Hi Carolus
I started the Keto WOE in late 2016 and held it mostly to my self. Then came a phase beginning 2017 where I talked to everyone and everybody and it actually helped some people taking some needed decisions for themselves. Then came a phase where I noticed friends and colleagues’ eyes starting to glaze over and I began putting a lid on it. The people closest to me sort of split into two groups. Those who enjoys when I share my journey and knowledge with them, and those who gets upset. I more or less know how it is with my closer circle of friends and I try to navigate and choose when I bring the topic of Keto up, or the keto lens on happenings around me. I remind myself that it is not ME that makes them uncomfortable, but rather some truths that for now threaten some of the beliefs that they are not ready to give up. Unfortunately the CULT argument is so easily used because it implies that someone is not in his or her right mind and it is really hard to defend one against. I encourage you to forgive your wife as I suspect she knows not what she is saying and she may have some fears and beliefs that she is not ready to give up. Good luck in your keto journey.

Forgot one thing. CULT implies something that is based on DOGMA, meaning a point of view or tenet put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds. Thanks to hundreds of people like Carl and Richard, who constantly investigate, ask questions and explain the scientific proof for understanding the different mechanisms that make keto WORK, I know that I AM NOT BASING THIS ON DOGMA, so, they can call me cultist all they like, it just shows their ignorance, not mine.

I mentioned to 2 close family friends (one who has had gastric bypass and her daughter who has multiple autoimmune disorders due to inflammation who takes CHEMO once a week for them and is still in her late 30’s!!!) that I was doing super low carb, and I got “I could never completely give up carbs.” And I am like, even if it meant you could lose the weight you regained after your surgery? Even if it means you maybe could reverse your inflammation and autoimmune disorders? Even if it meant you could initially lose 7 pounds in a week like I did?

Now I got the younger one to wanna try it because her husband said “Whatever she is doing must be good because it’s working, you can see it!” but she is still so misinformed. We were at Chipotle and I ordered a salad, no dressing (sugar loaded), double meat, cheese, sour cream, pico, and a little guac. She ordered similar but with black beans. She said “don’t you need the black beans for protein.” I am like, I HAVE DOUBLE MEAT, also beans have so many carbs! “Oh…” SO hard to being people along with us. Tried to get her and her family to watch a Taubes lecture, but I think it was too much for them. Also recommended Fathead to them, but they won’t find the time. I hope I can get them to come along, because I feel like it could help them SO MUCH.

I once calculated that I eat about 10lb of net carbs a year.

The average American eats more than 135lb of sugar, just sugar, in a year, that is they eat more sugar in one month then I eat net carbs in an entire year.

Makes me grin to think about that.

If this is a cult, eating keto, then it is perhaps the first cult based on science rather than authority. It is the only cult where the members are continually challenged to question their own assumptions, to insist that others give rational reasons for the views they express, where people will argue over how useful are the data from epidemiological studies compared to clinical trials.

Best Regards,
Richard

Ya know…
The dogma based cult is actually the SAD.

But our robes (and chants) are way cooler.

Our robes are all the smaller sizes that’s for sure!

(Michele) #47

Even if some robes aren’t smaller yet they are covering bodies that are healing and getting more awesome by the day.

Not to mention the fact that our mothership runs on bacon! :bacon:

The first rule of the keto club is “We don’t talk about the keto club”. Because then people start thinking you’re in a cult. Because keto is evil and dangerous and weird. And you must have lost your common sense. Most aren’t ready for the holy message yet and will have to find salvation for themselves.

Not until we are safely back on the mothership.

(Alec) #51

Of course we are a cult. We have all the hallmarks.

I just found out that a friend of mine at church eliminated her diabetes by going low carb.

Her diabetes doctor told her all traces of diabetes were gone and he didn’t need to see her anymore.

Maybe you can tell her that you will quit Keto when you become fully fat adaptive.:sunglasses:

For a moment there I thought your wife was thinking you were becoming a cuttlefish.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread, so much has rang true to me.
I started Keto a year ago after a "health kick " went horribly wrong. Basically, I booked a holiday in Australia and had a “omg I can’t go on the beach looking like this” moment.
I put myself on the ‘buddah bowl diet’, a bowl each day of wholegrains, pulses, vegetables, protein and a dressing . To start with it worked. Then suddenly I gained a stone, felt so ill, IBS, breathlessness and bloating. I went to the Drs believing I had, maybe bowel or ovarian cancer . He ran a whole bunch of blood tests that came back normal. I concluded that I was maybe gluten intolerant and an internet search led me to keto!
It made so much difference to my life and I just couldn’t understand why everyone didn’t want to know about it! I felt like I had made such a tremendous discovery. But I have learnt to just quietly get on with it .
A year on and people are more interested! The change in me is very evident. As someone said the other day - my whole demeanour has changed! I have had a few ‘converts’ but not nearly as many as I expected.
It’s hard to watch people you care about needlessly sufferering because they believe they can’t live without a ruddy potato!

Ordered my robe back in August 2018 with my membership fee. Just realized that maybe we should start a group for swapping sizes… any one wanna swap me an xxl for a l?

Wait a minute… this is a damn pyramid scheme!!! I want my fat back you bastards!!

(Scott) #58

Around here it’s double your fat back!

I love J.P.—he’s so spiritual!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #60

Or better yet, double your fatback! :bacon::bacon:

@Toaste1 I love the idea of a robe exchange. It’s brilliant. Welcome to the forums!

P.S.—I’m starting a new line of candles—made from bacon fat! :candle:
