Hello to All

Hi everyone, I’ve been lurking for about 5 weeks now, which is roughly when I started my Keto journey. I’m female, 5’4", 55 years old living in the UK and am doing this primarily to lose weight.

I have lost some weight so far. I haven’t weighed myself at all (conveniently, my scales are broken), so am going by clothes size regarding my progress. My clothes are definitely looser and I can feel ribs, and my sides are now more concave - a waist is emerging! I’m also less tired during the day have no more heartburn.

Like many of us, I have yo-yo dieted since I was a teenager, following all kinds of regimes. I did do one of the well-known VLCD shakes and replacement bars diets about 7 years ago and lost about 50 pounds, but have piled most of it all back on these past 3 years. I knew a bit about ketosis from doing that diet, but couldn’t face eating so little again. I am so thankful to have discovered this WOE, and so far, I have found it relatively straightforward and feel positive again.

Unfortunately, over the past couple of years, I have developed a dairy intolerance for some bizarre reason. Therefore, I have been trying lacto-free substitutes only to notice the ‘butter’ is made from rapeseed oil… and too much avocado has an emetic effect on me. I am still finding it a challenge to eat more fat, however, and have panicky moments when reading conflicting information about dietary fat vs body fat. I seem to be able to keep carbs around 20g, though.

I am excited about doing keto and love this forum and reading everyone’s contributions.

Here’s the easy part. Eat fewer than 20 carbs. Then comes the tricky part , and totally n=1. Protein vs fat. High fat, but not over the top so you burn your own. Protein, but not so much that you don’t get enough fat. Fast?, Don’t fast? experiment. You’re female. Keep your expectations reasonable.

As for dairy free. . . Your lactose intolerance might be a boon. Many slow their loss by relying too heavily on dairy. Eat lots of evoo. And cook with lard. Fatty meats for sure. Good luck.

Ghee might be an option if you are limiting dairy.

Or coconut fats and oils.

Hi, thanks for replying.

Yes, I use olive oil, and coconut oil occasionally.

I went and bought some ghee just now as it was on offer. I never thought of using it before. I just assumed it was for Indian recipes. I got some odd looks - basket full of bottles of water and a tub of ghee!
