I was diagnosed T2D in 1996, but as I become more educated about T2D, metabolism, ketogenic diets, etc., I realize that I likely had crossed over at least 10 - 12 years earlier. I was not a stranger to low-carb dieting; however, I did not ‘find’ keto until about 2 years ago (from Roy Tailor to Michael Moseley to Jason Fung to 2KetoDudes to Brenda Zorn). I began casually, but in October 2017, I really buckled down on a tight IF window, periodic short fasts, etc. And began riding herd on my numbers with 2 meters (nothing succeeds like excess). I pulled an n=1, and on 11/26 quit my metformin. Numbers looked good, but hey, who knows? I saw my internist today - I call him Dr 5%; he is a Master’s swimmer and triathlete, a prof at UT Southwestern Medical School, and has so little body fat that he would have to be totally wrapped in bacon to make a proper keto entrée out of him; a man of “good practices” rather than by-the-book, but not a “keto” doctor. He was speechless at my numbers; I was in tears: FBG -94; Hb1 - 5.4. He pronounced me officially “no longer diabetic” and officially took me off my meds (which I had already dropped). He and I are aware that this is but a milestone, a benchmark along the road; I am not “cured” and I am not bullet-proof, but my god, for any who doubt the power of keto or have sinking moments that it won’t work for them, take heart. I have felt for a long time that I got myself into this T2D ditch through bad food choices, etc. Well, keto and I - and all of you great and wonderful people, the 2KDudes, Jason Fung, Brenda, too many to name, have educated and supported me on this path, and I owe a lot of this success to you. Thank you, thank you, del mero corazón.
Holy Keto, Batman! My labs today 'graduated' me
Thank you, m’dear, right back. Corny though it may sound, it really does take a village … and I’ve got one right here. This means that reversal really, really is within the reach of most everyone. Keto on!
Thanks! I was afraid that it wouldn’t work … for me. I’d been diagnosed a long time ago, and had not always behaved at table. Still and all … keto can seem daunting at the beginning, especially when you begin to really learn and understand some things about the metabolism, food composition, and how we have the ‘on the plate’ thing so backwards as a society and culture. But, one foot in front of the other, and then you see that steak, or those lamb chops, and the butter melting on the broccoli, or the loaded cauliflower, and one-foot-in-front-of-the-other becomes skipping and dancing. Keto works. T2D can be reversed. Man, it’s a whole new day.
What an inspiring story! It gives me a huge dose of encouragement to KCKO!
Thank you, Darlene. It’s still sinking in … there’s good news out there for each of us.
Thank you, Stacy. I just kept up the mantra: It works! I did it! I can do this! all the way home in the car. Man, I wish that sense of empowerment for each of us on this path.
