Glad to be Here -- Loving the Forum - Have Some Questions

Hello Everyone!

I’ve been hanging around here for a bit since I learned about the forum by listening to the excellent podcasts!

A little about my journey with Tye 2 Diabetes:

I was diagnosed about 30 years ago at the age of 28. Up until that point I would pass out all the time but no one could figure out why. Finally a Doctor prescribed a diabetes test – back then the test lasted for hours. They would give you a Glucose solution to drink and take your blood. Wait and repeat.

Over the years I’ve tried so many diets to help with my diagnosis. I even went vegan for a year and drank a plethora of freshly made juices. At that time my A1C’s were over 12 and my triglyceride levels were 1200! I was able to significantly lower my numbers going vegan and got to about 7.8 and my triglycerides down to 200. In the end I started feeling terrible – I craved protein so much! I slowly started adding protein back into my diet. I lost quite bit of weight but by testing my sugars they were constantly up in the 200’s – I was on 2000 mg of Metformin and 20 mgs of Glyburide twice a day. I would have to take the meds to get them down and then they would be right back up again.

I tried Atkins years ago so I was not unfamiliar with Low Carb eating. Recently I started seeing Keto everywhere so I did some research and jumped in full force 6 weeks ago. I was already off sugar, white flour, and all processed foods so adapting to this way of eating was pretty easy.

Im learning more and more about myself every day with the awesome information this forum provides.

My question is are there any of you out there who have been diabetic so long your pancreas no longer secretes much Insulin? I am extremely sensitive to carbs – any carbs! When I started I had my blood work done and my A1C’s were at 7.0. My Doctor took me off Metformin and kept me on Glyburide but decreased my dose to 5mg two times a day. I was determined to get off meds completely so most days I didn’t take any meds at all. My Doctor, btw is totally against anything I try to explain to her. I keep a food journal from day 1 and never go over 20 grams of Carbs – keep my protein at about 40 grams and the rest good healthy fats!

My sugars, although much better, stayed in the 140-170mg range. I’ve tested and find that if I take 1/2 Glyburide 2.5 mg my sugars improve quickly – down to 100-120 mg. About 4 weeks in I did a 72 hour fast and my sugars got down to the 80’s. But as soon as I add any carbs back they shoot back up to the 120’s-130’s and are always higher in the mornings. Yesterday I had zero carbs and they were 127mg this morning. I asked my Doctor for a Insulin test and she said No! I now fired her and found another Primary who is also an Endrocinlogist - have an appt next week. I hate taking the Glyburide because it raises Insulin and we don’t want that! However, by observing myself I’m seeing my numbers improve drastically by just taking the smallest dose.

I hope this new Doc will test my Insulin and I can figure out what’s going on with me!

My Dad passed away due to complications of Diabetes and my Mom had a heart attack and Kidney Failure last Sep., she is now on Dialysis 3x a week.

Again great to be here! Sorry for the long post everyone!

Maybe you could discuss with your doctor if you can take Metformin instead of Glyburide. Metformin will decrease your BS but won’t affect insulin.
@richard seems to be just like you and he keeps metformin to get his sugar down.

Welcome  I’m not diabetic myself, so I have no answers or advice, but you surely came to the right place here. I know a whole lot more than I used to just reading the different threads, and there are so many knowledgeable and educated people on here to educate the rest of us. I’m sure you’ll get lots of helpful advice from this community

Hi @Anderson!

Nice to meet you! I asked my old Doctor to please keep me on the Metformin but she refused – hopefully the new Doc will be more open to this lifestyle.

I’m just concerned I’m no longer producing much Insulin or none at all anymore – I won’t really know until I can get myself tested.

I’m staying with the WOE no matter what and I’m happy to have found such a awesome group of people!

Welcome! Great story of your journey so far.

I agree the new doc and some insulin testing will go a long way to getting that glucose back under control and getting you on the right medication, if you need it.

It is definitely possible for someone in the late stages of T2D to lose the ability to produce sufficient insulin from beta cell burnout. My father is insulin-dependent. While I’m sure he could get by with less insulin if he reduced his carbs, he may never be able to quit medications completely. He’s in his 90’s now and prefers to eat whatever the heck he wants. He also rarely gets his glucose below 175.

Thanks for the welcome @carolT! Same with my Mother, who is now 80 and on Dialysis. I love her but I don’t want to be her.
