How do you plow through a meal?

Am I the only person who has always consumed all of one thing on my plate before starting on the next thing, and so on? My parents and sibs would make fun of me weekly at dinner.

I also eat the dumbest thing first and save the best thing for last. I think I handle this woe so well because sometimes there is only one or two things on my plate and very little decision making is involved. I don’t care if food touches, but I rather it didn’t.

One of my very distinct memories of living in North America for a year was how everyone at like that - eat one thing, then the next, then the next.

I remember it because it seemed so BIZARRE.

I also eat the dumbest thing first and save the best thing for last.

Yeah, I definitely work in that direction as a general rule - get rid of the hardest thing first.

I think I handle this woe so well because sometimes there is only one or two things on my plate and very little decision making is involved. I don’t care if food touches, but I rather it didn’t.

Yeah, same. Apart from the touching thing, I don’t mind that. You’d struggle at Pickle Dave’s

OTOH, my wife gets exasperated if I move the couch because it doesn’t line up exactly with the AV unit three metres away…

My wife and son eat the same way and even though I’m used to it, it does drive me a little crazy, especially when I make a conscious effort to create a meal with elements that complement each other in flavour i.e. best eaten together. And they’ll leave their steak until last and sometimes say “hmm this steak’s a bit cold”, like it’s my fault!

I’m the complete opposite, I shovel everything in together.

Yeah, my dad shoveled more than one thing on his fork at a time and I couldn’t handle it. I thought it was so gross. Of course, I’ve grown up since then but when I’m alone with my food I like to eat it my way.

And @juice, no everyone doesn’t eat like that in the US. Only a few adults and all the toddlers.

It was a long long time ago

Funny, buddy, funny.

Funny, because I do indeed eat this way, but also totally opposite. Think it matter more as to what I’m having. Sometimes eat some of each, until the plate is empty, but other times I do indeed eat one item at a time. … And yep, I like your concept of leaving the best for last! :+1:

So yeah, I have many methods of finishing off a plate, but the end results are always the same. … and no, food touching isn’t an issue, but I do try to limit it. Just the damn plates can sometimes be too small.

Truth!

Maybe something this size would be more to the gentleman’s liking?

#9

Yes sir, that it would indeed! … Minus the sushi, being I’m not a fan. … Like mine cooked.

I used to be real methodical in how I would eat one bite of each item so that all the different foods were finished at the same time, but the older I get the less OCD i have about it. Tonight I had sauteed broccoli and cabbage with chicken wings. I ate all of the veg first so my untensil works was done and then I could use my hands and focus on the wings.

My step dad would eat like that, nothing could touch on his plate and he would eat one item at a time, he would grab a coke from the fridge and almost let it go hot, and would eat his whole meal before opening the can. I always thought he was so weird :joy:

Oh no, Marie, you’re not alone. That’s the way it’s supposed to be done. Otherwise, one could just throw everything in a blender and mix it beforehand.

(Carl Keller) #13

Reminds me of how I used to finish off the last bit of peas or corn on my plate. I would raise the plate to my mouth and use my fork to rake the last few bits off the plate into my mouth. No I won’t win any dinner ettiquette awards but I would do pretty well in a plate licking contest. :stuck_out_tongue:

I got in trouble every single meal for using my fingers to scrape food on to my fork (instead of using the stupid butter bread) but at least I didn’t get sent away from the table for not being able to chew meat (my younger brother) and having to spit it out. He took really huge bites and couldn’t swallow it. (Still a laughing matter to this day)

All joking aside, has anyone else thought about HOW they eat their meal from a Keto standpoint? If we are eating to satiety do we start with protein or fat or carbs? Does it matter? Do we save the fat for last seeing as how its supposed to the final step of satiety? Just something to think about. I’d like your thoughts.

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #16

I eat my veg first and meat second and fat last because I like it the best. If I’m having a pile of bacon I eat the meat off the bacon and save a pile of fat for the very end.

#17

I have thought about this, but to be honest, I sometimes just eat what I enjoy the most, or what I don’t want to eat cold. Which either way, usually means the meat. :yum: … But I have too left it for last to savoy our ‘private time’ Again, usually depends on the plate makeup itself.

(Mike W.) #18

I also have another question slightly on this topic. Do you usually find satiety with what’s on your plate? Do you go back for seconds? Do you ever leave food? I’m the founding member of the “clean plate” club and this is something I’ve always struggled with. I sometimes think it psychologically effects my ability to find society.

#19

I too would be a founding member of that club.

I think you’ve seen enough of my plates, so no, I usually don’t go back for seconds. And I do clear the plate nearly 90% of the time. - That said, I still don’t have an issue stopping when I start feeling full, and the pups simply help me out when this is the case. … But I don’t ever force myself to finish what’s on my plate just for the sake of doing this. (If I fill up fast, which is rare but does happen, I simply will place it back in the fridge and eat it later. Usually the next day.) … But nothing goes to waste, ever.

I leave food now but that was a learned thing as an adult because we weren’t allowed to leave food growing up.
