Healthy Carbs?

(Jimmy Lock) #1

By late July I got down to 275… since then, no more weight loss and I’ve even started walking about a mile a day. I may need to look at some other diets

I was just reading an article that claims we should be eating approximately 250 grams a day, to support metabolic functions, so maybe I need to start eating some of the healthy carbs mentioned in this article:

So maybe this magazine should be called Health Prevention?

Dozens of dieticians couldn’t give poor advice, could they possibly? Not given the gold standard guidelines they follow from their professional organizations, right? :grimacing:

Oh, Good one!!

I thought leptin (for satiety) was triggered by protein and fat … carbs make you hungry and hungry for more carbs.

There are alternatives to standard keto, I do a hybrid of targeted and cyclical keto. I did standard keto for 4yrs, great for the fat loss, reversal of insulin resistance etc, but hurt me in the performance and ability to hold onto muscle. There’s also a lot leaning to prolonged super low carb hiring thyroid function, which was absolutely the case with me. Learned that after the fact and went back in labs and it was getting worse slowly the whole time.

I’d disagree with a minimum of 250g a day though, that’s not a lot by normal standards, but once you liver is full of glycogen, and your muscles get the rest, anything beyond that can start working against you.

That’s said, healthy carbs aren’t going to hurt you, but make sure you have a real idea of your metabolism as well. If you’re not tracking and just eating ro satiety, that’s be my first fix. Absolutely no shortage of us can’t do that, keto or not. If I ate to satiety I’d be 300lbs again, zero question about it That’s on top of me using Semaglutide to beat the appetite down.

Macro trackers like MacroFactor figure out your actual metabolic rate, no shortage of people are ahotting themselves in the foot without realizing it, I know I was. Which prior to having my RMR actually tested, just ended with me getting more and more drastic, fasting, allowing my metabolic rate ever more, I started on a home, and then dug it into a crater. Took over a year of reverse dieting to fix it, not fun!

Depends on the person… I deleted my longer post but main thing satiation is extremely individual and carby food easily satiates the right person for such a long time that is totally impossible for me on any diet unless I do OMAD but that has a lot of conditions.
It matters what we eat with the carbs, the order of the different items and who knows what. But mostly the person in question.
Carbs are typically more hunger inducing and protein is usually the best for satiation but looking at some people, at least under certain circumstances we can find something totally different.
Deleted another bunch of text, it’s an exciting topic  Even when we find rules, N=1 ones, for the present us, we may find exceptions when we eat in unusual ways (see me on fat fast days).

I haven’t been consistent enough to have established actual levels of carb consumption over more than a day, maybe two.

What I have noticed is that I feel my absolute best on either zero carbs or very close to it.

I play keyboard in a band. We had a “Thanksgiving potluck” to play for at a local church, basically a 3 hour gig. There was a LOT of food there and I knew there would be. About a half hour before leaving for the gig, I ate two 1/2 pound hamburgers and had 3 sunny-side-up eggs to go with. I had water to drink. It was about noon. (I did have some bulletproof coffee around 8:00am, a normal routine for me.) I ate nothing the rest of the day, only sipped on water. I was full of energy, was very mentally alert, played well, and noted the next morning that I’d like to feel like that more.

Since then, I’ve had more carbs but haven’t been performing, either. So I don’t know how it feels to continue on like that. One day, I will try it cause I wanna know.

Yes. I wanted to remain Keto but must admit I feel way better as a Carnivore. Or very close to it. coffee is my vice.
Since going Carnivore it’s easy to work out what has an adverse effect. You could go zero carb for a while then reintroduce a single non carnivore food and see what happens.

What has your calorie intake been while keto? If it’s been low enough, your metabolism adapted and slowed down to compensate for the lower amount of energy intake. You may actually need to reverse diet.

Do you do any strength training? Building muscle is a great way to increase one’s metabolism,

Eating 250 grams of carbs daily is not a ketogenic diet. I’ve seen suggestions of 10-20-50 g per day. 250g can be a diet, but not a Keto diet.

One thing I’ve seen that seems to defeat Keto is drinking alcohol. Many forms of alcohol contain high carbs. There’s a whole universe of discussion of whether and how to drink alcohol on a Keto diet.

I had the opposite- my thyroid function improved. I had to drop my dose. I’ve been carnivore for about 18 months.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

Ditto

I’m not sure about healthy carbs. Foods with carbs that are keto healthy: Habanero. Doesn’t seem like carbs in habanero ever effect ketosis. My N1 but I’m sure I’m not alone. Go hog wild I say.

Edit: Cayenne seems pretty safe too.

I haven’t seen mention of what I consider the most important point. Do you have type II diabetes? If so, carbs are poison. If you don’t have diabetes, then you can play with a small amount of healthy carbs. As mentioned, 250 g of carbs may be a diet, but it’s not a ketogenic diet. Congrats to getting down to 275, but the longer the fat’s been on, the harder it is to get it off. My recommendation is if you do have diabetes, double down on the very low carb, moderate protein, fat to satiety diet. Consider really low carb with the carnivore diet. I’m having trouble with stubborn, long held fat, but I’m off my diabetes meds and my A1c is normal!!! That’s my win and I’m KCKO. (Keeping calm and ketoing on.)
