How did you hear of Keto/ How did you come to Keto?

2KETODUDES podcast.
How did I get so lucky? I was in India on vacation and had time to kill so I googled low carb Atkins diet and came up with diet doctor and 2KD. And a bunch of other noise… I looked at dietdoctor and downloaded 2KD. As soon as I heard the dudes - I knew I was golden.

(TJ Borden) #44

But how did you FIND the 2kd podcast. We need more @Rajseth

I listened to he motivation manifesto on audio book (excellent book btw) in the car and I believe I was binging on some sort of carbage at the time. Anyway I decided right then that I was going to cut out all forms of sugar. After a couple weeks (and lots of headaches and moodiness and cravings) I decided to just bite the bullet and go low carb (I was familiar with Atkins and also if anyone remembers the Suzanne Somers diet :flushed: - basically low carb and food combining) since I already knew the benefits. I googled a list of low carb diets and decided on keto as it was the only one that had scientific evidence to back it up. Plus it just made the most sense, and didnt have a bunch of made up arbitrary rules. Started listening to 2ketodudes found this place and that’s it.

Keto was a wonderful rabbithole I discovered while being honest with myself about my middle aged middle that started up after I turned 50, multiplying my adipose belly fat as the months went by, in circumstances where I’d been unable to keep up with my usual physical training habits. I had a good foundation in health and a generally asymptomatic female biology - but wanted to ensure an optimal climacteric journey.

It was by deciding to start a home routine in slow freeweights lifting, via the work of Fred Hahn (Slow Burn Fitness Revolution), which led me to Dr. Mary Dan Eades & Dr. Michael Eades (Protein Power, Six Week Cure For The Middle Age Middle), and then on to Phinney & Volek and Cristi Vlad books.

I’d already on the “paleo” edge for a bit and when Hahn pointed out that 99% of muscle development/restoration is diet/way of eating, it really blew my mind and I loved it, and it loved me!!!

For me it’s more about Low Carb High Fat essentially - though I like the word ‘keto’ very much, I’ve noticed that ‘LCHF’ seems easier for people to engage. Plus, ketosis states can vary in carb levels - for me it’s not about keeping to the Atkins induction level of 10-15gr carbs. After my initial two weeks I went up to 50 total carbs/day on lazy keto and continued to progress in recomposotion - and after month 6 up 75-150 total carbs a day and/or wine several times a week with continued recomposition and rejuvenation  :herb::coconut::steakcake:

I began Keto this past October - after 4 FRUSTRATING months of busting my butt at the gym doing a vigorous workout 5 days a week, watching everything I ate and, after all of that…losing 4 whole pounds! Because I STILL had 100 pounds to lose… I KNEW this was NOT going to cut it for me!

My husband told me about someone in his office who had lost 40 pounds in two months. He wanted to lose some weight as well and we decided to go Keto together. I advised him that I didn’t have to lose weight THAT quickly; I just wanted to see some reasonable results for my efforts. He advised me that he wanted to wait until after the holidays to begin. I told him, “You go right ahead… I’m starting NOW!” (And I haven’t looked back!). He started with me and as of today, I am within 21 pounds of my goal weight - having lost almost 80 lbs. My husband has lost about 25-30 lbs. I will share that I have had some weight stalls along the way, but tweaking my macros has helped with that. (I use the Stupid Simple Macros app and have just downloaded the Keto Diet app to keep track of my macros). The last 21 pounds are becoming a bit of a challenge…up a few ounces…down a few ounces…back up an ounce, back down an ounce. Nevertheless, I am still plugging along. I am determined to reach my goal weight (125-130 pounds) and I vow I will do whatever it takes to maintain so I NEVER have to lose this much weight again. I’m a couple weeks shy of my 62nd birthday and have siblings who have HBP, are morbidly obese, have Type 2 diabetes, have had several strokes, etc. I want to do all that I can to get myself healthy and stay that way.

I LOVE the Keto lifestyle because it has had such a positive impact on my health! When folks ask me how I lost the weight and I explain keto to them in basic terms, they ALL “freak out” over the amount of fat AND fat grams I consume every day. I tell them I recently had a complete blood panel done by my PCP and my numbers (blood glucose; LDL, HDL, etc) were absolutely amazing! My PCP told me, “I don’t know what you are doing but keep it up!”

