For those who own a Keto Blood meter - how often do you take a measurement?

(Bansaw) #1

I am thinking of getting Keto Mojo Blood Meter.
One thing that has put me off is the price of the test strips - ~$1 each.

For those who own a Keto meter, do you take a blood measurement once a day , or once a week, - what frequencey ?

I have the Keto Mojo. I am happy with it other than the cost of the strips. My husband and I use it about once a week. The am blood test results will be different than the PM or afternoon. We used up the strips that it came with. So ordered them from Amazon. For 50 it’s about $1 a strip.

I generally test right before my one meal for the day (or before each meal if eating 2).

If I’m fasting I’ll check every 4-6 hours as well as before sleeping and after waking.

Just try to be consistent with when you test :slightly_smiling_face:

I have had meals that when I tested at 2 hours my ketones were lower, and some meals when they were higher!

I’ve taken thousands of them (and blood sugar tests) over the last about 4 years. Now, I don’t take them. I found them disappointing. For instance, does higher protein reduce ketones? Sometimes it seemed like it did, other times, it seemed like it did not. Does eating later translate to higher blood glucose? Maybe, maybe not. Does eating higher fat translate to higher ketones? Maybe, maybe not.

They aren’t accurate enough. If you want a gross measure as to whether you’re in ketosis, they are good. For anything else, not so much.

I got one for curiosity and my once a week accountability post. I feel like Bob. Fact of the matter is I am in this for the long haul and those numbers don’t matter if my BG is better and I am not gaining weight… I guess I am more curious about fasting numbers and do plan on doing more EF so I might get more strips.

I measure 5 times

First thing in the morning, last thing at night and before+after meals or exercise.

So on a typical day, I may get:

  1. Waking up ~ 7am
  2. Pre-lifting ~ 4pm
  3. Post-lifting ~ 5:30pm
  4. Pre-dinner ~ 6:30pm
  5. Post-dinner ~ 9pm
  6. Before sleeping ~ 11pm

But I usually “merge” 3 and 4… so I end up with 5 data points.

So I could not do the fast I thought I would end up eating lunch around 2. After that I did not eat anything till now. So basically I did 45 hour fast. So my takeaway from this experience don’t start fast fast after carb binge rather eat keto food for at least 2-3 days. I was feeling cold all the time I had to wear socks and a sweater that I think is not good sign it means ur resting metabolism is going slow I might be wrong. It was brutal. Any input from anyone? On feeling cold?

Eat well for a few days before your fast (feast). Definitely don’t binge on carbs.
Was that your first fast? If so, I wouldn’t go longer until you are more used to it (unless it just naturally happens). Always break your fast if you start to feel ill or yucky, and make sure to keep up on electrolytes.

I check usually once a day. I am about 10 weeks in so it gives me a bit of reinforcement at the beginning. I’ve been weaning down lately as I have a handle on my eating.

Okay just got off a 20hr fast . Ate 1 drumstick, came to 1.1oz after bone deduction,1.5 oz avo,.08 oz mayo. Cup instant coffee .05oz butter. Mojo read Ketones 1.4🤨 what the heck!!! Oh yeah and 1.8 oz of sharp Tillamook cheese.

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #11

Was the 1.4 before or after eating?

(Wendy) #12

After

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #13

You should always test before eating.
After eating ketones usually go down
