Holy Mackerel!

(Dirty Lazy Keto'er, Sucralose freak ;)) #1

Have you tried this stuff ??? Just had a can, and I think I could have ate 6 of them ! Not that I would, but just saying :grinning: This stuff is off the hook  (I think it was probably netted)

Fantastic nutritional balance too ! ZERO carbs… Lots of great fats…

Anyway, a can or two of this, 2 or 3 hard-boiled eggs, and maybe an avocado… Or some green olives… Sounds like a super refueling during a long hike / climb :grinning:

Any of you eat this ?

I buy this one from Walmart here in North Vancouver, 1 carb per can. Currently 1.47 per can, but fluctuates to as low as 0.98, which is when I stock up. There are couple of varieties with zero carbs but I like the lemon/pepper enough to pay the carb tax on it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Lemon Peppered herring

I love the stuff. Great for omega 3 and small enough to minimize mercury. It’s the highest fat fish… ever…

I but a dry smoked mackerel at Wegmans and love it. I’ll have to try this one.

Bought some canned mackerel at Trader Joe’s a while back as sort of ā€œemergency rationsā€ in case I didn’t have anything around or just didn’t want to cook.

I ended up eating it a few weeks ago, and yes, it was really good. Definitely on my future shopping list.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Kind of the same subject… Do you guys eat tuna packed in oil ? I just bought some packed… I know, I know, olive oil would be better, but vegetable oil… What’s better, no oil, or vegetable oil ?
OR, can you buy tuna in olive oil ? Probably crazy expensive, if you can…

(Michael - When reality fails to meet expectations, the problem is not reality.) #7

I don’t buy anything packed in oil. Water pack or it’s not for me.

(Karim Wassef) #8

Just make sure it’s olive oil

Make that extra virgin please. :cowboy_hat_face:

I wouldn’t eat that vegetable oil tuna.
Vegetable oil is inflammatory and compromises cell wall structure and is not only bad for you but it offers nothing nutritionally valuable. You’re body literally doesn’t know what to do with it. It makes it’s way into the wall of newly formed cells and can cause them to mutate as they’re replaced, and we know what mutated cells are called, right?

Right up there with carbs for long term body damage. Think of it this way, going keto you’re main energy source is fat. Never skimp on getting the best healthiest fats you can afford. After all they’re kind of the most important element of the keto diet followed by quality protein. You can get away with cheap grain fed lean meat if you supplement with high quality fats like lard, bacon grease, grass fed butter, olive, coconut and avocado oils. Here’s a quick article (5 minutes read) with the bullet points on why you don’t want to put that in your body. I would recommend close examination of all your food in the house and getting rid of vegetable oil containing products.

Water pack is definitely better, maybe the best if you’re using it at home where you can add quality oil mayonnaise, or avocado or olive oil that you know is good quality. Sometimes they use low quality olive oil for packing and processed olive oil loses the healthy aspects that olive oil offers and is probably nearly as bad for you as vegetable oil. :cowboy_hat_face:

If I have the option, I go with with fish packed in water. It can’t be a high quality oil if they are using it just to pack the fish, or else it would drive up the price. I usually end up discarding most of the oil anyway so it is wasted.

Thanks guys. I won’t keep buying the tuna vegetable oil, but I will definitely eat those 4 cans  only way I’d throw them out, would be if I found out they had carbs :slightly_smiling_face:lol
In the future, I’ll probably buy white albacore and pour a shot olive oil in it.

(Todd Allen) #13

If you are seeking health you might consider white albacore is considered very high in mercury. Chunk light/skipjack is about 1/3 as bad. Or go with sardines which are considered one of the least contaminated options and are also high in fat & omega 3’s.

(Dirty Lazy Keto'er, Sucralose freak ;)) #14

Honestly, I’m seeking taste, and low carbs  Don’t care for Sardines.

Not too concerned about mercury. When I die, I want to be turned into a big thermometer

Okay, in all seriousness, I put the whole mercury thing, in the same category as non-grass fed beef, farm raised salmon, non-organic produce… All those things which ā€œcould be bad for youā€ but nearly impossible to prove.

In my 54 years, I’ve seen that the people who avoid all of these things, and eat like healthfood freaks, get sick, and die from cancer just as often, as the people who eat nothing but pure garbage.

Now, the people who are lean, and get plenty of excercise, are most certainly less likely to die from a heart attack, or a stroke, or from complications of diabetes.

And this is why I do dirty Keto. I’m only concerned with the obvious stuff.
