Hot Dogs on keto?

#1

I’m not sure if the images uploaded-

If not these are Oscar Meyer’s “natural selects” says angus beef- no nitrates or nitrites, no artificial ingredients, invited, no fillers, gluten free.

Curious what some would say about consuming these as an easy source of keto calories?

I was thinking maybe as a quick easy way to get some protein, or instead of one of those “keto bars” with a lot of stuff in them.

I must say they are pretty tasty!

Thanks!!

Dextrose is another name for sugar but I doubt there’s enough to even matter. I say eat them on occasion.

As for ketosis, net carbs is all you need to worry about.

P.S. Just saw a hack yesterday about using an egg slicer as a quick way to slice up a hot dog.

I’d eat them. I agree with @kyarn there’s not enough dextrose to worry about. If you do the math and assume dextrose the sole source of carb, then there’s only 1 gram per dog. There are alternatives:

PS: nitrates and nitrites in processed meat is not a problem.

I agree that the amount of dextrose is minimal so not a huge deal.

FYI, these are my absolute favorite hot dogs since keto and not a carb in sight.

I 2nd that on the Applegates!!

I just bought some of those for the first time and they are really good.

Eat, and be merry.

@Rebj @kyarn I made a chili cheese dog casserole with these and they are by far the best tasting hot dogs I’ve ever eaten. Even better than Hebrew National in my opinion.

I love hot dogs and eat them all the time, I’ve never felt the need to be in ingredient nazi, not saying I don’t wan’t quality food (funny when talking about hot dogs) but I’m not going to not eat something that’s otherwise fine because of some micro amount of something in an ingredients list.

Love the warning about not choking children to death… That’ll go down well in Scotland, where I believe the Nationalist Socialist government want all children under the age of thirty to be fed porridge mixed to a liquid consistency with Fair Trade almond milk and served via a teat on a baby’s bottle.
Then they can be weaned on Scotland’s National Dish… McDonalds of course !

Not enough carbs in one of those hotdogs that I’d give it a second thought. I like hotdogs. I probably do 2 or 3 of them at a time and that would be the main protein for the occasional evening meal. That’s not a lot of protein, like 18g for 3 dogs, if I read the label right. But that’s about what would satisfy me. Will usually have a couple thick slices of cheddar, a little mustard, the dogs, a bit o’ ketchup, and a pile of sauerkraut on top. That’s my typical. No bun, not even a keto bun. If they’re in season, a slice or two of tomato, a little homemade mayo and a few slices of homemade pickles on top of that. Probably the cheese adds a little more fat and protein but not a lot. And the kraut and other condiments may add a few carbs. But that’s the way I like 'em.

Yup, definitely a favorite. Paired with home-fermented sauerkraut and pickles, for sure. :hotdog: (sans bun)

Joey, when we first started keto (3 years ago, wow, the time flies by), we thought we just HAD to have a bun or bread of some kind. I used to bake stuff like that before keto and was pretty good at it. But after a while, I got that I didn’t miss the bun. And then I got that I didn’t even want the bun. On rare occasion, maybe a couple of times a year, I’ll make a keto bun of some kind to go with something. But it doesn’t really bring that much to the taste party anyway, and usually I’m just interested in what’s going on it. So… instead of starting with bread / bun on the bottom, I just got to putting the cheese there and building upward. It works well for me.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #15

McD’s? Rubbish! 'Tis nae McDonald’s that is the national dish of Scotland, 'tis deep-fried pizza!

(Joey) #16

Totally. Am with you.

(Joey) #17

Isn’t it bangers? (… mash-less, of course., for keto’ites).

(Amy) #18

I like all these ideas for loaded hot dog casserole things! Imma try this! Y’all are creative

I have never tried that brand, but over the past 4 years I’ve been on Keto, I eat hotdogs anytime they are cooked. Not a huge fan of them, but don’t turn up my nose to it.

(Ronald Weaver) #20

Might even be Chicken Tikka Masala ? Followed up by deep fried Mars Bars and sugarless Irn Bru because it looks as if alcohol in Scotland is going to be banned.

“But they’ll never take our Freedom” You’ve got to laugh !
