HI! Introducing myself

(Jeanne Wagner) #1

Hello fellow Ketonians! I’ve had a 6 month journey to get here. Here to this forum, here to Keto, and to fasting. Six months ago I was in a several year downfall and had given up. Type II diabetes, and lifelong weight issues (from age 6). Diagnosed at 36! The women in my family all got diabetes, but not until their 60s. I felt very bad I had contracted it so young. Much research and learning later I now know about how gluten and wheat affect the body and especially insulin.

In six months I have brought my fasting blood sugar down from 277 to 76 (but still on Metformin 1000mg 2/day). However, 4 months of that was just gluten elimination which brought it down 100 pts. I only started dabbling with eating Keto in November (brought it down another 50 pts). Worst month ever to start, but I was excited and didn’t go overboard through the New Year. Then just this week I decided to do 22-24 hr fasts each day this week. I decided to see my doctor this morning when I hit that fasting blood glucose reading of 76 yesterday!! I should have gone 6 months ago, but suffice it to say I have numbers from July 2016. That was the last time I went to see the doctor because I was hiding. I was tired of being lectured, and told I had to go to a specialist next. And I felt like a failure, and I didn’t want to go on a host of medications.

So this morning I got an A1C reading. It was 7.1. Compared to 11.6 in July 2016, it was a definite improvement. I was 14 lbs lighter. My blood pressure 130/70. Improved from 142/84. I will get all my other blood work by next Wednesday.

So here’s the thing… my doctor is a ‘natural doctor.’ Full blown M.D. but wants to help people reach their goals with natural methods. Not quite a functional doctor, but he’s in my city! Easy access. He knew about the Wheat Belly Book. He knows about ketones and the body running off of fat. He thinks fasting is very healthy! I was so worried because they also promote the Hallelujah diet which is basically vegetarian. I had tried that years ago - it was my last attempt at losing weight and getting under control…it just halted at the 6 month mark and no amount of cutting back or the 2 hours of heavy exercise I did each day helped move the scale down. Due to no results that they couldn’t help me fix, and personal financial issues, I gave up after another 6 months.

So I feel very lucky that he is supportive of my Keto and fasting journey. He said what you are doing is working for you so I’m not going to try to tell you to do anything different. He thinks I can be off the medication completely in 3-4 months (I’m hoping for sooner!). I’ll have monthly checkups and I am excited to see the progress I make!

January 2018
A1C: 7.1
Starting weight: 228
Temperature: 98.6 degrees
Blood Pressure: 130/76

Congratulations on your progress! I would like to give you one piece of advice - make Keto yours. There is no one right way to do Keto, if you have found a way to feel great -DO THAT! Be patient with your body, it takes time to heal - and you are doing an awesome job!! This is a great forum to find support. Good luck with your continued journey.

Thank you!

Thank you! Yes I have learned that everyone has different tolerances and we all need to find our own way, and there is so much support here and other places. I started listening to Jimmy Moore’s main podcast LLVLC, and it immediately hooked me into wanting to learn more and to start Keto.

Warning - leaning about keto, nutrition and health can be extremely addictive!! :joy:I found I love learning about all of this and really want to help spread the word.

Me too, but I also know I haven’t learned enough to be able to hold my own during a discussion. One of my friends asked me a lot of pointed questions that I felt needed to be answered by science and I didn’t have the data. I think until I have the cholesterol knowledge and fat knowledge ‘down’ I will refrain from engaging in ‘educating’ the masses. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you that my doctor died last night. He had a heart attack, it was his second one. The first one was several years ago. This is the doctor that encourages people to do the hallelujah diet which is Bible-based, vegetarian/vegan or something like that. And he ate the same way. His father died about two years ago, he was in his 80s, and they ran the practice together. This man was in his late 50s or around 60-ish. He was a very good man and cared about his patients. I am just so sad today.:cry::cry:

I will looki for another Doctor who is a naturopath or is into functional medicine. This is going to be outside of my insurance group, like my doctor who just died was. All out of pocket with him. If I cannot find one close to me soon I will go the traditional route and see what happens. I am still on Metformin, so I need to find a doctor soon because I am halfway through this particular months’ prescription.
