High Fat Low Carb - for 1 year

(Jana) #1

Here are my cholesterol test scores after following LCHF/Keto for one year. I don’t have previous scores, but this does point out that eating high fat did not send my scores sky high.

I also lost and stabilized 65 lbs of weight loss at age 68. As for non-scale victories, I now only weigh once a week or less. Instead, I am measuring inches, because my clothes are getting looser, even though the scale often stays the same.

Cholesterol = 153
HDL = 111
Triglycerides = 34
LDL = 35

Cholesterol/HDL = 1.38
(Ideal-under 3.5)

HDL/LDL = 3.171
(Ideal-over 0.4)

Tri/HDL = 0.315
(Ideal-under 2.00)

One surprise - my total protein was slightly below normal range at 6.3. I don’t ever remember that happening before.

Comments welcome.

I have no idea about this stuff but based on a Google search it looks good to me.

Your HDL and Triglycerides are outstanding,

My genes are the major contributer to the low score of Triglycerides. Many years ago when I was mostly a vegetarian for 7 years, my total cholesterol was only 79. I still have those scores in my file. Believe me that was the most unhealthy time of my life. It’s taken me years to recover my health. So a score of 153 seems robust. :grin:

Here are more scores with some questions.

Fasting Insulin = 4.2
(Range 1.1 - 17)

Glucose = 88
(Range 74 - 100)

HOMA-IR = .9
(Under 1.0 = Insulin Sensitive)

My waist/ht ratio = .645

I read that a fasting insulin score of 3 or less is ideal. I do both IF and EF. Would this method eventually lower my Fasting Insulin and my HOMA-IR scores?

If my HOMA-IR says that I am Insulin Sensitive, how does my waist/ht ratio fit into these scores? I thought that a score above .5 on this measure means insulin resistance.

I would trust the HOMA:IR 1000x more than ht/waist which is merely a predictor and understands nothing about your body shape/type etc. One is an indicator… the other is the actual truth. Great stats. I would think that more time on keto with or without EF would improve insulin further (as others here have proven) but it is already good. Great work!!

Thanks so much for your support capnbob. Wish I had all these scores from 9 years ago, when I weighed 112 lbs more than I do today. I do feel very blessed that a local doctor in this rural town pointed me in the direction of keto last June 2017. Now I am 100% confident that this weight will stay off for the rest of my life!

While on keto since June I’ve lost 72 lbs. People I’ve known for over 30 years do not recognize me. That’s a very strange experience.