I look forward to eventually reaching my goal weight and then, I am going to have to figure out what everyone does to help maintain. But I am not going to get ahead myself just yet. Right now, I am just taking things one step at a time.

First I tried Atkins about 45 years ago but when I read that I could eat all the protein I wanted I ate way too much – I had already broken my appestat and had no idea when enough was enough. Fast forward through many other diets and I came across Dukan which worked for a while but when I went on holidays to Mexico I knew I couldn’t do both lowcarb and low-fat so I opted for just lowcarb and ate lots of bacon and sausage etc. I lost weight on that holiday so I knew that low fat wasn’t the answer. Finally, after a trip to Cuba where lowcarb was very difficult, I decided to follow one of the vegan gurus on PBS and even though I followed his plan to the letter I started to gain back what I had lost. It was then that I knew that the only thing that would work at all for me was lowcarb so I looked up Jimmy Moore and Livin’ La Vida Lowcarb and started to follow his podcasts. This led me to keto and fasting and Dr. Jason Fung and the 2 Keto Dudes. After being on 2 kinds of insulin shots and other diabetes meds I am now med free and about 90 lbs lower than my highest weight. It has been a long slow road through many ups and downs but the downs were all on some form of a lowcarb diet. I still have about 100 lbs to go but I know I am finally on the right path.

About 5 weeks ago I spent some time traveling with a new friend who is ADHD, as I am. He thought his year long keto eating had helped. He said he’d also lost weight.

So I am giving it a go. And I’m wondering if I’m beginning to feel some benefits, a reduction in the emotionality of ADHD. I feel quieter and gentler which I interpret as reduced impulsivity. Maybe.

Middle-aged mom of two kids, never lost all the weight gained during pregnancies, and added in 20 or 30 more pounds over time. Never athletic but always “active.” A lot of credit is due to the doctors and physician’s assistants I’ve been seeing, who are now looking at pre-diabetes as something that should be treated, rather than ignored until Type 2 is the diagnosis. I think things are changing within parts of the medical community here.

A1C: 6.4 on the first test I had, and that likely was below my all time high; I’d gone low-carb already.
Now: 5.0 after 8 months of ketogenic eating.

40 lbs. lost in 8 months. I’m lucky, I figure. The basic “severely restrict carbohydrates, lower insulin levels, raise insulin sensitivity” appears to work very well for me.

I really do feel better. There were a lot of times I’d have a piece of pie (and a piece of cake) for dessert, and it was like I could feel increased tension in my body, like the blood was loud as it went through my veins and arteries, like I was struggling…

Diagnosed 2 years ago with a fatty liver. Started to get pains from my liver last fall. Also started to get discolouring in some of my joints that was suggestive of acanthosis nigricans - so I was pretty sure I was pre-diabetic. My doctor wasn’t all that helpful, other than making mild suggestions to cut back a little on the carbs and sugar. Had lunch with one of my former employees that’s still at BlackBerry (February) - he was only having bacon and eggs on his plate…asked why there was no toast or home fries and he started telling me about the ketogenic diet - how it worked, how it was all the rage at BlackBerry - how one of my former peers had lost 60 pounds and “you wouldn’t recognize him!!”.

Needless to say, I went home, did some googling for a few hours and found this site…and started to learn.

A friend of mine at work was at an appointment with her bariatric doc and he recommended Keto for her, and directed her to the Diet Doctor website , and she passed along the info to me… February 2018, i have been eating as few carbs as possible ever since.

Ron
I didn’t either. As you know, I can be a little critical of various programmes or podcasts, but I don’t remember thinking they got anything wrong when I watched this programme.

It was 2013 and I was entering my second professional softball season. I wanted to be pretty aggressive in my training in the off season, and shedding some extra baggage was part of the plan.

I was wandering around on reddit and a post from a r/loseit that mentioned keto, and down the rabbit hole I went! I went hardcore for the next year, including my professional season on keto. I lost about 45 pounds.

