I’ll keep this short and sweet. I’m curious about how important remaining in Ketosis is for weight loss after being fat adapted?
How important is being in actual Ketosis?
I don’t think ketosis is needed for weight loss. There are certain health benefits that come from ketones (possibly including suppressed appetite) but weight loss is not one, as far as I understand it.
I don’t worry about staying in ketosis anymore, for me it’s about having the metabolic flexibility to dip in and out of ketosis according to what my body needs at the time.
If I stay at 50 carbs or under, I am in ketosis. For me, personally, if I went “out” of ketosis that would mean I was on the slippery slope to 100, 150 carbs. I don’t want to end up going back there, so for me, 50 is the limit, and I stay in ketosis. Also, working on getting my BG down, so lower carb is best for that.
If you’re in Lipolysis, you’re in Ketosis. The real question is : “If I’m Lipolytic, does it matter what level excess ketones test at?”. The answer is No.
What about autophagy? Do you not need to be in ketosis to
enter autophagy? My impression this phase was healthy in
losing weight, dealing with cleaning up the “junk” left over
from carb abuse. Let me know if I have this wrong please.
Autophargy occurs during extended fasting and requires no intake of any nutrients for 24 hours plus.
Ketosis will occur during extended fasting by default, but being in ketosis whilst also taking in calories doesn’t allow autophargy.
As far as I understand it…
I don’t consider it overly important considering I can never truly test the level of ketosis anymore. It was easy in the beginning but mix fat adaption and results are construed.
I’m very fat adapted, I never get high readings on my blood meter because my body is using those ketones effectively.
Even when I do fast, I think the highest reading after 72 hours was 2.1, I then worked out and they dropped to 0.3, assuming because my body had just used them all for the workout.
I’m naughty sometimes but I never exceed 50g and if I do I just start a fast.
My blood meter is becoming redundant.
Wondering if anyone has debunked Phinney and Volek’s optimal ketone range of 1 - 1.5 to 3? I am curious because they say at that point, hunger suppression sets in and BG levels drop. I am still hungry and running slightly high on BG. I average 1 every day. I have only made it to 1.5 once in six months. I am thinking I need to reduce my carbs further.
I relate to that @Regina. My blood ketosis levels past week or so range is
2.3 (1.5-3.1); Blood Glucose 110 (100-117). I look at carb average intake -
below 15, fat at average of 74%, protein at 22%. I am a little flummoxed.
Not comparing to you, but the “trend” seems similar and would like BS average
near or below 100 and Blood Ketone about 1.5 to 2. Lately hunger suppression has
lessened with the 16/8 to 18/6 intermittent fastening. Any advise, anyone? Reason
I am fixated on BS and Ketosis is that I am prediabetic A1Ca = 5.56 and have been
at that level for 3 years. Time to get off the dime and lower or T2D will become
unavoidable. I have lost 20 pounds since 7/17, and inches are being lost with
Ht/Waist Ratio from .63 to .57 - my goal is to get below 0.50 (healthy ratio).
I really just started tacking BG in the past two months, but not every day. I would like to get down to at least the early 90’s, but no such luck. I have always had an ok reading at the doctors. Lost the weight and inches, but to me BG is a priority now. One time I cheated with a glass of milk and two hours later BG was 150!! That was kinda scary. If I stick to under 30, BG seems to be 100 at all times of the day, no big spike after eating. The good news is, (or bad) is that blood meters have a 15% variance. I own two, and when I am 101 on one, I am 96 on the other. So just keepin on keepin on, the past couple days 8 something carbs. Surely by tomorrow the BG will be down. Everyone just has to find their own sweet spot. Some days can do IF. Others, horrible stomach ache between meals.
Looked at Cindy’s answer about fasting made sense. I then went back
and reviewed BS in a.m. and the previous day’s meals. I had been
packing in the fats on that evening meal which I ate around 4 p.m.
I was doing that because I was moving to a 16/8 or 17/7 intermittent fast.
I noticed my BS were above 98 in the a.m. when I started the fast regime
about ten days ago. But it was not the fasting that was a factor. It was
my eating the majority of my fats for the day at that evening meal. I am going to
cut back, be conscious of the amount of fat and balance between the
two meals I eat each day. Let you know how it works.
and see if the BS come down to more reasonable ranges.
Thanks - will take any and all advice. Am thinking about ACV but hearing different results.
