Greetings and advice

Greetings all,
Sorry for the long first post but stay with me. I’ll start by saying that I did things backwards. My journey towards a Keto diet started with intermittent fasting in February 2018 and within 3 months doing a 20-4 fasting/eating window, I went from 240 pounds to 200. I was still eating whatever I wanted but found myself eating more and more whole foods and cutting out the more processed foods. Then, I stumbled across the dudes podcast in May and immediately converted to more fats and have since cut another 20pounds and feel great. No, I was not diabetic…I was a somewhat healthy otherwise 32 year old but over the last 8 years have increased about 3-4 pounds a year. I started this all as an experiment after my mother, who has been a “prediabetic” for years had her first open heart bypass surgery. She has had 3 strokes in the last 4-5 years with the last one being in early 2017. She had always been told that this is genetic. Being a veterinarian and a lover of science, I took it upon myself in December to begin researching because what was I left to do? I saw the effects in my mom and can see my older brother following the same trend and I was just suppose to accept that we are going to wait for it to happen again? That’s when I started fasting and came across Dr. Jason Fung’s book and ran the experiment on myself for a few months to see how I felt. My mom saw the effects that I have had and I started explaining what I was doing and her mind was blown. She has had reservations given what we have always been told about fats, cholesterol yada yada yada… My explanation to her was are we suppose to sit and wait for this to happen to her again again or try something to try and stop it from happening again. Are there any of you out there that have been in a similar situation that could offer advice or resources for me to present to her. I have not come across much on people with previous bypass surgery/stroke history and the effects of a Keto diet. I’ve done most of my research on understanding the basic principles of how the body actually works on a Keto diet and the benefits of it in diabetes given heart disease is a common in diabetics. She is also somewhat nervous as to bringing this info to her doctor but I told her that it is needed and thought it would help to at least make her more aware of similar cases or research showing the benefits. Any help or personal experience would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

I don’t have much to offer but support.

I had 4xbypass 17 years ago in September when I was 48. Was keto light <50g since June 2015 and now <20g since June 17, 2018. My PCP and Cardio support <50g per day. I have not discussed fat macro %. Recent nuclear stress test for blockage shows Zero 0% blockage. Does not mean no blockage. Just none shown. I was going to die early if I kept gaining weight each year and on <50g it was easy to slip. I am honest to myself with <20g / day. Just not going to do carbs.

I fell better. great NSV and lost 16 lbs on the scale. Also doing strength training and estimate I have gained at least 10lbs muscle. So gross loss ~26 lbs and net 16 lbs. Blood Pres still too high 140/88 and sometimes higher. I’m doing IF 18/6 3 to 5 times a week and love it. After I see PCP late sept I will start Extended Fasting. I worry about strokes with my BP.

Eating butter and bacon had me worried a lot. Old habits are hard. But the more I read the more I understood that fatty liver (duck liver) come from carb stuffing. And other readings and here has me confident at the 95% level that I am doing the right thing.

I felt like I was taking some chances with keto but in the last month after getting my appetite under control with IF I’m thinking I am going in the right direction. My wife has been 100% supportive. Bless her.

Goo luck. KCKO

Wow-we have very similar stories. I had been relatively low carb when I jumped into a 14 day fast. I know call me crazy. During my fast I ran across the 2 dudes podcast as well and began keto for earnest. Since then I have spent a lot of time learning as much as I can about different things such as adrenal, thyroid, autism, seizures, heart attacks, dementia and many other health related food issues. I have several favorite resources that I have found it. One is a podcast called The Low Carb Cardiologist. He has great info on Keto and heart related issues. I also really love Dr. Benjamin Bikman. He is a doctor of metabolic disorders and a researcher. He also teaches med students at a college. You can find him on YouTube and you can search in podcasts for his name and listen to him interviewed by lots of different podcast hosts. He is a doctor of metabolic disorders and a researcher. If you haven’t watched the movie The Magic Pill I highly recommend you watch that with your loved ones.

@Stabla Thanks for the podcasts and other references. The Magic Pill is great as is the Fasting Movie.

I’m still working on convincing my mother as well. She is open to at all for vanity purposes. But at this point in her life she has no interest in learning all of the science and mechanisms behind it all, which is oart of what makes me buy in. Anyway. Maybe the best approach especially for you is the “you’re already having issues/what you’re doing isn’t working try something else.” type of conversation. Or try to get her to agree to give it a dedicated trial run and don’t freak out about cholesterol until you have been eating this way for a while or your numbers settle…And don’t judge it based on a single test! there is always a risk involved in doing anything. The unknown is scary. but there is so much that is known about Keto, it helps quell those fears. there is so much information in the podcasts. hoping there are some oodcast guest or someone here woth sinilar enough experiences that correlate enough to get her attention.

Maybe watching some of the documentaries will help?

Good luck!!

Start with the Magic Pill. It is people oriented. The fasting movie gets into the weeds a little more.

Thanks for the info. I’ve been looking for a new podcast to start on since I’ve caught up on Keto dudes. I’ll also check out the movie as well.

You might want to have her read “The Big Fat Surprise” for her to see how we’ve been misled about fat all these years.

I gave this to my mom to help her feel more comfortable with her choices. Hope it helps!

Great article, Irene, thanks!
