I joined a while back, but figured I should actually introduce myself and poke around the forums a bit. I started keto 17 months ago to get my T1D under control, but I’ve been getting complacent and am tightening up my diet to try to lose those last few vanity pounds. Since starting keto my A1C dropped from my doctor’s goal for me (what a joke) to the level of a non-diabetic. I lost 25 lbs, going from overweight to a normal BMI. My sleep issues, headaches, joint pain, and aphasia (all mostly written off as spending a decade as a diabetic) have lessened or vanished. Even the neuropathy in my feet that I sustained pre-diagnosis has improved.
During that time my husband was diagnosed prediabetic (his doctor’s advice: don’t bother testing your blood sugar, replace red meat with lean fish, and avoid soda - he doesn’t like soda to begin with). He immediately started keto and is back to a normal weight and normal blood sugars.
I actually first discovered keto about 8 years ago, when a lot of my friends were doing it, but most internet resources I found at the time warned T1s away due to the confusion between ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis. After I finally dove in anyway, I found a lot of other T1s doing keto, or Dr. Bernstein’s method, which has been great. It always made sense to me that less carbs would be better, if carbs were the issue . . . but it’s nice to see that the conventional wisdom is finally starting to change. Keto definitely hasn’t been a magic blood sugar control for me, but it certainly makes things easier. Wish I’d discovered all of this a decade ago!
