High Blood Ketone Levels

(Nickie) #1

Hi- I’m new to this group and just started Keto about 10 days ago. I’m newly diagnosed Type2 and am on Metformin once a day.

I have a blood ketone meter and my numbers after testing have been between 4 and 5 for the last few days. I’m getting really concerned as I read on another site that numbers one 6 indicate ketoacidosis. Should I be concerned? Eat some carbs?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Your fine. There is almost no chance of T2d that isn’t taking insulin of getting ketoacidosis and the 6 is determined for people who are metabolizing glucose for fuel and not ketones. There are many here that have seen much higher numbers than that and are just fine. Now if you were around 10 I would say you are high but up to 7 or so is no concern at all. I am also T2d so I understand the concern. Just keep an eye on it. Your liver is making ketones but your body just hasn’t figured out what to do with them yet  Be patient, it will.:ok_hand::joy:

Thank you so much! I feel so much better now. I was ready to grab a loaf of bread and then have to deal with the high glucose numbers.

If your pancreas is producing any insulin at all, diabetic ketoacidosis is not something you need to worry about, since insulin naturally regulates the production of ketones by the liver. As the fat in your liver is metabolized, your liver will become progressively less insulin-resistant, and the body’s natural homeostasis will reassert itself.

Thank you for that explanation.
