Helpful Friends......NOT

science

http://www.cookinglight.com/healthy-living/belgian-food-pyramid, my “very helpful” friend tagged me in this post this morning on FB, she thinks that my new idea (as if I am the only person in the world doing keto!!!) on a healthy diet is DANGEROUS. I was also told by this friend that me not eating meals, I am currently doing a 20/4 intermittent fasting regimen, was anti-social. To date, 8 weeks, I have lost weight, have more energy than I have had in years, no longer experiencing brain fog and feel like I have my Hashimoto’s under control. Do I ignore it and let the proof be in the pudding…LOL, or do I post back with the SCIENCE? I am so tired of justifying myself.
Guess I just KCKO!!!

Keep on doing what you are doing. It is working great FOR YOU, her approval is not needed. If she is open to hearing about the science, talk about it with her and if not, spare yourself the frustration of an argument with a person unwilling to consider facts. You keep doing what is right for you and your body.

I’m currently living a lie and not disclosing much about my keto lifestyle to friends, family & colleagues. Recently, a colleague commented on my noticeable weight loss and I explained things by simply saying that I was “sugar free” and it was down to that. A few days later she publicly commented that I was on a “weird diet” in our staff room .
I am happily waiting until I have lost and maintained weight to discuss anything further. Shouldn’t have to but, quite frankly, I don’t need the crap so I am blocking negativity out!
Ps. Keep going. x

:joy: just wait until you try an extended fast and mention you haven’t eaten in 4 days. They’ll want to rush you to the hospital.

I think it’s probably best to not talk about it and not try to justify it. None of anyone else’s business what you eat!

Something @Lucinda approach makes sense to me (saying you’re not eating processed foods, or avoiding sugar). Pretty much no one can disagree with the wisdom of that, but somehow her colleague managed to bug her about it anyway. Some people… :grimacing:

The science behind keto and IF is solid, but in my experience, you can never actually win those arguments. I would do you thing, enjoy your success, and discuss sparingly - only with folks who are genuinely interested, and maybe after you’ve been keto for a while.

A lot of times “friends” get jealous because they can see a difference in you for the better and they don’t like it because it’s not them. I started out telling people i was not eating sugar or processed carbs and was just getting carbs from green leafy veggies. So just keep what you are doing! Be proud!

How sad is it that eating “sugar-free” is considered being on a “weird diet” for SO many people!? Blurg.

I overheard a conversation today in which some folks I knew casually were talking about avocados and how they wondered what happened to make them so popular all of a sudden. They were speculating that maybe there were price drops, etc- I chimed in with, “Maybe it was when we FINALLY stopped lying to people and telling them that fat is bad for you.” They looked at me, stunned… and they both said they’d heard that mentioned, and they were interested in it!

I’m a little more ridiculous with what I’m willing to do- and obviously, we’ve got to tailor what we say in response to the situation, the person, the forum, and our own comfort zone. But maybe, just maybe, we’re the loud voices at the beginning of a dietary movement. What if we’re looking at a cultural paradigm shift, in which we start to believe science, trust what our bodies are telling us, and stop seeing weight as a lifestyle choice and good health and energy as a privilege? How awesome to be early flag bearers, friends.

Just today, I mentioned to a new acquaintance that I’m halfway through a 6.5 day fast. She looked at me in confusion and then said… “Wait, I thought Ramadan was later in the year?” Setting aside… well… a lot of other issues… it AMAZED her that people would fast for anything other than religious reasons.

She then apologized for eating in front of me, “I mean, you’re literally starving.” I told her I ran 4 miles this morning on 5.5 hours of sleep and felt great. It’s hysterical to watch these reactions!!

If you feel the need to say anything, then just say that you are only eating meat and veggies. That usually shuts the naysayers down pretty quickly because who can argue that meat and veggies are “bad” for you?

I was a known vegan at work and then one day I show up with salami cheese and eggs for lunch. Now I’m just that weird person who had to make things difficult during potlucks. Your health is your health and your choice. Whenever you catch a glare for passing on bagels just know you have the science at your back should someone ever ask. KCKO

I totally agree, but Belgium doesn’t!!! Have a read of their idea of a food pyramid. Crazy. I agree with the highly processed foods but not the meat bit.

(Cristian Lopez) #12

Omg I just checked it out
And all I could say was

**”Says the people that made water a food group”

Eat your fruits and veggies kids over here? Belgium is like eat your bread and water😵

(Joe) #13

Also. Not sure Belgium is even a real place… And if it is they are just trying to push their waffle agenda.

(TJ Borden) #14

And beer, and chocolate…actually, it sounds like a magical place

I Feel ya on this

I was the topic of discussion prior to walking in to the main room on Thursday … “ yeah he never gets sick ( they are all sick ) always running around ( none really exercise ) too. Gets a lot done. He eats no sugar ( pastries and pies piled on the table ) or carbs ( false already statement  )…needs to gain more weight ( I’m at the best since high school ) . Should eat whole wheat etc etc “
All this said in a Christian Bible Study Group:flushed::joy:

So I do forgive them all😄

I worked in Belgium when I wasn’t on keto and we ate bread at every meal and I averaged a weight loss of 12 lbs a month. Difference is the bread over there is real from what I could research, but now it is irrelevant now that I am keto WOE

It’s so interesting…I had a co-worker from India with severe gut issues (dairy, gluten etc) who went on a European vacation, ate everything and never had any gut issues. Makes you wonder about the US food policies, to say the least.

When my husband immigrated from Germany, he became lactose intolerant/horrible indigestion problems etc., and relatively quickly too, like within 6-9mos. It wasn’t until I went low-carb and quit buying bread that we figured out it was the wheat. Now he only eats Wasa Bread that is imported and he is no longer has lactose issues. Needless to say, I’m highly suspicious. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
