Hello fellow Ketonians! I’ve had a 6 month journey to get here. Here to this forum, here to Keto, and to fasting. Six months ago I was in a several year downfall and had given up. Type II diabetes, and lifelong weight issues (from age 6). Diagnosed at 36! The women in my family all got diabetes, but not until their 60s. I felt very bad I had contracted it so young. Much research and learning later I now know about how gluten and wheat affect the body and especially insulin.
In six months I have brought my fasting blood sugar down from 277 to 76 (but still on Metformin 1000mg 2/day). However, 4 months of that was just gluten elimination which brought it down 100 pts. I only started dabbling with eating Keto in November (brought it down another 50 pts). Worst month ever to start, but I was excited and didn’t go overboard through the New Year. Then just this week I decided to do 22-24 hr fasts each day this week. I decided to see my doctor this morning when I hit that fasting blood glucose reading of 76 yesterday!! I should have gone 6 months ago, but suffice it to say I have numbers from July 2016. That was the last time I went to see the doctor because I was hiding. I was tired of being lectured, and told I had to go to a specialist next. And I felt like a failure, and I didn’t want to go on a host of medications.
So this morning I got an A1C reading. It was 7.1. Compared to 11.6 in July 2016, it was a definite improvement. I was 14 lbs lighter. My blood pressure 130/70. Improved from 142/84. I will get all my other blood work by next Wednesday.
So here’s the thing… my doctor is a ‘natural doctor.’ Full blown M.D. but wants to help people reach their goals with natural methods. Not quite a functional doctor, but he’s in my city! Easy access. He knew about the Wheat Belly Book. He knows about ketones and the body running off of fat. He thinks fasting is very healthy! I was so worried because they also promote the Hallelujah diet which is basically vegetarian. I had tried that years ago - it was my last attempt at losing weight and getting under control…it just halted at the 6 month mark and no amount of cutting back or the 2 hours of heavy exercise I did each day helped move the scale down. Due to no results that they couldn’t help me fix, and personal financial issues, I gave up after another 6 months.
So I feel very lucky that he is supportive of my Keto and fasting journey. He said what you are doing is working for you so I’m not going to try to tell you to do anything different. He thinks I can be off the medication completely in 3-4 months (I’m hoping for sooner!). I’ll have monthly checkups and I am excited to see the progress I make!
