Greetings all,
Sorry for the long first post but stay with me. I’ll start by saying that I did things backwards. My journey towards a Keto diet started with intermittent fasting in February 2018 and within 3 months doing a 20-4 fasting/eating window, I went from 240 pounds to 200. I was still eating whatever I wanted but found myself eating more and more whole foods and cutting out the more processed foods. Then, I stumbled across the dudes podcast in May and immediately converted to more fats and have since cut another 20pounds and feel great. No, I was not diabetic…I was a somewhat healthy otherwise 32 year old but over the last 8 years have increased about 3-4 pounds a year. I started this all as an experiment after my mother, who has been a “prediabetic” for years had her first open heart bypass surgery. She has had 3 strokes in the last 4-5 years with the last one being in early 2017. She had always been told that this is genetic. Being a veterinarian and a lover of science, I took it upon myself in December to begin researching because what was I left to do? I saw the effects in my mom and can see my older brother following the same trend and I was just suppose to accept that we are going to wait for it to happen again? That’s when I started fasting and came across Dr. Jason Fung’s book and ran the experiment on myself for a few months to see how I felt. My mom saw the effects that I have had and I started explaining what I was doing and her mind was blown. She has had reservations given what we have always been told about fats, cholesterol yada yada yada… My explanation to her was are we suppose to sit and wait for this to happen to her again again or try something to try and stop it from happening again. Are there any of you out there that have been in a similar situation that could offer advice or resources for me to present to her. I have not come across much on people with previous bypass surgery/stroke history and the effects of a Keto diet. I’ve done most of my research on understanding the basic principles of how the body actually works on a Keto diet and the benefits of it in diabetes given heart disease is a common in diabetics. She is also somewhat nervous as to bringing this info to her doctor but I told her that it is needed and thought it would help to at least make her more aware of similar cases or research showing the benefits. Any help or personal experience would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike
