Hello from Savannah, GA

Hello, everyone!

I’m 34yrs old and live in Savannah, GA. I have 5 kids, ages 1, 2, 8, 12, and 14. I’m getting married to my fiance in December this year! I mostly lurk on forums, but I thought an intro would be wanted anyway. I’ve never met a carb I didn’t like. There have been days where the only thing I’ve eaten is carbs. They’ve always been my comfort food and I’ve always said I’d rather be fat than give them up.
While I didn’t gain much weight during my pregnancies, after the last two I suffered from moderate post-partum depression. I basically ate my feelings for the last 2.5yrs. I started reading about ketogenics in January of this year. In February, I gave up all sugary and caffeinated sodas. By the end of March, I’d replaced all of my pasta with spiralized veggies and ditched most other sugars and breads. Made it under 50g of carbs per day.
I’ve spent most of April planning and plotting what numbers I’d like to start with. Since I have a pretty non-active lifestyle at moment (30 min daily walk) I’m easing in to both this diet and upping my exercise.
I started toward keto eating this past Monday. I used several calculators, averaged them, and found that right now Carbs- 30g/7% Protein- 107g/24% Fat- 136g/69% and a 20% deficit in overall calories is a great starting point for me. I plan to be under 25g of carbs by the end of June, then I will set a new goal. I have no interest in dropping my carbs any more quickly. So far, so good. I haven’t even been hungry this week.

Welcome @GhostlySmile and congrats on the start of your keto journey. Opinions may vary here, but personally I think easing into it like you describe should be just fine — especially if that is what feels comfortable to you and helps move you towards your goals. It sounds like you are off to a fantastic start since you have given up the sugar and soft drinks. That alone is a huge benefit.

Good luck to you! I hope you’ll report here on your progress.

Welcome to the forum! I’m no expert, but I have been eating this way for 2.5 years with great success. First of all, be carefull with a deficit, the last thing you want is to lower your metabolism. I wouldn’t worry with it myself. Second, the protein my be a little high for your activity level. Have you calculated your lean body mass? There are calculators online for that also a lot of people here can explain more. Just don’t fear the fat! Remember it is your energy source, if you don’t eat it, you will be hungry.

I have looked at several lean body mass calculators over the last few weeks. Per the different results, my protein lands anywhere between 81g and 120g. I picked 107g as my “don’t go over” number, but I’m fine with anything between 81g and 107g. For instance, today I will only hit 89.7g unless I go off my planned meals, but my fats and carbs are still on point. I’m also working on steeply upping my activity level by the end of June. I plan to adjust monthly, so I’m sure it will change.
