I’ve eaten low carb for a couple of years, but only got serious about being in ketosis a couple of weeks ago when my Dr. started me on metformin for pre-type 2 diabetes. I’ve been checking my am blood sugars and blood ketones the last week. This am my ketones went up from 0.5 to 1.2, but my blood glucose went from 88 to 181 mg/dL! Has anyone seen something like that? I’ve been eating the same meals all week.
HELP! Morning blood glucose measurement high
What time did you test?
How soon after waking?
Could it be related to the dawn phenomenon?
Wet your fingers clean?
Test a few more mornings at a similar time, to see if it’s repeatable or just a fluke.
I tested at 0630, 15 minutes after waking. I will definitely test again in the am. And I will read up on dawn phenomenon!
If you have the strips to spare, test at 0630, and then 30 and 60 minutes later, to see if it tends down.
There is a scientific term that I am forgetting, but your blood glucose is usually higher right when you wake up. I would wait a bit before testing in the morning.
With a reading that unexpected it always pays to wash your hands & test again It could easily have been a rogue strip too.
I was testing fasting am glucose immediately upon waking for a week in the beginning of keto. They were higher than I wanted but I would test numerous strips on the same drop of blood and get three wildly different results. That’s when I stopped making myself crazy with it all and planned on just trusting the process and waiting for my next A1c test.
Let us know if the tips you are receiving help. I’m very curious!
Good news! Blood glucose was 77 this am. I’m assuming yesterday was a fluke. Sorry for the false alarm. I should’ve taken another measurement before posting.
I know it sounds crazy but your blood glucose and raise AFTER exercise. Take it before. https://www.joslin.org/info/why_do_blood_glucose_levels_sometimes_go_up_after_physical_activity.html
