Having opposite results as I should on Keto. Please help. 🙏🏼

This is long and I apologize for that. I wrote it as my biography and got the dreaded “too many characters” when I tried to submit it. So I’m putting it here because I don’t know what else to do. Also, I did find a topic in here about SIBO that I fit to a tee, and I’d never heard of before. So I will try to look into that, doctor willing.

I’m a 49 y/o woman who has been doing Keto woe since July 8, 2018. I’ve lost about 23# depending on the day. I have about 7 more pounds to go to get to my goal weight, give or take depending on muscle. But more than anything, I just want to get healthy and feel good again.

I have several health problems and I’m on disability and pretty inactive at the time. I’m trying to start exercising again very carefully but since I’ve been on Keto, I’m having the opposite effect everyone describes. At first I thought it was my electrolytes so I’ve been doing everything I can to get those up. It hasn’t worked. I’m completely exhausted and my muscles have atrophied, despite eating quite a bit every day and more than enough fat for satiate. I feel light headed, very weak, dizzy, heart palpations, exhaustion. I fall asleep almost every time I eat despite following my macros as close as possible. I try to keep under 20g carbs. Instead of my skin getting supple, it has totally dried out and gotten a weird texture and super wrinkly (I didn’t have much wrinkles before-lucky genes in my family for that). Although some of my old health problems have gotten better, now I’m having pains inside of me that are accentuated. My pancreas for sure. I’ve had acute pancreatitis in the past from a backed up gallstone so I plan to try to find a Keto friendly doctor to get into soon. I now have a constant ache/pain in my lower left abdomin that I didn’t have before. I drink usually well over 64 oz of water everyday according to my thirst but I’m always thirsty. Peeing all the time. I used to have low blood sugar attacks every day before Keto. That went away completely. But this now has me concerned about insulin resistance with my body’s reaction with no energy.

One thing I discovered on my own because of this diet is that my body wasn’t absorbing fat or fat soluable nutrients. I had my gallbladder removed 25 years ago and they told me I didn’t need it. That’s it. No, “you’ll need to take meds for the rest of your life” or anything. Since then I got IBS which has gotten debilitatingly worse and worse since then to the point that I was missing too much work at my last two jobs. I alternated between severe constipation for about a week to severe diarrhea (incontinence) for a few days and back and forth between the two. I went to a gastroenterologist in another town to try to figure out why I was still so sick and all they told me was that I have gastroenteritis but they don’t know why. That was like 20 years ago. None of my doctors would help me with it and blew it off when I would ask for help. One was obsessed with Me having a hysterectomy and said my uterus was causing it and that’s it (I didn’t do it).

Since Keto, my diarrhea is almost completely gone…I’ve cried in happiness over this, except for the other problems I’m having now. After reading up on Keto with no gallbladder, I started taking Ox Bile and enzymes for digestion. Over the last week my pancreas pains have decreased significantly and my constipation has improved. But I still don’t feel the energy I should from ketosis and burning fat. It takes a lot for me to get out of bed to let the dogs out. If I’m actually absorbing fat now, I know it will take at least a couple months to see it in my skin.

I’m obviously really worried there is more wrong with me and my body is not absorbing other nutrients since I now have bile and enzymes for the fat and fat soluable minerals. I’m at a loss what to do because my current doctor is old”er” and quite frankly only cares about his retirement at this point. And he constantly complains about everything being computerized now at the clinic and how much he hates it. He’s not at all interested in figuring out what’s wrong with me as was proven this summer when I was having bad chest pains and had to twist his arm to get several tests for me and he forgot to order several of them so I had to keep reminding him and call the labs. Then, he just sent me a letter instead of calling me with the results and to discuss what we would try next as I had told him I wanted to keep exploring this if those tests came back okay. They did. Pancreas is my next testing agenda since I had chest pains the last time I had pancreatitis. Also, when I had pancreatitis a few years ago, he said some enzyme or something on my liver was a little high but not to worry about it. :flushed: Seriously? Not worry? So now my mind is thinking the worst with my liver too, especially since I’ve had to add Ox Bile and enzymes.

I’m very scared and don’t know who to talk to about this here since the doctors aren’t receptive to new and non-traditional medicine or diet. I can’t just go to another city that has more to offer because I’m on Medicare and would need a referral.

