Just joined the forum and want to say hello. I gave up sugar a couple of months ago, and almost without planning it have gone completely LCHF.
I started this way of eating for two reasons: first, metabolic disease runs in the family, and second, I finally admitted that I was addicted to sugar. Giving up sugar is like early sobriety all over again: cravings, irrational thoughts, the whole megillah. Fortunately, I feel so much better, especially now that I’ve basically eliminated all carbs from my diet, that postponing that next mouthful of table sugar or that next spoonful of jam is proving easier than I feared.
The weight loss is a very pleasant side effect of this way of eating, even if it’s not my primary goal. I was closing in on 250 pounds, and am now down to 233. I really would be happy to lose a total of 90 if possible. We’ll just have to see.
I may be one of those people who need to eliminate carbs almost completely. I thought I’d try to make cauliflower rice the other day and ending up bingeing on it and finishing up with a great bowl of popcorn. What a difference! I hadn’t realized how much energy I’ve had lately, until I had to spend the following day sleeping off the carbs.
Anyway, it’s going to be interesting. My sister and I have just bought a house together, and we have moved Dad in, so we can keep an eye on him. (Mom died in early April, so we want to enjoy what time we have left with Dad.) My sister is supportive of my new food priorities, but I’m not sure how Dad’s going to feel. And my niece and nephew are typical teenagers–as far as I can see, their diet involves lots of high fat but not much low carb, lol!
Anyway, I am enjoying ketosis, and it seems a lot easier to achieve than it did at first glance. I bought The New Atkins for the New You and a couple of keto cookbooks for ideas, so it shouldn’t get boring, whatever else happens! I’ll keep you posted.
