Keto helped my gallbladder considerably, but I don’t have stones (just a pissy gallbladder) It took a little bit of time for BM color to change - maybe a week??? Too many nuts will still set off my gallbladder. Hope all goes well for you!
Holy Gallbladder Batman
I know someone who was told they needed their gallbladder out. They went to a traditional Chinese Medicine doctor and was treated with acupuncture and herbs. They have never had any problems since then.
I had my gallbladder out a year ago at Christmas. I have had no problems on keto, but I do wonder if fat soluble vitamins are being digested. I decided to take Dr. Mercola’s advice and take enzymes for fat digestion. I can’t tell the difference whether I take them or not.
Update:
- i’m +36hours from consuming 1/4 cup bottled lemon juice and 1/4 cup olive oil without the Epsom salts
- significant consumption of fat and protein
- BM noticeably darker and no longer a chalk-white coloring
The Keto Diet Podcast with Leeann Vogul recently did a podcast with a woman with no gallbladder! Might be a good resource to check out
Another testimonial – I had my gallbladder out pre Keto. I’ve been Keto for just over a year now with no problems digesting fats at all. Good luck!
@Capnbob I had mine out before switching to keto. I have not had any issues. My doctor told me that a lot of it is genes, more than diet. I had apx 40 stones when I went to the ER. They removed it right away. They said it looked like a sack of marbles, lol. I thought that I would have to change my diet from what I read on the internet, but the doctor told me at the follow-up that the vast majority of people are fine to keep eating what they like. The gall bladder only stores bile, it does not produce it.
Thanks Jay! I feel better. It’s been a few days out and I’m able to eat a little bit – not able to get back to keto yet for awhile… but sticking low fat. I’m confident that I’ll be back to normal in a month or so and back in Keto.
however, it is amazing to see the difference and FEEL the difference being out of keto makes.
@ketoartsy I think you can still do low carb and low fat, but not long term because it’s hard on the kidneys.
No gall bladder for 10 years and been fine on keto…maybe I’m just lucky but no issues, so try it and see…once you are recovered of course! Mend well and keto on
I had a gallbladder attack a few months after starting a LCHF diet. The doctor in the ER referred me to a surgeon. I had my gall bladder removed. Since then I have read that high fat diet couldn’t cause gallbladder disease in a few months, but if you already have a sick gallbladder high fat might cause inflammation. Doctors told me my gallbladder was in bad shape, so probably removal was inevitable. BTW, I have had no problems since, but I do take digestive enzymes just because I want to be sure fat soluble nutrients are being absorbed. FYI I am 72 years old. Surgery was a year ago.
