I went to buy some Brazil Nuts at my local (Canadian) grocery store - $CAD75.99/kg (USD$59/kg)- I guess they’re going on the “once in a blue moon treat” shelf for now! I hear that price is because there’s a global shortage (or perceived shortage) at the moment.
Goodness! Brazil Nuts at $75.99/kg
That is terrible, and I’d just put them on the shopping list…
But I agree with Karen above, the reason I added them was because I read that one brazil nut contains the recommended amount of selenium…now that I’ve gone and looked it up again I’m seeing that eating much more than 2 will put you at greater risk of having too much selenium. So I would actually stick to buying smaller amounts so they don’t go bad before I get to them.
That’s nuts.
Sorry.
Thanks! Orders over USD$79 ship free to Canada. Less than that is $7.99 shipping. Definitely something to keep in mind for some bulk nut buys.
Brazil nuts are toxic at a pretty low amounts (more than 2-3 a day over time). I just gave them up as whats the point in having 2 nuts at day.
Typical day of Keto eating (meat/spinach/eggs) should provide more than adequate Selenium intake according to what I’ve read.
I was having them on the odd occasion as a high-fat low-carb snack…for when the munchies attack - even though that’s pretty rare these days.
I love Brazil nuts but I rarely have them because I basically have to trade a body part for a bag of them. Lol
Same as @dub local Trader Joe’s has them for about $10. I eat them for the selenium because I have Hashis and selenium supplements make me sick (anyone else? would love to find a supplement that does not). I limit it to 2 a day a few days a week
Keehan, that’s abysmally brutal - sheesh! I had not known of the shortage, but there were problems with drought last year, I now see - smaller yields, the nuts being smaller and dropping off the tree sooner, etc. Oddly, Brazil itself was a net importer of Brazil nuts for at least a while in 2017.
I get a Kroger supermarket 12 ounce/.34kg bag of mixed nuts for $7 or $8 U.S. - almonds, pecans, filberts (hazelnuts), cashews, and usually 7 or 8 Brazil nuts; guess I should be thankful.
Oy… You know, though I’m rather inconsistent, I still haven’t been baking nearly as much; hadn’t noticed.
