How do you measure your greens?

#1

There are a few posts that touch on measuring, but greens and other veg can be tricky.

I have 2 oz of baby spinach today. Now, depending on how I shove it down in the bowl, it could be a cup or two cups (I’m eyeballing here). That changes the carb count. Is going by ounces closest too the actual true carb count for leafy greens? Is that just completely wrong?

I’m not worried. I doubt I am going to overdo spinach! But it is more about personal knowledge and best practices.

Do you have a food scale? Much easier to weigh by weight, than a measuring cup.

Oh, and I use grams; it’s much more precise.

Yes, I weigh most things, but I might need a better scale. I have been going by ounces. I didn’t know if weight was best for light greens.

I really wouldn’t worry about greens too much. Cronometer says a cup of cut up spinach is 30g by weight, and only .4g carbs. So 2 cups is not even 1 carb

Get a digital kitchen scale for about $10-$15. Use the gram setting instead of ounces. Weigh before washing. :cowboy_hat_face:

Weight always better than volume.

I just eyeball them but the only time I eat them is at dinner, and it’s usually either broccoli or salad.

I second the motion for a Scale, and using Grams. But I want to amend the wording before we vote, to include “get a scale that has a big enough range to weigh your empty salad bowl and etc… and still not max out once loaded”

Most already do, I’m aware. But I have one that is just excellent in that regard, and I’ve weighed casseroles, glass bowls, even stockpots.

I weighed EVERYthing during my active weight loss phase. It is far better than measuring cups and spoons for nearly everything…except spices and flavorings. I use teensy weensy spoons for that stuff, but not for the purpose of counting carbs. Just for recipe needs.

Just my 2 cents.

The problem with leafy greens, is that they cook down so much, you (well I) need about a pillow case full to make a single serving.

Seriously I used to buy one of those giant bags, which I guess we’re only a pound ? But they would cook down to like a large bowl full, which would be my serving size, along with 16 or or 20oz of meat. Bam, dinner :slightly_smiling_face:

In fairness, I ate a lot less than this while losing the weight, but was eating more than ever right before my back injury. 4000-5200 cals a day.

I always just eyeballed everything. Still lost 120 lbs in 5 months though.
Anyway, I can’t imagine eating so many greens, that it would hurt your weight loss.

Yup. I already have a scale. I weigh most everything, but I will have to mess with it and see if it does grams. I have been on autopilot with it and ounces for ages.

I eat a very large salad of non starchy veggies daily and I track with cronometer. Everey couple of months I weigh the individual veggies on a kitchen scale then enter those values in a crono recipe. After that, from day to day, the proportion of ingredients might vary some but it’s close enough for tracking micros. I repeat the process because what I add and the amounts can change over time.

Got home and checked my scale. It does do grams. Hooray. So grams it is! Thanks.