I don’t know if I should turn this into a post or what. I tried bringing it up on a Keto group in Facebook and got kicked out for posting a link to a video about Keto with no gallbladder. I’m scared of getting kicked out of groups now for posting something wrong like that. Please help!:pray:t3::cry:

Also, I have bruises all over my body that have gotten way worse since starting Keto. I’ve always had problems with bruises but not this bad. I’m taking a ton of supplements everyday to try to help, including iron, and my recent hemoglobin test came back good so I’m stumped.

I researched Keto naturopath in the area I live and I found one. I was surprised because I don’t live in the most cutting edge area. Dr. Ken Barry sees patients remotely and I’m sure he is not the only one. There are a couple podcast I would like to point you to. One is Naturally Nourished with Ali Miller and the other is Keto Diet with Leanne Vogel. Look through these podcasts and see if any of the topics sound like they might be relatable; although you might be surprised at what you learn from any of them.

(Peggy ) #4

Thank you for your response and I will look into these. I watch Dr. Barry’s videos regularly. I didn’t know he took remote patients. I wonder if Medicare would cover that. :/:thinking:

I actually was watching Dr Barry’s videos on fatty liver and fatty pancreas last night and I’m really scaring myself before knowing what’s going on.

I think the keto diet is good for most people and it sounds like you are having more benefits than downsides. Your medical issues sound like you obviously need a new younger doctor and a referral to a specialist ASAP.

#7

When do you take the ox bile? I mean what time of day and with or without meals?

#8

You need a different doctor (I think I am stating the obvious) even if none are keto, at least find someone who will monitor your tests.

Have you tried giving up gluten? Completely, even trace amounts in foods? Have you been tested for Celiac? Initially it is a blood test. Note if you want to be tested you have to keep eating gluten until you have the test otherwise you will get a false negative.

I have a child with celiac who had no symptoms. However, for years if I had too much wheat in a day I would have diaharrea the next day. If I avoid wheat it usually goes away about 90%. Since keto is mostly gluten free I usually am much better on it. I was negative when I was tested about a dozen years ago. Even if you are negative and even if keto is not for you, try avoiding gluten for a couple of months (after testing) to see if you notice a change

I do think you should have whatever conventional testing you need done to rule out everything else, I did feel like my muscles were smaller initially but after more than a year do not feel that way. However I also felt more energetic on keto except it shifted my sleep patterns so I was more tired at night and woke earlier. It may not be for you. Although you could also try signing up with intensive Dietary Management for their remote program. It is not covered by medicate

Once all the conventional testing is done then go see a naturopath

Hi Virginia. I take Ox Bile with meals. I usually have two meals a day and IF 16:8. Today I’m doing a longer fast because I hurt my back last week and it’s healing very slowly. Plus I’m trying to heal some of my organs so I’m going to just see how long I can go. I’m at 20 hours right now and not hungry. I’m feeling pretty good right now since nothing is in my stomach but a little dizzy so going to drink water and take some electrolytes . lol Just did both ketone and glucose reading.

I don’t know if any of this makes a difference because I’m still trying to understand all of it. But just in case, here are those readings.

(Peggy ) #10

I don’t understand the glucose reading at all, by the way. First time I’ve done this in like 10 years.

Hi Saphire. Thanks for the input. I have not been tested for celiac although I have long suspected it. I at least have an intolerance if nothing else. I have completely eliminated all gluten from my diet because I get really sick from it. I immediately noticed a change for the better after giving it up. I also don’t eat soy, legumes, any other grains at all, no fluid milk but I can handle hard cheeses, no processed foods, MSG makes me sick, red dye makes me sick, Stevia seems to raise my insulin and lower ketones which really bums me out.

I’m learning about FODMAPS and been eliminating even more foods just to see if it helps :sob::sob::sob:. I feel like I’m so limited in what I can eat.

Thanks!

Peggy, taking the ox bile with meals is shutting your digestion down completely.

Let me explain. Your stomach is a very acidic environment. Your stomach pumps in hydrochloric acid to dissolve the food you’ve eaten. So it’s supposed to be acidic in there.

About 10 inches below your stomach (in your duodenum) is where your gallbladder (if you had one) would pump in a good amount of concentrated bile to mix with that acidy mix coming out of your stomach, which would then make it all “sizzle” (remember acids and bases back in h.s. science class? Bile is a base. Stomach acid is an acid) so your body can extract the nutrients from the food. This is how digestion works.

