Going to the dr. For my yearly check-up & blood work

(Cheryl) #1

Thoughts on what else should I request or do these normally included in a basic blood panel?

Thanks!!

  1. A1C
  2. Vit. D Level
  3. Thyroid panel
  4. Chemical panel

Lipids panel? Liver enzymes maybe?

Lipids?

The only reason I will ever have a lipids panel again in my life is so that I can use the data in discussions when attempting to get other people to understand that eating fat is healthy. Yes … triglyceride/HDL is a good marker, but I am already doing all the right things, interventions, so knowing that number is no longer going to have any impact on my health. I do not see any medical reason to waste money on a Lipids panel.

I do, however, love data.

Fasting insulin

I only suggested lipids as personally I like to track that kind of data  especially when seeing the HDL increase and the doc was baffled how I managed to double it in a short space of time lol.

I’m one of those geeks that has an excel sheet to track my blood results over the last 5-6 years just for curiosity sake. But in saying that, it’s all bulk billed here so it doesn’t cost me anything.

There is certainly some entertainment value in watching the perplexed face on your average doctor when he looks at your lipid numbers and you tell him you get more then 70% of your energy from fat including lots of animal saturated fats.

I also love the data.

Have a great day Jenny!

If you’re going to be getting any cholesterol numbers done, you want an NMR LDL analysis, because you will need the LDL size numbers to counteract the doctor’s desire to put you on a statin. If most of your LDL is the large, fluffy type, you’re fine, and even your doctor will have to admit it. But most doctors aren’t accustomed to looking at the triglyceride/HDL level, which tells you the same thing, so a high LDL without the size profile will make them reach for their Rx pads.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!!

Or don’t bother with lipid testing til you are at your Keto goal.

Don’t tell us—tell our doctors!

Serum ferritin- because too much iron can really muck things up (skip if you’re a menstrating female)

HS CRP- a marker of systemic inflammation

(Damon Chance) #12

CAC scan. And the fasting insulin, NMR, and Lipid panel.

Hi Paul,

It is easy to counteract my doctor’s desires, I just tell him NO. He works for me. There is no reason for anyone to be intimidated by their doctors. Doctors need to remember who is in charge.

evil grin

Now … counteracting a ten week old puppies desires, that is a much more difficult and interesting problem to solve.
