How long before ketosis

(Frank) #1

Hi,

I have started out for the third and final time on Keto on Monday.

My weight has dropped 3 pounds in 4 days, but the Keto sticks are not changing colour (only started yesterday using them).

How long does it take the average person to get into Ketsosis, I know there are a lot of variables to consider but I was wondering what people’s experience is?

Before when I did this, the sticks were changing colour after 3 days.

Thanks

F

Focus on the process and the results will happen. Test your urine 2/week

The average person (someone who is insulin sensitive) could be in ketosis when they get up every morning.

I started casually and it took about 2 days for me to get the first symptoms of carb withdrawal.

Thanks guys, you are right focus on the process but I am so impatient. :grinning:

It took me around 2 weeks to really get into ketosis according to the sticks. Which don’t work worth a crap btw. So, you’ll probably be in ketosis at around a week as long as you keep your carb count low. Watch the hidden carbs. They sneak em in all kinds of stuff.
Stick with it. Ive been on keto for around 3-4 months and down to 211 from 245. I don’t count anything except carbs and don’t fast and don’t worry.

Agree with this. If its used just to lose weight, when you stop, it will all comeback.

It is not just for weight it is to develop healthy eating habits. I find when I do keto I eat veg and a little fruit.

I have done this lost weight and when I quit it goes back on.

Yes, your body will immediately gain weight once you’re off keto, approx 4.5kgs, depends on the person and how much muscle they have. Since the body prefers carbs, it will replenish glycogen stores immediately. This is where the term “water weight” comes in since glycogen is approx 75% water. So for every 250g of glucose your body wishes to store, it will weight 1kg due to the water.

Also, Not sure what situation your body is in, but for most of us, it took decades to derange our metabolism. Richard Morris on here talked about how our fat cells become insulin resistant and damaged over time due to chronically high insulin levels. Fat cells normally live around 10 years before they die and new ones are formed. So to gain their insulin sensitivity back, it would take 10 years to swap out all your old fat cells with new fat cells that have never seen insulin levels sustained at a high level. Once that happens, your body would probably act like it should when processing carbohydrates.

Wow ten years, I thought it would have been a quick process foolishly.
I don’t know if I am insulin resistant but would not be surprised if I am as I am addicted to sugar so have eaten loads of sweet stuff and my main diet was meat and starch in some form.

I am down 5lbs in a week so guess that a lot of that will be the glucose in my muscles and liver?

Glucose and water

(Frank) #12

I thought so, this week should be fat loss week then :grinning:

Yes ! but …
Irrelevant.

Over the next year, you’ll lose lots.

Probably a bit more the next year.

After that, if you want HTN, DM, CAD, obesity, Metabolic Syndrome … let me know … I can tell you the carbs you’d need to get there.

(Frank) #14

Thanks I have obesity but well for a couple more days more until I drop another 2 pounds.

Take your point and very valid.

Are we allowed to eat mayo?

(Steve) #16

You’re “allowed” to eat whatever you like - but if you want to stay in ketosis, you should try to keep your carbs down (below 20g/day ideally).

Looking at Hellmann’s Real Mayo, they say it’s high in Omega 3’s (so, that’s good) - and myfitnesspal says that Hellmann’s is carb free.

So, have at it!!

We are allowed to eat anything you want, the thing you need to understand is how it will effect your health and the state of keto. Primary rule is less than 20g of carbs/sugars net a day. The idea is to keep well below that not hit that as a target.

Short answer yes, but you really should avoid anything with seed oils in it, which is pretty much every mayo jar at the store I have encountered. Most have soy oil in them which is probably the worst veg oil there is for inflammation. There many recipes for homemade mayo here. It won’t effect keto if you do use it just be mindful of the possible reaction it could cause or inhibit reduction of inflammation which for me was one of my top 5 reasons to stay with this way of eating(WOE)

At it’s core, mayonnaise is egg mixed with oil and a touch of acid. That is very keto.

When you buy it in the store, check the labels. Most are fine but occasionally they put sugar in, especially if it is flavored.

Also good are Béarnaise and Hollandaise, which are variations on egg with butter.
