Fung fasting book

(Casey Crisler) #1

I just read the Obesity Code and it had a chapter about fasting. I’ve been IF 20/4 on and off for the last few months (however, I chew gum or use breath mints, which is a must in my job). Is his fasting book worth purchasing? Does it have any new topics or guidelines regarding IF and EF? I don’t really want to read a bunch of anecdotes or stories, if that’s what it is.

Casey, how about apple cider vinegar and H2O mouthwash? As Dr Fung
puts it, it is 12 hours after our last meal before we enter fat burning stage.
So if you fast after your last meal 18 hours you will have 6 good hours of
fat burning which lends toward weight loss. He also recommends coffee
or tea in the morning - saying it is good for you. How you want to fast is
up to you, but chewing gum or using breath mints could throw you out of
ketosis and entering the fat burning rather than sugar burning phase. Just
some things to think about. Maybe someone has some low to no carb
recommendations for you. Good luck hope that helps.

Right. Unfortunately I have to have some fasting breath masking because I’m up close and personal with people. Nothing worse than dealing with someone’s bad breath, uggh.
I do use ACV on occasion… Although I really need to drink it daily.
I was mainly wondering if the Dr. F’s fasting book says anything new about the subject. I don’t to plop down the $10 if it’s just a rewrite of what he said in the O Code or stories about patient A losing xx pounds by IF or EF.

I would say the Obesity Code is more of the science while the fasting guide does have a lot of anecdotes, but it also covers more of the “how to” of fasting. I bought both and didn’t regret it - YMMV but for me it was worth it.

Casey, you can go on “Diet Doctor. com” and they give you a free 30 day
free trial. Among the benies are various video, one being Dr Fung on
Obesity and Feasting. That would fill in the balnks for you. You can cancel
or go to a $9. or so/month plan. The info and videos are extensive. I
highly recommend it- did wonders for me and I am a health care
professional who is retired. It gave me the info I was wanting and needing.
Just a suggestion. Hope whatever avenue you take, it works out. I
know what “bad breath” communicates to the other person…I
sympathathize.

There is a lot of useful, practical information on the podcast Fasting Talk with Jimmy Moore and Friends, the friends being Dr. Fung and Megan Ramos. Jimmy Moore can become annoying after awhile, but the information was worth it. Also, the Obesity Code podcast with the 2 Keto Dudes, Dr.Fung and Megan Ramos. There is lots of practical information there as well. I really enjoy the podcast and hope they start adding more new episodes again soon.

You can also search YouTube for any talks with Dr. Fung and Megan. There is also a blog that has many applicable topics on the Intensive Dietary Management website.

All the content I’ve mentioned is free. I personally bought the Complete Guide to Fasting and found it well worth the money. I can’t recommend the Audible version read by Jimmy Moore, but I have read my Kindle version several times. Your mileage might vary!

I have found by experimenting that gum and mints have no effect on me. You might find that they don’t do anything negative to you.

I’m virtually a gum addict and have been forever, but a few months ago I went cold turkey on both gum and mints (I’m retired, so no customers to deal with). I could find no effect on ketosis, blood sugar, or rate of weight loss, which are the things I can measure. I have a thread around here somewhere on it, and a few people chimed in to say they’ve found the same thing.

FWIW, I use Orbit sugarless gum. I rarely use the mints anymore, though. The cold turkey withdrawal must have broken me of that habit.

If you don’t want to buy his book, go to the website and read the fasting blog posts, lots of them covering just about anything related to fasting. Here is the link to part 1 to get you started. Reading the blog posts is free BTW.

Only time I had issues with keto and bad breath was when I was eating WAY WAY too much protein, uped the fats instead and the problem went away.

If by “awhile” you mean “within zero point three seconds” and “can become annoying” you mean “I wish Australia had US-style no-gun-laws so I could shoot my phone repeatedly,” then yeah.

I’m trying to hang in there with the Obesity Code Fasting Talk podcast, but Jimmy just won’t STFU and let the talent talk.

I have both of Fung’s books and I find them highly informative.

(Diane) #11

Just a slight clarification, The Obesity Code podcast doesn’t have anything to do with Jimmy Moore and I really love the format. Fasting Talk is the one with Jimmy Moore.

:grinning:

(Running from stupidity) #12

You are, of course, perfectly correct.

Obesity Code is the one I quit after about one and a half episodes, Fasting Talk is the one I’m still trying to cope with.

I found it worthwhile to read The Complete Guide to Fasting. There are definitely topics covered in that book which are not covered either in The Obesity Code or The Diabetes Code.

(Hoby Bradfield) #14

I bought it, and found it helpful, but my wife calls me a book ho… because I love to read…

(Casey Crisler) #15

Thanks everyone for your input. I went ahead and bought it. $10 isn’t going to break me. Next will be the Diabetes Code.

#16

I learned a lot from The Diabetes Code. Jason Fung does the narration in the audio book version.

The worst part for me about the fasting book was Jimmy Moore. I wish he didn’t help with it.

On the other hand, I like the info being given in the Keto Hacking MD podcast, which has Jimmy in it. The info has been enlightening.

I’ve listened to Jimmy’s podcasts since the relatively early days of the Living La Vida Low Carb. (There’s hardly anything I find worth listening to in that one now). That probably puts me closer to a fan of Jimmy than many here. Even I had trouble with Jimmy on the fasting podcast when he had Dr. Fung and Megan on. For some reason, he just had a more annoying personality in that one. I often wondered if that was why Dr. Fung and Megan quit.

On the whole, I’ve learned tons from his podcasts over the years. The current Keto Talk and Keto Hacking MD are the ones I listen to most often. I think he’s just trying to be entertaining, or not boring, but it seems that it usually falls flat for most of us.
