up. I am really amazed at a few things. I went to get new pants, and from a size 52, I am now a 42. I have no struggle sitting at a table while others eat. I drink my coffee, tea, water in content, while whoever I’m there with eats. I fit in movie seats now!!! I cleaned the trout My dad and I caught without having to sit down and rest because my back was hurting. I am saddened by the fact that I allowed myself to get so overweight without doing something sooner, however I am pleased that I still have time, and I am taking the necessary steps to end this life well. Thank you everyone!!!

Awesome report, dude. :+1:what did you do for the apparent orthostatic hypotension? Salt? Were you possibly dehydrated from the trip and not drinking enough? And did it go away with corrective measures?

(Jerrett Scott) #68

I found some salt packets to swipe at a gas station, and drank some water

(Trish) #69

And then you felt perfectly fine again?

(Raj Seth) #70

Can’t change what happened a second ago. But you have taken charge of the rest of your now likelyblonger life!
Congratulations on your resolve and progress. I’m looking forward to being a centurian myself. Any week now, any week…

(Jerrett Scott) #71

Weighed, 326 lbs!!!

(Jerrett Scott) #72

Woke up today non the worse for wear!!! Working on day 60!!! At 11pm tonight it will be officially 60 days since the start of my fast. I weighed 323 this morning and felt great. Going to the doctor Tuesday to get checked out. Thank you everyone for your knowledge and help!!!

(Trish) #73

Please report back to us what the doc says and does and also any test results when you have them. Thanks.

(Jerrett Scott) #74

I will.

This is simply an excellent story.

I am utterly proud of you and excited for your progress!

I am a formerly 333 pounder that weighed 174 this morning. I KNOW how much better you feel already.

Believe me…

Congrats and keep doing what you’re doing.

(Jerrett Scott) #76

Thank you all so much!!!

While I’m still more skeptical than supportive, I am interested in any data you come out with at the very least. I’m more considering eventual metabolic slow down because we only get a certain amount of calories per pound of body fat a day. At a very high weight, it’s probably not as big a concern. But, I’m not sure.

One article I read has interesting input on fasting regarding this energy expenditure from fat.

This would not apply until his bmr is higher than he has body fat to burn. I only have 20-30 more pounds to lose and my body fat can still support my bmr. I think Jerret can safely fast pretty much as long as he wants to. Sounds like he is doing great. I only did a 23 day fast as my longest. 60 is pretty awesome.

Just to clarify to other readers in case it isn’t clear… 20-30lbs to lose is to be added to the rest of body fat you will have remaining to get total fat stores which can supply energy.

e.g if you will be left with 40lbs of fat (20% BF on a 200lb frame, 25% on 160lb), then you have 60-70lbs to provide energy right now.

By @richard’s energy calculator, 70lbs would produce about 2200 kcals per the 31-33kcal/lb/day energy release - plenty for most people. When you hit 40lbs of total body fat, you are closer to 1300kcal/day which you can do for a few days maybe but it wouldn’t be particularly great and you might want to supplement with fat (to maintain BMR, minimize insulin response and enable autophagy).

Just read your story- very inspirational. I am down 30 lbs doing keto in about 70 days and have 50 to go. I use IF, but am ready to step it up and try some multi day fasting. Thanks for inspiring me!
