Rubs/ spices do not penetrate meat. Only salt has the that ability to penetrate meat.
I always salt my meats at least 2 days in advance.
Rubs and spices just sit on the surface.
Try rubbing a a pieces of meat with cayenne pepper and leave it for 2 days. I bet you the internal part of that meat will not be spicey at all.
Try rubbing another piece of meat with salt and leave it for 2 days. It will be seasoned all the way through.

My BBQ rub is salt, pepper, a little chipotle powder.
Good quality meat does not require heavy hand with spices. Let the smoke season your BBQ.
