Had the real Flu, recovered, and then got terrible Keto Flu?

Hi all,

Not sure where to start with this, but any help is appreciated.

To set the stage, I’m 4 weeks into Keto and going strong. No slip ups, eating around 1900 calories per day in the right ratios. Have been in ketosis consistently across the entire period (as per Keto pee strips).

I had the flu 9 days ago, it lasted around 4 days and I recovered with bone broth and eventually more solid keto foods. Definitely not a fun experience but this community and the 2Ketodudes podcasts got me through.

Days 4-7 were fine. I was still abit tired, had a cough, but just felt like lingering cold symptoms. The flu going around here has abit of a long tail.

Day 8 and 9 were hell. Day 8 I was travelling for work, had some regular keto food (but likely without enough fat, i’d estimate 4-500 calories) two alcoholic drinks (scotch on the rocks) and started to feel very very light headed. Tried to eat abit more fat, had some ketoaide, but got progressively worse (all the way to vomitting late in the evening). It felt like a 10x more intense version of Keto flu I had in week 1. I stopped drinking at 2 drinks so it wasn’t the booze  Actually at one point I considered whether I actually picked up food poisoning. This is still a possibility.

Day 9 continued poorly - light headed, generally ill feeling. Felt VERY dehydrated regardless of the amount of fluid I drank. Kept drinking Ketoaide, but at some point I just couldn’t stomach it. Had 0 appetite.

I hit today (day 10) and I just could not shake the feeling dehydrated, sick feeling. I broke down and consumed around 100-150g of carbs (for the first time in 4 weeks). Majority of my sick feeling went away within around an hour. I assume this is because, in part, that the glucose is driving more fluid retention and maybe I needed it?

So… I need help or suggestions on whats happening here and better ways to deal with it. Should I have consumed a bunch of salt to encourage water retention and more fat? I’m pretty sure I was generally too low on fat but I just couldn’t consume too much more. I just felt too ill. I got worried at one point that it was a major electrolyte imbalance or overall dehydration.

Any ideas on why the carb intake would have made me feel immediately better? This due to lack of adequate fat intake?

Sorry, likely much of this isn’t answerable without a doctor getting involved or a fully detailed food diary - but any candid suggestions from your experiences would help.

Thanks! Trying to keep calm and keto on…

-Adam

Most cold medicines are all sugar - there is the potential that the carb intake made things better because of carb withdrawals.

Rest, reset, keep moving forward.

I wonder if you are still having regular flu. I say this because this years flu season is really bad, and I’ve heard that sometimes it appears that you are getting better and then you get worse. My husband is moving into week 4 currently and he’s still coughing. He was diagnosed with Strain A and I’ve never seen him so ill. Maybe you need to see a doc. Hope you feel better soon!

Just closing out this thread. It was definitely the actual flu. I have friends and colleagues around me with similar symptoms - flu for 4 days, got abit better for 2-3, then sick again for a few more.

I balked and ate about 100g of carbs 2 days in a row after the second bout. It helped abit to speed recovery. I am back on keto now and going strong for the past few weeks.

KCKO!!
