Halo top ice cream keto?

(Kellie) #1

I’m wondering if halo top ice cream is keto friendly ? When I read the ingredients sugar cane is listed in there so I worry about that but anything I find online about halo top says it’s keto friendly but that’s from like posts over a year ago so idk if they changed the recipie or if it’s not enough to spike insulin levels or what . I’m trying really hard not to have any sugar that isn’t like stevia based or raises blood pressure because I want to see if sugars have a big impact on my keto weightloss journey . When I have had dextrose and sucralose in like my Starbucks I notice my glucose levels on my moniter are in the 90s

No halo top is not very keto friendly, just have to turn the tub around and look at the ingredients on the back.

6g net carbs for 1/2 cup. Its def low, but depends on if you want to use up 30% of your daily carb intake.

This is for Vanilla, others will be higher in carbs for addons like chocolate, nuts, fruit, and other flavors.

Breyers CarbSmart ice cream is 4 net carbs per 1/2 cup which I have mixed into almond milk for a creamy smoothie before.

I looked up that ice cream , it has sucralose so it can spike insulin levels :frowning:

I think Sucralose ranks at about a 30 on the glycemic index (sugar is 100) so its still fairly low but you are right, it will spike blood sugar a little bit.

But considering the amount of sugar in Halo Top, id wager your blood sugar would be higher with 1/2 cup of that than it would be with 1/2 cup of the carb smart.

I LOVE ice cream, so Ive decided to make my own. Been doing research into ice cream machines and got a Keto Ice cream cook book.

Sugar. Not really. Especially not if you eat the whole tub like I did… seriously, does anyone stop at two scoops? :joy:

What you chargin? I love ice cream but I know Ill never make it. :star_struck:

I hear that Halo top ice cream tastes terrible. Plus it’s like $5 for a tiny container of it. I’d rather just eat some whipped cream and strawberries on top of some lime sugar free jello.

It’s really crap I think. It’s whipped and if you don’t get it back into the freezer asap, it’s structure changes and it goes weird.

If you are looking for a healthier alternative, why not try this recipe?

With summertime real close and the weather getting hotter, I feel the desire to look more closely at making ice cream right here at home. It’s on my list of things to explore…

I think we’ve had some of that Halo Top ice cream in the fridge since sometime last year. We ate a little bit of it but never finished it. It tasted so-so, not great, not awful, but not good enough to be all that tempting. It was way too expensive. And I didn’t realize the carb count was as high as it was.

I’d rather just have some real ice cream and pay the consequences. :stuck_out_tongue:

Halo Top ice cream would probably taste better if they had less salt in it. Usually as a Keto person Id be thrilled that there is about twice as much salt in their ice cream, but it just tastes strange.

I made my own ice cream last night, super easy- 2 carbs per half cup! And none of the bad sugar or hidden sugars, I used swerve :stuck_out_tongue:

When I want ice cream I just blend heavy cream and frozen strawberries.
You can add a sweetener but I don’t think it’s necessary.
It’s perfect if you’re going to eat right away, but will become a brick if frozen.

I am going to throw in a dissenting opinion and say that I like Halo Top. It is one of the few “low carb” ice creams that tastes and feels like ice cream. When I do eat it I only eat a couple of spoonfuls, so the carb count is negligible.

Oh yeah thats totally fine! Some people complain about how stiff the ice cream is, but if you let it sit out for a bit, it turns creamy just fine!

I’m more partial to the So Delicious coconut milk ice cream, no sugar added.

Yeah, Halo Top isn’t really very Keto, though I have some on occasion. It’s too high in protein and too low in fat (along with a small amount of added sugar) to be truly Keto.

There are some better Keto options just coming onto the market. Killer Whey (in Boise, Idaho; I think). Their Keto products appear to only be available online (their Protein ice creams are available in a few cities in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming). It’s quite expensive ($9 a pint) and I think a minimum order is 4 pints. They are a very small operation, but with growth, their costs (and prices) should come down. Their product does have Keto macros and good ingredients.

There’s also Rebel Creamery (Heber Utah). They are brand new and should be able to start shipping sometime in June or so. They did a Kickstarter campaign that did exceptionally well. Check it out to see more about the owners and their products (they actually eat ketogenically themselves). See the “updates” section for information about actual dates when you might be able to order their product. I’m hopeful some local grocery stores (Salt Lake City) will carry it and save me the shipping!

I have no affiliation with either company, I’m just very excited to see some real Keto options becoming available. If anyone thinks this post is inappropriate, feel free to move it or remove it.

Actually, I did just that a month or so back. My step-son and his wife came to visit us and she is a HUGE fan of Turkey Hill Double Dunker ice cream. And to be sociable, I had one small scoop on two different occasions. I did find that on top of a keto friendly Chocolate Pecan Pie Muffin (Carolyn Ketchum’s recipe), it was delicious, and I enjoyed every bite of it. I’ve not done it since and have no plans to repeat it anytime soon. But ya know, there are times, like Dr. Fung mentions, that a little of the real thing need not be a crisis. Enjoy it to the fullest and then keto on.

P.S., I still would like to learn to make some really good keto friendly ice cream…
