Hot chocolate recipe please!

#1

I really miss hot chocolates on a cold day but don’t know what I should use instead of whole milk? I’m not too keen on nut mylk replacements as a) I don’t like the taste much, and b) most in the UK have lots of added preservatives, thickeners, sugar, colourings, etc.

Has anybody tried combining hot water with cocoa powder and making it taste a bit creamy by adding some double cream? Would this taste watery or rich like a proper hot choc? Might melting chocolate from a chocolate bar be nicer?
If you have any tried and tested recipes please let me know!

That’s exactly what I do. Big mug of super hot water, heaping tablespoon of cocoa powder, a few splenda packets and lighten with heavy whipping cream. It’s delicious. I also like a dash of salt and cinnamon or ginger sprinkled on top.

It is a bit more watery than proper melted chocolate hot cocoa, but if you’re someone who used to use the packets of cocoa mix, it’s similar in viscosity.

This one sounds interesting. You use Chia seeds to thicken it. Think I’ll definitely try this one myself.

I use coconut milk powder, cocoa powder, clarified butter and Splenda to taste. Whizz it up like bulletproof coffee

I used to have this several times a day, and still drink it occasionally. (Actually I use 35% cream; I’m in Canada.) I enjoy it.

I make it the same way you’d make instant coffee–quick and easy, but there is some cocoa sludge in the bottom of the cup. If you have the patience to heat it in a pot (stirring constantly) it will be smoother and you’ll have no sludge.

Stevia is optional (I seldom add it to cocoa–I like it fine without). A wee bit of Demerara rum is heavenly.

It isn’t super thick, but that never bothered me. Try it and see what you think!

Made the bulletproof hot chocolate today. Very thick and luscious. Personally next time I might add more cocoa and less chia seeds but it was beautiful.

Thank you all for replying. I’m going to try the basic recipe today and if I enjoy it, great! If not, I’ll try the bulletproof recipe once I’ve got some chia seeds - good to know you liked it Chris.

Do you think its nicer adding clarified butter Caryl? What difference does it make to the consistency/flavour?

I like the mildly caramel/fudge taste of clarified butter. I have made it with straight unsalted butter and it is also good!

My hot chocolate recipe is:
tablespoon of almond butter (homemade)
couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder
hot water,
sweetener (Whole Earth, stevia and Erythritol)
topped with double cream, (about a 1/4 of the cup)
I love it.

I have tried hot chocolate from a cafe recently and it was awful, it just tasted of sugar. So I won’t be having that anymore.

Two squares of Ghirardelli 92%
One tbsp butter
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup cashew milk
Sugar free torani (added after)
Salt to taste (1/2 tsp for me)

Simmer and stir until combined.

Fucking orgasmic!!! Foamy and thick!!
