How do you break a fast??
How do you break a 5 day fast?
But seriously just have something small to start with. Then a bigger meal a couple of hours later… I doubt you’ll get refeeding syndrome after 5 days.
You don’t know how you’ll react to breaking your first 5-day fast (especially if it is a strict water fast - i.e. your digestive system really has to start up again from a standing stop).
Plan to have time alone near a bathroom (several hours).
Especially, do not eat and then drive or walk or anything - things can change, feeling great can switch to feeling great pressure in minutes.
I have heard people around here say that they have no problem with some nuts, wait 30 minutes and then have a regular meal (they may be experienced or just lucky).
This wasn’t the case for me (and I have no issues like IBS or anything).
I found I had to extend to:
- 100 grams kimchi (hoping for some probiotic benefit) - wait 45 minutes
- 120 grams of sauteed spinach - wait 45 minutes
- 1 regular sausage - wait 45 mintutes
- then a regular meal
This would usually (but not even 100%) avoid intestinal distress (gas pain) and disaster pants.
I can tell you how NOT to break a fast.
Do NOT eat an entire bag of pork rinds.
Just take my word on this one.
That actually might be a better way to approach the topic. Everyone just throw out a way they know how NOT to break a fast. No explanation or details necessary. Mine is:
A dozen eggs
Some people can’t do nuts. I do a handful of macadamias with no issues. Lots of people do bone broth. Just for sure keep it small, and stay near a bathroom until you have a “shooting solution” you know works for you.
Our bodies are amazingly adaptive and resilient. There is no food that works (or doesn’t work) for everyone. Just pick something that you like and know from past experience your body tolerates well.
I’ve done many block fasts, and can go from 0 calories to 2000 in one sitting, with no ill effects. I know not everyone can do this, but I also think sometimes we make it more complicated than it needs to be.
or a glass of psyllium husk fiber or chia seeds, then wait 30 minutes then start eating, but no need to rush the food.
I like to use olives (i like the kalamata olives from Costco).
I like to eat 6-10 olives, wait a half hour to an hour. Then I prefer meat with some fat, maybe a steamed veggie. My favorite is hamburger or roast beef, pork, chicken or tuna with mayo and those steamed packets of riced cauliflower with plenty of salt and butter. Yum.
My stomach gurgles but I’ve never had trouble, and my blood glucose stays nice and low.
Pork rinds…lol
I have been known to eat some unusual things after a fast…my stomach is tough. But I have never fasted this long before
I have are a lot as well after a fast. Food taste sooogood. but I’ve never fasted this long before.
