Good article, uses a lot of keto ‘science’ back-up to support it… and you know it has struck a chord when it incites a holy war in the comments!!
Good Article on a 90 day ZC/Carnivore n=1
Dr. Benjamin Bikman talked about how protein works on a person that is LCHF adapted verses someone that is not. I’m beginning to think that measuring and worrying about getting too much protein probably does not matter for me.
I agree, good article. I love the comparison charts with the different foods and their nutrient values and then the Herbivore vs Omnivore chart. I like charts. Especially charts with useful information. You could sell me almost anything if you have a good chart. Lol
Triggered vegans all over the comments, means I’m gonna like this article probably.
One thing he writes that does not jibe with the science as I understand it:
Carbs in and of themselves are not a bad thing, and fat does undoubtedly make you fat (it’s tough for your body to make fat from carbs btw).
I’m not sure where he got that, since we know that under the influence of insulin the liver manufactures fatty acids out of carbohydrate all the time. It’s called de novo lipogenesis. The author of the article ought to watch more of Dave Feldman’s videos.
He got picked up on that in the comments. He admits he’s no expert and that one definitely made it through when it shouldn’t.
It’s funny that the top line picture includes leafy greens and cherry tomatoes.
I suspect he was not getting adequate sat fat based on:
As expected from a high cholesterol diet my LDL was elevated, and my HDL was super low but my triglycerides were relatively low.
Triglycerides we know are about carb metabolism. Low HDL is insufficient sat fat. Pretty much no one who does LCHF of any sort sees HDL drop.
Most of the time I ate grass fed ground beef or bison as that was the most affordable along with some fish and some organ meat.
GF ground beef is likely the lean stuff, and the bison is as lean if not moreso. should have added some butter and his profile would have been better.
I’ve been reading everything I can get my hands on and apparently there are some concerns about excess protein if you have the disease of type 1 diabetes. Otherwise it’s not a problem.
I would add that people with compromised Kidney function and in some cases, people who have been very insulin resistant (T2D) for a long time should also approach high levels of protein a bit more cautiously, and monitor the situation.
My n=1 journey, over a several month long test, tells me that protein in excess of about 1g per pound (2.2g per kg) of LEAN body mass, causes a slight rise (5-10 mg/DL higher) in my blood sugars and A1C.
When I was keto, I wouldn’t even come close to this level of protein. On ZC, it is a risk if I don’t intentionally stick to fattier meats, since I try not to run too much of a calorie deficit relative to my BMR. I find that my metabolism is likely not yet healthy enough to tolerate the “all the meat you care to eat” approach to ZC.
To be clear, I did not gain weight and saw body composition improvements continue during this ZC experiment in spite of consistently consuming hundreds, if not a thousand calories in excess of my BMR each day.
