Hi everyone my name is John and I’m 58 and I’ve been doing keto for 1 week and have lost 12 pounds. After a lot of research I know this is the right way of eating for me. A little history on me, I was at 225 lbs in 2000 then I got a job in management where I was sitting more and not moving around like with my job. My weight shot up to 290lbs then I started having serious knee pain and ended up having both knees replaced. But while off for surgery and not moving around my weight went up again to 330lbs. I’m back to a job being on my feet all day and the pain is so bad I was thinking about applying for social security disability. This is my last ditch effort to lose the weight and hopefully start feeling better and be able to continue working. Thank you for being there for support.
Hello from Michigan
Welcome, John. I’m 59, was 58 when I started too. Thank goodness I did. The joint thing, getting older, being heavy - oh yeah…
Welcome John, I’m 55, a spring chicken compared to you and Doug. : - |
Keto is truly great, I only had about 10kg to lose (20 odd lbs) but my joints are seriously thanking me for it. It made a massive difference.
There are people who’ve lost a heap of weight so it is all definitely possible.
Cheers.
Hi John- I am almost 58 and also in MI. I have had chronic back and knee pain for years. No knee replacements, but surgery x2. I cannot make any medical claims, but from my personal experience, my pain diminished significantly. I went from thinking that a walk was “a bad idea,” to being able to easily walk 20 miles without effort. I still don’t like to stand and type, which I have to do often during the day as a physical therapist, because it quickly irritates my left knee, so I just try to minimize it during the day by keeping moving. Even that has changed though. The way I see it there are multiple benefits to being successful on this way of eating. The first is simple and it is that weight loss reduces lower extremity joint loading. Less loading= less opportunity for energy loss in tissues (hysteresis) and less inflammation produced locally. Which brings me to the next benefit- decrease in inflammation. I hurt less and appear to heal faster. There is a lot you can read on this subject from many resources. I hope you read “The Obesity Code” and tap into the “2 Keto Dudes” podcasts from episode 1. They were helpful for me. When I started this 2 years ago, it was a day to day adventure, and I was nervous because I really did not know what to expect. The non-scale changes convinced me that I was on the right track for me and I am the better for it. I hope you are too. LMK if I can help-
Hello and welcome John.
I’m 49 and before keto, I wasn’t quite obese but I dreaded every day because of chronic inflammation in my back, knees and feet. I just couldn’t imagine working another 5 or 10 years but Keto rescued me and I truly feel 25 years younger now. No more nagging aches and pains I thought were just a part of getting old and this was before I even started losing a lot of weight. I’m used to outworking people half my age but now I do it without being grumpy.
I 100% know you can improve your quality of life. Please stick with this. It might take you some time to heal your body and get your hormones behaving properly, but it is well worth the effort.
Welcome! I’m 43 and I received a nasty case of peripheral neuropathy in my feet thanks to a year on chemo and I would cry getting out of bed, cry after work when I had to get out of my car and come into the house. I stiff walked and hobbled everywhere. It was tough stuff.
I am amazed at how decreasing inflammation by eating keto has almost eliminated my foot pain. I still feel it after a long day standing in one place or if I wear crap shoes but overall my quality of life is much better. I hope the same for you!
Hi Alex thanks for the reply, I plan to stick with keto and I can’t waite to get my life back thanks for the encouragement.
Thanks Bob I plan to read the obesity code I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. Thanks for replying and the words of encouragement.
Hi Petamarie thanks for replying and it’s encouraging that your inflammation has been reduced that’s what I’m hoping for more then anything else.
Hi Carl thanks for replying and for encouraging me, Im 58 but feel like 68 so I can’t waite to start feeling my age lol.
Thanks Doug, I sure wish I would have started keto long ago but I’m just glad I found out anout it now better late then never lol.
Yeah, John, I hear that. I’ve thought about that too - but in truth I was in denial for a long time, thinking all was well because I was only “glucose impaired” rather than really “diabetic.” 3 decades of that and finally my poor old pancreas couldn’t keep up…
Hindsight being 20/20, I wonder what else I should be improving…
I was also in Michigan for most of last month - Ann Arbor, and dang there were some cold days…
I’m starting to think the anti inflammatory nature of this diet is the best part. I’ve only done this for a little under 3 weeks but I have a bad knee from an accident last year and favoring that knee made my OTHER knee hurt all the time but I noticed this week that I didn’t have as much pain. It was a pleasant surprise! I have lost some weight but I assume it’s water although my scrub tops are a little roomier this week so that could be what’s helping too. I can’t wait to see what else improves!
I’m sober so I move through life wondering what major pain is going to look like in my future. Living life knowing I’m reducing the fallout from an injury or illness gives me piece of mind. Glad you’re feeling better.
I’m glad this is helping you too! Your body had been through a lot and I hope that this helps you feel better and better
This is HUGE. When we’re not hurting, it’s easy to take it for granted, but when one has recently gotten reaquainted with how much stuff can hurt, the absence of pain can be the greatest thing.
Well, John, I am 68 but now I feel 58 or better.
When I was 58 I was experiencing horrid knee pain from having no ACL for decades and weighing about 240 most days. I was addicted to (not abusing) opioid painkillers for kidney stones and my bad knee. Just 3 years later and at 250 I had successful knee replacement but my weight made recovery longer and more painful — more pain meds.
On and off I went on Atkins and dropped good weight but it didn’t do much for inflammation, etc. then at age 64 I ditched all the pain meds, Xanax, tramadol, etc just about cold turkey and wound up in a hospital thinking I was having a second heart attack (first one age 53). Heart was just fine, I had just detoxed wrong.
Four years later I was still “clean” but had regained all lost weight. Last April I hit 255 and it was time … time to regain some of my old Marine strength and resolve to tackle my weight like I had my meds.
I lost 20-25 pounds in 4 months, then in August found Keto and Extended Fasting. This regimen has helped me lose yet another 45 pounds and regain much of my youth. Weighed in at 186 this week and feel better than I did at age 58.
Glad you found this WOE at such a young age.
