Have questions about starting extended fasting for those with experience in it

(Susan) #21

This is what I do as well, Bob. I do 20:4 IF and I eat lunch at 1pm (as my larger meal almost always) and then supper at 4:30 (smaller meal usually) and I don’t snack between the two meals. The exception to this is I might have a tea between that I add HWC to.

For Fasting -I did IF slowly time wise at first -started with 12:12 right after starting Keto from a video I watched that suggested this. After a week or so on Keto I got to 16:8 then a 18:6 for a while, then upped it to 20:4. After a few more weeks I started doing 24 hour fasts a couple of times a week, then tried some 48 hour ones, then 72 hour ones, and the longest one I have done so far has been 75 hours (which was just green tea, herbal tea, water and electrolytes).

Also blood pressure can go down when fasting so measure BP if you can. You might get light headed. People also get cold sometimes. I do so I go to bed with extra clothes and sometimes an extra blanket.

That said I love the feeling I have when fasted and sleeping. My dreams are in technicolor.

That’s my biggest concern. Mine is typically 110/70 but sometimes drops to 90/50. I plan to keep salt on hand in case I need to bring it back up. My magnesium and potassium supplements used to make me light headed and that’s how I cured it then.

Being cold would be a nice change. Hot flashes and night sweats are going to be the death of me. Yay for being a woman.

Lots of people enjoy working out while fasting. It really raises your ketone levels. Brenda Zorn has documented quite a bit of her info for heavy weight training while fasting, she even gained weight during EF doing this. Increases in muscle mass while reducing body fat. :cowboy_hat_face:

@scoakley13 and @Diygurl19, if you can do OMAD, I think it’s good. Many people report overall lower blood sugar using that. I just (1) eat too much and (2) get home too late. I’ll be getting home after 7, sometimes 8pm every night save Friday, and going to bed at like 9pm, maybe 10pm. This is to pick up my daughters from their commitments. It’s a lot to pack into one meal, then go to bed.

I also get cold and can get low blood pressure, but the latter only occurs sometimes, usually after a few days. Getting cold is strange too. I’m fasting today (36 hours, hopefully), and got cold for a bit, but now I’m fine. Going to bed, I usually am cold, though not always. I also can sleep great or sleep much less time than normal (but then not be tired – must be hormonal).

I think my biggest complaint eating OMAD is getting all the nutrition in one meal, which I don’t so I don’t worry because I only do it on Saturdays and so I make up for it the other days a week.

Mine too, and I remember them longer and more vividly. Last night’s involved being posted to a base in a tropical area, encountering a lion, and advising the group I was with to just move slowly to avoid triggering a chase response.

My BP is similar to yours…I’ve never tested when fasting though…I do keep a close eye on my glucose and ketones, however.

I’m afraid I would get obsessive about testing. I bought some of the urine strips a few days after I started keto. I peed on those strips every day hoping for pretty mauve. Then one day it was deep purple and it freaked me out. The next day was back to blush pink and I was mad. So I threw the rest away and that was the end of that. I now know that the strips are worthless but all of it stressed me out.
