Found out I ate something with sugar... Now what?

(Bill Pratt) #1

So I am 7 weeks in Keto lifestyle. Love it so much. My list is endless of all the positive changes. I have maintained 20 grams net carbs and intermittent fasting 3 days per week. Recently discovered matcha tea. We buy the pulverized powder at a health food store. I like it. The problem is my wife discovered Starbucks matcha tea for some reason has sugar in it? I have gone like 6 times in last week or so to order the matcha tea latte with heavy cream and no sugar. It’s good. But now it makes sense… Has sugar. So my question is, where am I at now? I have had sugar this last week. Am I out of ketosis? Do I start over? Do I “detox” or something? Kind of frustrating but I’m sure I’m not the first to have this happen. I’m good though. My Keto “spirits” are high.

Just stop drinking it and get back on the horse, stuff happens don’t stress

I know. I feel awful. I’ve been so diligent in every are for 7 weeks and then to get excited and order this latte thinking I’m good. (matcha, no sugar, heavy whipping cream).
But they have all the sugar in the “matcha powder”… Ugh!!!
That’s my question… So where am I at now?

stuff happens don’t stress
Thanks… That’s what I was hoping the response is. Feel like I’m supposed to “start from scratch” or “detox” now or something but was hoping to just brush off and keep going the way I have been.

Be a detective. Seek information about what you are eating and assume sugar in one form or another is in more food than you might have thought.

Get back to <20g / day and be calm. These things happen.

Keep Calm Keto On (KCKO).

I think it happens to everyone at least once. My husband drank an Izze soda the other day. I said - “Doesn’t that have sugar in it?” He was sure it was more seltzer-like. Nope. 31g.

From now on assume everything has sugar in it until it’s proven otherwise. I assume a hunk of meat I’m holding at the grocery store has sugar added until I can disprove it by reading the ingredients, because that ham I almost ate turned out to have a whole bunch of sugar used in curing/flavoring.

Like the others said, just move forward from here. And take note of how you felt, what it did to your progress, etc. Make it a learning experience.

That’s exactly how it was. I told my wife how good these Starbucks matcha lattes are and she said “is there sugar?” I was 100% sure there wasn’t. Well… She looked it up. (she is usually right I have learned after 25 years)

Thank you👍

Forget it and move on, but be more careful in future.

I suffered the same disappointment with Starbucks matcha. I live 200 feet from one and people get me gift cards all the time and that was my go-to drink. I had to learn how to order because they sneak sugar into everything there! The matcha is straight out-of-the-picture, though. The powder is mixed with sugar from the get-go and so is the chai latte. You can order black chai tea bags and add cream though, not an option for the matcha :frowning: We should start a letter writing campaign for sugar free matcha.
I’m drinking my homemade matcha “latte” now. A scoop of matcha, a splash of HWC, and a tiny scoop (maybe half a teaspoon) of coconut oil. I don’t do the oil for bullet proofing, I like how it tastes and almost sweetens it up.

My boyfriend and I started the same time and I’ve been shrinking while he’s been gaining and when I asked him to make a food log at work (cause I cook the home foods), we discovered the creamer he was using in his coffee all day had 2 grams of carbs a little plastic thing and he was using 15-20 as the day went on :hushed:. We look at it as a good thing to figure out and tweak instead of thinking this WOE Wasn’t working.

Hidden sugar is the worst

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #14

You’ve screwed up mightily, and it’s all over. No more keto for you!

There! Do you feel better now?

Seriously, this is just a blip on the radar. It’s heartwarming to see how enthusiastically you embrace this way of eating, but there is no need to beat yourself up over this. Take it as a lesson and be wary of hidden carbs from now on. Instead of feeling awful, try to focus on gratitude that you found out after a mere six days. It could have been a lot worse. :bacon:

Now there is the important lesson to have learned from this!

That’s the spirit!

(Chris) #15

It’s really simple. You learned it contains sugar, avoid it and move on.

Here’s your answer

No need to blame urself when u didnt know, mistakes are only good at the beginning, u learn and move on.

I remember when i started 2-3 years ago i was on my first week getting a bit better from ketoflu and i had bought loads of oranges (hello carbs). So on my way to sauna i decided to have one in the kitchen, first bite and i just stopped, i was like wtf what is this, literally tasted like chocolate cake after 10 years without eating. So obviously i had another one and another, till i had 4-5 oranges peels on the kitchen table and went to sauna all happy thinking damn im loving this shit best diet ever!! And when the morning came along, so did the insane headache (my headaches have been intense ever since i was a kid) and it really hit home its better b safe than sorry and do the research.

(Bill Pratt) #18

Thank you for all the replies on this. I feel much better this morning after starting this thread. (Iguess it’s therapeutic. LOL.) I get up at 5 a.m. and woke up feeling some remorse and frustration with all of this. I felt like I’d been deceived but in all honesty, looking at myself, I did not research it. Lesson learned. It tasted sweet, but my conniving, sugar addict brain thought that it was the "frothed, steamed, heavy whipping cream that tasted so sweet. Duh. Well, I am definitely back on the horse. I’ve decided not to change a single thing of what I’m doing. Everything I have been doing is great other than the matcha latte at Starbucks. Giddy up!

(Jay Patten) #19

You’ll be fine. Try switching to good ole fashioned black coffee or unsweetened tea. Remember, this is a forever lifestyle change, not a 6-month fad, so in the long run this won’t matter. Its a very valuable learning experience about sugar and how hard it is to purge from your diet.

@Bill_Pratt We ate poorly for most, if not all of our lives, so one week’s worth of liquid mistake is nothing in comparison. What’s most important is your awareness of sugar’s ubiquitous presence is greater and your determination is still intact.

This is great advice. If you don’t make something yourself or don’t have a nutrition label to read, you are playing roulette with your health.