After my season ended, I got overly confident in my ability to have a flexible metabolism and not regain. I was wrong…I regained slowly over the next 5 years, intermittently keto-ing in between. I ended up 25 pounds heavier than when I originally started keto.

September 2017 my fiancé and I restarted and I’m back down lower than I’ve been since I was in high school. We’re probably never going back. I’ve lost 80 so far and I’m finally at a size I could be happy with, although I’m going to continue and see what happens.

I lurked around r/keto until 6 months ago, when I found this forum. r/keto has turned into a very pro COUNT YOUR CALORIES CICO CICO CICO place and I am just not interested in hearing about it any longer, so I stick to this forum. Any suggestion that counting calories isn’t the One True Way gets you called a Koolaid drinker now. Folks are much nicer here anyway.

I came here through fasting. I knew I needed to change when some work colleagues and friends had heart attacks: I had tried 5:2 fasting a la Michael Moseley in the past with some success. So I decided 11 months ago that I was going to do 5:2 properly. So I did Monday and Thursday total fasts religiously for many months, with glorious results.

I had no idea how it worked beyond CICO, I just thought I was losing weight because I was eating less and moving more. And maybe I was! Interestingly part way through my fasting I decided to drop bread, as I was sure I was feeling better when I didn’t eat it, and I had read Wheat Belly.

I wanted to take fasting to the next level when the inevitable slowdown happened. So I researched the fasting mimicking diet by Dr Luongo, that led me to listen a lot to Dr Fung, and he mentioned keto and I searched it, and found the 2KD podcast.

I listened, and was hooked. These guys were entertaining, they seemed to know their stuff, they provided evidence for what they were saying (crucial for me, I am a skeptic), and they invited correction: this is my kind of stuff. And this stuff made sense to me.

Having understood the principles behind keto through the dudes, and devouring their fantastic podcasts, I landed here.

I feel like I am at home.

I learned about ketosis indirectly by doing The Zone diet in the 1990’s. Back then, I was so young and active that eating 40% carbs put me into ketosis. So I got a taste of the treasure but didn’t know what it was, and when I got older, those macros no longer put me into ketosis.

Then, in 2012, I read Dr. Rosedale’s book. I followed his food recommendations and felt really good but didn’t pay attention to quantities, so I was still eating over 100 grams each of protein and carbs. Then, in 2017, I started to read a bunch of books, including Mercola’s Fad Adapted. I did a “light try” last June but wound up gaining weight and so quit. This time, I paid attention to calories as well as macros, and it seems to be working.

In April 2016, after another bloodtest, more statins and more meds for my T2D, and more advise from my doctor to eat less and exercise more I got tired of it all. Over the years my health had deteriorated and I kept gaining weight even with all the meds, exercise and eating less. I decided to do my own research. On the internet I found the dietdoctor, there I found lots of info about LCHF/Keto. There I also discovered Jason Fung, Eric Westman, Gary Taubes, Tim Noakes, Nina Teicholz, Ivor Cummuns, Stephen Phinney and loads of other people. I watched their videos on You Tube. Sarah Hallberg’s TED talk was especially important to me in those early days. She explained it all so clearly. On Facebook I found the 2KetoDudes and they brought me here to the forum in december 2016. It has been quite a journey, I’m very glad I started this way of life. I’m much healthier now, I lost weight and I don’t have to take meds anymore. I’m very thankful to all those people that showed me the way, and I’m still learning more every day.

4 months ago, I heard some people at work talking about Ketosis. 2 months ago one of my co-workers started his Keto Diet, a couple of weeks later he went on a week vacation, and when he came back I noticed right away his weight lost. I asked him what he did and said he was following the keto diet.

I then started doing research and another person from work told me about this forum and the podcast. I started the Keto diet on 6/11 and have lost 22lbs so far. I am so excited to see changes my body is going through and how the cravings for sugar have gone away. Great job Keto Dudes!

I’m a regular listener to the .Net Rocks podcast. When Carl mentioned he had started a new podcast about this new “diet”, I subscribed. That was the start of a new way of life for me.
