So o have been doing keto for about three months now and have been regularly checking blood glucose and ketones. I do diet for energy and not for weight loss or any health implications. For the past two weeks I can rarely get above 0.2 or 0.3 ketones. My blood sugar is usually under 100 but in three separate instances it has been unusually high. This morning I had only black coffee, athletic greens with a tsp of glycine and a fat bomb with 25 grams fat and net 2.7 carbs 2 protein. About an hour or two after all that I tested glucose and it was 147! Ketones 0.3… Can anyone explain this or point me in a different direction? I feel like I’m doing something wrong. I’m ok (not thrilled) with the low ketones due to some theories that I may be utilizing them better now that I’m fat adapted but the high glucose really concerns me. Sorry for long first post, thanks for any help.
Glucose up ketones down month 3 of keto
Also I had a 1/4 teaspoon Redmond’s all natural salt just straight with some water. It’s part of my morning routine. I try to supplemt with around 5-8 grams of salt straight a day. Keeps my energy up and stops afternoon crash and headaches.
Did you test again? Any time you have a test out of range you should test again. Bad reads are very common.
What are “athletic greens”?
What are you doing during the 2 hours after you ate? Did you exercise?
Athletic greens is a typical greens drink powder that you mix with water and shake up. Drink it once or twice a day. It has a ton of vitamins and minerals for the day. No exercise this morning just mainly reading and researching stuff online.
Tested again after your suggestion and I’m at 98. It was 28 mins after last test
Best I can tell there are lots of natural fruit stuff in there…take your BG after you take some and see if this stuff is the issue.
I’ve repeatedly experienced a similar pattern this winter where my ketones drop and glucose rises for a week or two at a time. My athletic performance also drops off somewhat. I think it has mostly been due to catching colds despite never really getting sick. My wife is a school teacher and it was a rough winter for her students, lots of colds and at least one spell of flu. She picked up a few of these to some degree. Typically a couple days after she would start to cough or show other symptoms I’d see my blood glucose rise about 20 mg/dl and then see my ketones drop over about 24 hours. And then the next day I might get a hint of a scratchy throat or a bit of a sniffle. More frustrating for me I’d have measurable declines in physical performance across the board strength, speed and endurance. And sometimes a rapid weight change of a few pounds, usually up, but once down. Then typically after a few days to a week, though a couple times it was longer, everything reverses and goes back to normal. The longer ones involved additional factors of stress and disrupted sleep each of which are well known to raise glucose.
A few items come to mind. Glycine can do this in some cases. Also, what was in the fat bomb? Was there a sweetener in it?
No sweetener, just 1/2 cup PB, cup coconut oil, and 85% cocoa bar 8 squares with 1/2 tsp cocoa powder. Just under 3 carbs per serving
1/2 of PB is more than 3 carbs already. 8 squares of 85% cocoa is more than 3 carbs. Are you eating a only a small bit of that?
That makes more sense. I’d probably put it at about 4.5g per serving, but thats not significantly different. I would think about the glycine. What is in the athletic greens?
I posted a pic above of the label on the athletic greens. Richard had mentioned supplementing 5grams of glycine a day and seeing improvement in ketone numbers. That’s why I started it and also it saves me money on getting the bone broth and time also.
I make my own bone broth. I also take collagen peptides and glycine in my coffee. However, I have heard from others that glycine can have weird effects. This article indicates that it was fine with protein alone, but with glucose, it had a 50% grater effect on blood sugar:
I am having something similar happen at the 3 month mark.
My spike is less high, but I am also on metformin for PCOS and my fasting BG is low now.
I am starting to trying to disentangle if this is impacting my body feeling like it is in less deep keto than it was a month or so ago.
Do you feel anxious or jittery during the spikes? I noticed that I feel anxious if my BG goes above about 110.
I saw a nutritionist due to some different questions about potassium, but I mentioned this to her yesterday and she suggested using a control solution on the meter before jumping to the conclusion that something is different with me. Perhaps this will help?
All best,

So I went back to the basics for a week and cut out all artificial sweeteners and my zipfizz and just basically ate a ton of fat. My numbers came back up and I introduced my artificial sweeteners slowly and read the labels on everything that I added back in. The only thing I found that I was really missing the mark on was ready whip. I had been using it pretty liberally and when reading the label I saw that it not only has sugar but also corn syrup in it. I cut that out completly and have been right around 0.9 ketones consistently! Thanks for all the replies!