Did you ever make a volcano in science class? You poured vinegar (acid) over baking soda (base) and it made that sizzling sound and all foamed up. Same thing happens in your duodenum so all the nutrients in the food can be made available and absorbed by the body…

By taking ox bile WITH food, you are neutralizing that NECESSARY acidic environment in your stomach and stopping proper digestion. Shutting it down completely. In other words, it neutralizes your stomach acid, so the food doesn’t get properly acidified inside your stomach. Nutrients aren’t available to be absorbed later in your intestines

Take the ox bile if you believe it will benefit you, but take it about 1-2 hours before eating and at least 2 hours after a previous meal, so that it can clear out of your stomach before you eat and won’t interfere with what you’ve already eaten (remember, you want your stomach environment to be acidic!) If you eat beakfast, take it the night before, on an empty stomach.

There are most likely other things going on, but making this change could improve your digestion and ease that sleepiness a bit.

This is all a really simplified explanation. I can explain more if this doesn’t make sense. Just let me know. Hope this helps!

Have you checked your adrenals and hormones? Thyroid issue?

(Peggy ) #14

I will try your suggestion, but I’m confused. The Ox Bile bottle says to take it with food. I’m also taking Betaine HCL Pepsin and Gentian Bitters with the meals. That bottle also says to take it with food.

Thanks for your input!

(Peggy ) #15

I haven’t yet because I’m still paying off all my bills for my heart testing I had done this summer. I can’t even afford a copay right now to go to the doctor.

I do think I have issues with these though and do plan to eventually get them checked.

#16

I know it says that - it’s really criminal what these companies get away with.

With your hcl, take it around the middle of your meal. At the very latest, make sure you follow it with AT LEAST one bite of food. This makes sure that it gets all the way down into your stomach and doesn’t just stick in your esophagus.

The hcl and bitters DO take with food. They help acidify your stomach. You want that. So you’re doing great with those!

(Peggy ) #17

Thank you! Will do.

Okay, so I’ve been doing lots of research and testing and recording everything I have the means to right now going on with my body. I did a 26 1/2 hour fast starting after dinner last night. I felt pretty good today and both my ketones and glucose stayed consistent all day. I was doing the fast to try to help my body heal but I also read when you’re fasting to exercise to help your body get rid of the bad cells to replace with new good cells.

Since I felt better today, I went for a 3 1/2 mile walk which lasted 68 mins (short legs). About half way through my stomach started turning and I had to stop at a park to use the restroom. All my dinner from last night came out in diarrhea and the carrots and almonds weren’t digested. Sorry if TMI. I walked back home and measured my blood after exercise (still in fast). Both my ketones and glucose went up, which I thought was weird. I’ll add a screenshot.

Then I measured again about 1/2 hr after eating and my ketones went WAY up and glucose down. (Sorry, I took the bile with the meal. This was before I checked here). Anyway, I thought it had to be a mistake so I tried two more times. Then I washed my hands again and sanitized my monitor, lancet, containers, etc thinking I had to have gotten MCT oil on it or something. Washed hands again. Tested again. Still high. So I broke out a new box of ketone strips and still super high. Is this normal? I’ve NEVER tested this high before. TIA!

By the way, I want to tell all of you how much I appreciate you taking the time to read my posts and actually give me informative helpful information back. This is the first forum I’ve been on where people have been so nice and helpful with the issues I’ve been dealing with. It means so much to me!

#19

It’s our pleasure. Teaching teachable people IS a pleasure!

Now that you know how the ox bile works, you can understand why some of your food wasn’t digested.

My b.s. always goes up when I exercise. That’s normal. Let me take a min to look at your ketones and I’ll post again. BRB.

Ok, one quick thing. Dump the Walden Farms. It’s all fillers and no fat. There are wonderful vinaigrette recipes online that’ll be MUCH better for you! And tastier!

Yes ketones are high, but as long as they are under 10, I believe you’re ok. There’s a nutritional ketosis graph posted in several threads here. You’ll have to search for it. I don’t have it to upload. Someone else who comes along may be able to post it for you. Personally I don’t track ketones. I have no idea what mine are, but I started keto before there were such devices. That chart will give you a really good understanding. If you’re new (I can’t remember and can’t check while I’m typing) your body may not be using many ketones yet, so they are just sitting there. Others will come along with more info.

Hope all this helps!
