I’m trying to help my SIL get started figuring out macros. We’ve used several calculators, but they say she is 29% body fat which we know is wrong. Can anyone help us find a calculator that is accurate to figure out body fat?
She is 57. Weighs 300#, wrist 6.75”, waist 61”, hips 60.5”, forearm 11.25”.
Help for figuring body fat percentage
How tall is she?
Did you try this one?
http://www.calculator.net/body-fat-calculator.html?ctype=standard&csex=f&cage=57&cweightlbs=300&cheightfeet=5&cheightinch=10.5&cneckfeet=1&cneckinch=7.5&cwaistfeet=5&cwaistinch=1&chipfeet=5&chipinch=.5&cweightkgs=70&cheightmeter=178&cneckmeter=50&cwaistmeter=96&chipmeter=92&x=75&y=18
And remember that these are generalized.
No calculator will be accurate to figure out body fat unfortunately. They will all range around 30%. A better way to guesstimate would be to find out what her preferred weight is that she feels comfortable at and that is achievable (probably a weight she’s been at before). Subtract that from 300, and figure out what percentage the new number is of 300. I’ll use my information as an example. My weight is 365, my lean body mass is about 160. 365-160=205. Which puts me at 56% BF roughly. Which, as a 5’ 11" woman that size, sounds about right.
She’s probably above 50. I was near 50 when I was near 300, but I’m a pear, not an apple.
Forget about macros right now. Just stay below 20g carbs, moderate protein at 3 meals (she doesn’t need to be skipping unless she’s really not hungry), fat to satiety (add fat to everything). NO CALORIE COUNTING. She’s very IR & hormone-deranged, and not eating enough will make it worse. Teach her about bullet-proof coffee. Keep it really simple for her.
Oh, and tell her she is cordially invited to the Vintage Ladies Keyo Klub here on the forums!
According to the calculator I posted above it suggests a Body Mass Index of 58.6 %
|—|–
|Body Fat Mass|215.0 lbs|
|Lean Body Mass|85.0 lbs|
|Body Fat (BMI method)|58.6%|
Remember this is just a generalization and everyone is different.
Do some research online and find out if you have an inexpensive DEXA scanning facility near you. You might be able to get your exact answers pretty inexpensively–these things are popping up all over! It’s also great for tracking your progress. I was STUNNED recently to learn that my measly 9 lb weight loss (in 2 months) was actually a 12 lb fat loss and 3 lb learn muscle mass gain. I don’t lift weights, so this is absolutely due to keto and IF.
BF% is just a number when that overweight. Just know that there is plenty surplus fat and KCKO. BF% will not give you any edge at this time
Thanks everyone. It makes sense that it doesn’t matter that much now what the percentage is. I was just trying to get her a ballpark number for calories.
The idea of just staying under 20 carbs at this point and not worrying about calories will probably make it easier for her.
Love this WOE, my daughter, son in law, sister in law, and brother in law are all starting it
Screw calories. Tell her to eat til she’s full. If she’s eating 70% of calories from fat, everything else will work out.
