How did you hear of Keto/ How did you come to Keto?

I think this would be an interesting question to ask new people on the forum… Just to get an idea of where people are hearing about Keto.

I’m now about 12 weeks into keto and have learned sooooooo much and read so much and been given so much info, that I can’t for the life of me remember where I HEARD about it or what made me think to google it and hence end up finding this forum…

I’ve been doing EF for 10 years now (no… not all in one go :joy: )

So I know about ketosis from fasting…

And I tried a low-ish carb Atkins-y diet a few years back but got the macros all wrong and had an awful time with “low carb flu” and had no forum to ask for guidance and so stopped that attempt.

I am racking my brain, trying to figure out where I heard of keto from…

It certainly wasn’t “recommended” to me by anyone - no other keto-ers in my set of friends, acquaintances and relatives…

I think I googled low carb… Found Phinney and Volek’s book… bought that… and then read about keto…???

How did y’all hear about keto? (Assuming you have a better memory than I do!!!)

Originally as something one of the Kardishan Klan was doing, so I wrote it off as some stupid fad / gimmick / sponsership type thing.

Then, diagnosed PT2D and my wonderful nurse explained the basics to me and told me to google Keto diet and ditch the carbs (that was almost a year ago now)

I first did Atkins in the early 1970’s, when it was generally considered to be a “high protein” diet (fat was BAD!). Not sustainable at that time though. I did lose weight, but I got sick of hamburger patties and hard-boiled eggs. Today, Keto has so many more options.

In February I was searching youtube videos to see if there was any new knowledge about resistance training. Keto is mentioned a lot in those videos. That lead me to talks about keto. Probably one of the Dr. Fung talks persuaded me to try keto for the sake of reducing diabetes risk and to get lean.

I was a about a month into a paleo program and not only did I gain weight, but having really intense carb cravings… no wonder, I was eating a lot of fruit, starchy vegetables and paleo chocolate bars! I googled “intense carb cravings” and found the Diet Doctor website and watched some great videos on sugar addiction. Also found these forums and 2KD podcasts. It was a revelation!

I just stumbled into it through laziness combined with time saving efforts.

An already fit friend had incorporated Keto and fasting to loose the last bit of weight that made him lean and ripped.

While a group of us were at dinner he ranted and pointed at our fat belies, explained some technicalities of how refined carbs affect our energy systems and why we were getting fat.

I will never forget he told me I’d die before him, and I wasn’t having it!

searching the net for t2d which was getting out of control and was about to start insulin injections.

when I read that eating fat will burn fat I thought it was a crazy thing a kind of a joke.

My brother rang me one day and said “I think I’ve cracked the diet thing”. He put me on to Butter Bob … I’ve been keto ever since. God bless them both. Two years in September. 35 kilos released.

I watched Magic Pill on Netflix. It wasn’t the 1st time I had heard of HCLF but was the 1st time I had heard of the advantages of having ketones. Turns out the documentary wasn’t very accurate but it sparked my research that ultimately caused me to give keto a shot.

I was googling for info on diet that may help with my autistic son GI problems. We had tried the gluten free diet 10 years ago with no discernible results. But recently I wanted to revisit it as he is now a tall 6ft teenager.
Keto popped up somewhere in the depths of all the other crap on how to help alleviate autism signs.
Long story short, I did keto, asked our GP and our paediatrician about trying it for our son. Both said, sure give it a go. But I have yet to introduce for my son. Although I daily remind him that meat and cheese good, bread and cereal baaaaaaaaaaaaad. (In a Wallace and Gromit The Curse of the Wererabbit harmless mind manipulation voice)

Rabitt hole…

First I was constantly fatigued and almost falling asleep during a meeting. My coworker was doing an affiliate thing for a supplement drink.
They had a weight loss program with shakes and stuff, also they promoted a carb cycling diet. That didn’t work too well because I was constantly craving carbs on non carb days.
While searching for low carb recipes i stumbled upon https://www.ibreatheimhungry.com

there I read about lchf for the first time, then I stumbled over leanne vogle, through her I came to jimmy moore and megan ramos, then I found the dudes, and now I am here

