Headaches after 2 weeks

(Wade) #1

Hi all
Ive seen that headaches are normal for the first week or two. I have been eating keto for the last 2 and a half weeks and have been eating 20g net carbs a day maximum. I have all of a sudden in the last 3 days had a non stop headache that I cant get rid of. I have been staying very well hydrated since starting my keto journey drinking upward of 3 litres or more of water per day. Are these headaches late withdrawl to sugar and carbs or is there something im possibly missing out in my diet that might be the cause. I had no withdrawl feelings in the past 2 and a bit weeks besides slight blurry vision on a single day. Funilly enough I havent really had the urge for sugar either which is weird considering I ate a chocolate bar pretty much everyday before this.

Any information or experiences about these headaches would be much appreciated.

Are you taking in enough salt? Himalayan pink salt 1-2 tsp a day?

I second salt.

Drinking water leads to urination. Now that the kidneys no longer deal with insulin (not nearly as much anyway) they now allow sodium to pass rather freely.

Sodium, I believe, is the kingpin of electrolytes. While eating the Keto way, you need to increase your salt. Regardless of high blood pressure. How much? (That’s always my first question when I hear these thing) Good question! Try a pinch at a time on your tongue about every 10 minutes until it alleviates. After one hour of that, and it’s not any better, try about a quarter teaspoon in a small glass of water. If that doesn’t work, there is probably something else going on.

The pinch of salt trick is also good when fasting. You begin to feel strange feelings like you need to eat, not hunger pains, just an erge to eat something or snack. A pinch of salt has worked for me everytime.

What does your doctor say? If salt doesn’t work, get it checked out.

I’m 5+ months in and I still have to take electrolytes at least 1-2 times a week. There are recipes online for keto aid, and you can buy things that come in packets you mix in a bottle of water, or your local health food/vitamin store probably has something

I’m a few months in and take sports salts in the am and pm. If I miss a dose, I get a headache. Overall, I feel so much better. It is concerning that I have to supplement, though.

Are you using any artificial sweeteners? I only ask because one type did give me a continuous headache.

I swear I get headaches with too much salt, or likely not enough water. Woke up twice in the night with a headache. Drank. Woke up with a headache. Drinking caffeinated tea. Can’t take Tylenol or nsaids. Pushing water too. Two stripes of bacon, eggs and cheese for dinner. One strip is my limit for salt. Up in (water) weight this morning too.

Sodium, potassium and magnesium awareness has helped me tremendously. This sounds like magnesium to me? (Not a doctor)

“Lite” salt, usually has potassium as a replacement.
I rely on dark green leaves (spinach, Swiss chard etc) for magnesium.

Grease them up, fry them, eat it raw - whatever, just ingest. I prefer raw.

Edit: Hopefully this helps! Research is key

Thanks for the help everyone I drank some pink Himalayan salt and water after I exercised as my headache was quiet abit worse at that point I put quiet a bit in and within about 30-45 minutes my headache started to go away and im feeling much better. I will be keeping a closer eye on my sodium potassium and magnesium intake. The advice is much appreciated.
