Got something similar from a cousin, I like my carbs, I looked at him and said, so do I but I like my fingers and toes more. Ended the conversation really quickly at that point

I was at a business lunch recently with my partner and someone we’d recently met who I just learned was keto. It came up because he didn’t order anything and said it was because he was fasting. This, of course, piqued my curiosity and resulted in a 15 minute conversation between us about keto, IF, diabetes, cancer, etc, while my partner just sat and listened to us ramble on and on. I’m sure it felt much longer than 15 minutes to him.

But when you meet someone else who has “seen the light” (huh, maybe it is a cult after all), it becomes a very hard conversation to end, especially when you know of nobody else in your immediate circle of friends and family who shares your WOE and you rarely get a chance to talk about it with someone who gets it, much less is interested.

Oh my.

What kind of life is it when you have to inject yourself with fattening medication just to stay alive?

Maybe he will have a change of heart and give it a try. I hope so.

My daughter told me to shut up about it at Thanksgiving. I want to shout it from the rooftops. I’m turning into a keto snob. When I go to Walmart and see all the overweight people I look in their cart and just shake my head. We’re the 1% ers. Lol. This country is so fat. Ya I said it. 99% of people in this county is fat. Sad but true. I look in their shopping cart and just chuckle to myself. It’s full of junk food.

I certainly know the feeling!

I work as an advertising writer, so convincing people is something I’m good at - and if they’d sit still while I write something it would be great… but yeah, in person it’s awkward.

If introducing a new or novel idea the best way is to raise questions. The mind is much more receptive that way, but I’m going to stop there, or I’ll be giving you all a lecture on copywriting lol

you can still enjoy chocolate (dark, at least 70% and darker), make your own delicious low-carb bread, low-carb pizza and even dessert). If you like to cook and want very good recipes, you can go to www.dietdoctor.com, try the recipes on the site free for one month and after that it’s about $10.00 a month for a membership to the site which is not sponsored by any company. I just love it! On this site, you can also learn about the science of low-carb and keto living and even intermittent fasting if you are interested.

Thanks for all of your posts. I find it most reassuring that I’m not the only one accused of evangelicizing about keto! For me (eight months in and, between my wife and I 75 pounds lighter), I think I’ve become a bit boring and need to pay attention to few other topics of interest so that I’ll have something different to talk about!

Welcome to the cult

@LizinLowell Exactly! Just come up with an excited little 10-30 second testimony and eventually some of your seeds will produce fruit in others’ lives. We do it when we excitedly tell a friend about an amazing movie/restaurant/etc., why not do it with something that could change SO much in their lives.

That’s all sales is, really. We did it with our spouses (if we’re married) and in job interviews. We “sold” our presentation to another. Testimonies are one of the most powerful forms available. We just have to try hard not to over-talk it - as people quickly stop listening if they’re not interested and we keep going.

Go Liz!

I would say keep trying, as the message is way too important to not try to spread it, especially with those we love. My brother just passed away last week at the age of 52 from complications of diabetes. So unnecessary that we are losing our loved ones due to misinformation and lack of knowledge in this day and age. We had a number of conversations about keto over the past 4 years, but regrettably I did not keep up with them and drive the message home enough. For obesity keto is a powerful solution, but for diabetes and other chronic “progressive” health conditions, its a must in my opinion and should be the standard of care if we are to halt the progression.

I totally understand the evangelism and claim to cultism. For a long time many of us have followed the prescribed way to eating/exercise to lose weight and be healthy. When some of us have been on that rat-wheel (lose/gain and some more) for so many years we get to a place of capitulation (It’s just the bad luck of the draw with my genes).
To find something that is relatively simple (yes keto can be simple), that works, that doesn’t leave us endlessly hungry and hunting for food that isn’t going to blow out the diet, it can be like discovering nirvana. Also the list of benefits is not small. So many different issues are often resolved is quite a short space of time, or you see improvements quickly. It’s not surprising we are letting out a sigh of relief. We also want to congregate with our like kind, those that understand us and what we are experiencing. We have our version of ‘that’ handshake. We have acronyms, a collective language, people we follow with a degree of fervour. We want others to benefit from our discoveries; for friends and loved ones to be healthy. Of course we are brimming with enthusiasm. However currently we are the underground religion, we aren’t yet accepted as mainstream despite the volume of research (still lots more to be done). So we mostly only get to have good heart to hearts with our cohort and maybe every once in a while we will convert someone. Like our own journeys - Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Ultimately the proof will be in maintenance of weight loss and health gains. Then we get to annoint ourselves Bishop of the Church of Ketonists.

This! As I was sitting having coffee with a friend who is overweight but worse has joint and knee pain and is considering knee replacement, trying to convince her to try keto. When I suggested that she might want to take krill oil she looked at me like I had two heads! When I pointed out that the Vitamin Shoppe was across the street and she could pick some up she commented on how insane it was to have a large store that only sold vitamins. There is an element of that you want to help people and make a difference but there is also simply that people have been lied to for so long.

I made H join me in July mostly because I was feeling so good and he was gaining weight and I felt guilty feeling good while he was declining and I felt I was leaving him behind by not sharing keto with him!

Oh no! I’m so sorry about your brother…