Best rabitthole I ever fell down to…

I learned about keto on a lose weight facebook page. I had taken a look at how heavy I was looking in pictures and that I was almost to that number I had not wanted to hit- 200 lbs. Before the FB thing I had ordered a “free” exercise video for losing belly weight and then ordered a book on reversing or avoiding diabetes. It was mostly about low carb eating so I started with that concept. I had lost about 10 pounds when I learned about keto and saw incredible results being claimed by someone on that FB page. I got on a couple keto FB pages and learned more and started cutting my carbs down even more. I found Dr Ken D Barry and found his videos sensible and he introduced me to the 2 keto dudes pod cast, which led me to this forum. Oh of course along the way I watched Jason Fung, and tons of YouTube videos from Low Carb Down Under. Plus many others and DietDoctor.com where I watched all their keto and statin documentaries. I’ve also read Good Calories/ Bad Calories and Obesity Code so feel like I am understanding what is really understood about these diets and that not everything that is claimed by those who say this is how it is is true.
It has been a journey and I have been so happy to finally find something that works and has the potential for great health benefits in the future as well!

I think mine was a from listening to either a running podcast where they talked about Tim Noakes and how he was re-writing ‘The Art of Running’ - which made me search for videos about him. Or it was from someone on the Joe Rogan or Ben Greenfield podcasts that I listened to.

I decided to try LCHF and lost 20kg in 3 months, and felt better, so that was it really.

I had done Atkins many years ago so I was familiar with “low carb”. I decided I needed a lifestyle change earlier this year so I started a search on Google. I came across keto and dove right in. I have gained so much knowledge however there is soooooo much more I need to learn. I’m down 40 lbs and I feel so much more healthly and alive!!!

What wasn’t accurate about it? I haven’t been able to see it yet, but people rave about it here.

I was on a wedding forum in the early stages of planning and someone mentioned keto. My first reaction was “that sounds nuts and unsafe”. Then I dismissed it and moved on.

A few months later someone else in a wedding forum mentioned it. This time I decided I should at least do some reading before I formed an opinion. A few hours down the rabbit hole led me here. I read so many old posts while still thinking “no way in fucking hell am I giving up pasta!” Still, I was back lurking and reading here daily.

It was probably another month before I decided to jump on the keto train. I figured I’d already tried (and failed) everything else, so why not? What was the worst that could happen?

Initially heard Vinnie Tortorich on the Adam Carolla Show podcast. I had been listening to him as a frequent guest for at least a year. Then I tried to lose some weight the “old fashioned way” and had a disappointing lack of success. That took me to Reddit, but since 75% of that sub is just people celebrating (bragging) about their weightloss and only about 10% actual usable information I started googling and came upon the KetogenicForums. A big step up!

At the end of last year was asked to be apart of a weight loss study that would start in January. They provided an outline for low carb, but it still was to loose. So I started to read and found Keto to be more workable and I am still doing it now 7 month later and loving it.

I learned about Keto by specifically researching for the best diet for improving cognitive ability and to prevent dementia, starting in Spring of 2017. Initially, I came across a lot of conventional wisdom stating you should eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean meats including lots of fish. I immediately discounted it because that was the diet I was eating at the time and I was losing my cognitive abilities.

The first I heard “ketogenic diet” and “ketosis” was an interview of Dom D’Agostino on some podcast (don’t remember which one) that I came across during my research and it intrigued me.

One thing lead to another, and I started keto in Sept 2017 and haven’t looked back. Soon after I found the 2 Keto Dudes and this forum, and the Salt Lake City Keto group lead by @Chris-Bair, and numerous books and websites on Keto.

I can’t imagine eating any other way. Wish I would have found it years ago. Where have I been? Living under a rock?

Thanks, icky, for posting this question. It is interesting to read the responses.

This forum has been great. I don’t post very often but I read it every day. I have learned so much from you! Thank you!
