Foods you overeat even though they are keto

(Bob M) #1

I have found certain foods I have put on my “do not eat” or “eat sparingly” list, because I can overeat them. By this, what I mean is that I can eat them without limit (no off switch), or can eat a full meal, and if I make these, I will STILL eat them, have to force myself to stop, and want more.

For me, these include the following:

  • Bacon
  • Nuts (all types, including macadamia)
  • These things: Porkitos
  • Bacon wrapped stuffed peppers, like this (though don’t need to get so fancy, can use chorizo or sausage): Stuffed peppers wrapped with bacon

With all of these, I find it very difficult to stop eating them. So, I either don’t eat them (nuts; haven’t had other than a mistake where I found some for years) or only rarely make them (bacon-wrapped stuffed peppers for the Super Bowl or maybe if others come over).

Do you have anything like this?

Peanut butter :expressionless:

Definitely Nuts.

Which makes sense because - in a way - nuts are processed foods.

I remember when I was younger, our grandad had a nut tree in the front garden. The flesh of the nut “fruit” itself was 99% fibre but sweet/sour enough to eat. By the time we chewed through the flesh, got to the core and use a large stone to crack the nut case to get ONE nut out - 15 minutes had already passed.

To get the equivalent of one bag of nuts, I’d have had to spend days at the nut tree.

Perhaps nature did not intend we extract nuts into 200g bags for consumption within minutes . Although, that said, some nuts like monkey nuts are quite easier to crack.

I have a lot of keto foods that I love, however, I am still able to restrain myself and only eat them in moderation - bacon, cheese, keto pizza in particular. There are some things, however, that I will not eat because I love them too much - nuts, cream cheese, peanut butter.

Cream cheese. The end.

When I first went keto, I’d eat a lot of almonds. But eventually, I slowed way down, and a bag that used to last minutes would start lasting days. Now, it’s been a few months since I’ve even had any. Pork rinds are the same, these days, something I used to overeat, but now I just don’t want that much at any given time. I also used to eat chocolate, starting with mixing it with artificial sweetener and cream, then just the unsweetened blocks, and now I’m no longer interested, it seems. Funny how that works.

Nuts, yes.

Cheese. Not ordinary cheap cheddar and so on. But tasty quality cheeses. I can inhale several ounces at a time.

Heavy cream. One liter (34 ounces) lasts me less than 2 days.

I’m wondering, looking at these responses, whether we aren’t all on the wrong track. These are all problems as snack foods, right? But do we really overeat them when they are part of a meal? Perhaps the problem is not so much the foods themselves, but that we aren’t getting enough to eat during our main meals?

(Laurie) #9

Perhaps for some. For me, I reach a point where I can’t eat one more mouthful of meat. But I seem to have no off switch for dairy. It takes will power to stop. And I can eat dairy when I’m not physically hungry – unlike, say, a meat-based snack like pork rinds or pepperoni.

Nah.

I could eat a handful of nuts with my satisfying OMAD meal. However I will find my way back for another handful of nuts later in the day & it’s not because I am hungry.

As I explained before, I think this is because a “bag of nuts” is essential a “processed food”. The further away a food item is from how it exists in nature (both in natural quantities found in nature & natural composition), the less likely that the correct sateity signals will be received by the body. Hence overconsumption.

If you put 10 nut fruits (as plucked from a tree) in front of me right now… from experience, I wouldn’t even be able to finish all 10. I’d be satisfied after eating & cracking a few. Perhaps it’s just the effort involved though.

Also, some people seem to be able to consume moderate amounts of nuts so maybe there is some personal aspect to it as well. People may find certain food items hyperpalatable.

Either way - I am not buying a bag of nuts that’s more that 50g any time soon.

Cheddar cheese, nuts, vegetables cooked in tallow with cheddar and Parmesan on the top. Any keto substitute for fake food.

I am changing so I have less and less such items… But the carby ones are worse regarding various things, overeating too.
I am a big overeater, I did that all my life, I still do. Well, it usually involves carbs. If not, added fats (low protein dairy countrs too) as they aren’t satiating for me but I like them.

I can eat certain processed meat items easily but overeating is plain impossible there, I can’t eat much of them, I need proper meat for a decent amount.

Nuts but mostly peanuts (I know it’s a legume. we always have a few pounds in the kitchen, basic food for my SO though he eats it rarely. but sometimes it’s his only food during his workday. I couldn’t eat it as a meal but he can. 120g nowadays, 250g in the past when he had 12 hour shifts, very rarely but it happened… I doubt I ever could eat that much, well surely I could but not happily and I would feel bad afterwards I think), that was in the past when I was able to eat 100g of it in minutes. Now I stop waaaaaaay earlier and usually before/at 10g. That’s plenty. I should eat zero, it’s not proper food to me and normally I do just that.

I could eat much cakes and chocolate on keto but I am not interested in them anymore and only the latter caused overeating (due to added fat) and even that very rarely. Cakes are pretty normal, satiating, nutritious items so they acted like the others - I just could eat them when I was bored of the others. Well, I am always bored of them now but I can’t stop eating pork roast until I reach some decent amount eaten… Eggs and meat (roasted pork or some other proper one), I can’t eat these two in moderation (unless I am very bored with them and I have other options). But they are my staples so it’s fine. I can overeat them if I mess with my timing (and have a significant amount of carbs in my previous days, I suppose. more than 3 days on carnivore and I just don’t overeat in average. I may have a high-cal day but that’s normal for me).

Oh in the beginning I banned fried cauliflower  I simply couldn’t eat less than 1000g (weight of the raw cauli) at one sitting, it was the minimal amount for me and even my generous carb wasn’t enough for that. Vegetables feels like nothing to my body so I only felt the urge to stop after a big amounts of it (2 liters of some light, not satiating, wet vegetable dish, I did that a few times). I was a veggie lover too. Bad combo.
Carnivore changed me and now I don’t want most vegs and only a tiny bit from the rest. It helped with my added fat consumption too as vegs always brought a lot.

Oh but I remember one! Not necessarily overeating, it depends on the circumnstances but it may be dangerous. Pork jowl. Nice processed stuff, the label says 786 kcal/100g. So it’s mostly fat tissue, cooked and wonderful but there is the tiny meat I need (unless I put it into scrambled eggs but that limits the amount. still brings lots of calories)… I eat it with… I forgot, 500-1000 kcal/min speed? It’s satiating but usually not immediately and anyway, this speed and its irresistibleness and me are a tricky combo. But if I want OMAD and I get quite satiated after 800-1000 kcal, not being able to eat anymore eggs or normal meat and need another 600-800? It’s my item  Or when I eat too lean meat for some strange reason.

I couldn’t eat much cheese or bacon if I tried. I can overeat almost anything but certain things are impossible for me in more than tiny amounts. Booze is the same (at least the low-carb kind).

Whipped cream… I stop myself now but 100g whipped cream is, like, nothing. 100g normal cream lasts for several days but when it whipped, it gets that fun texture and I love fun texture and it’s so easy to eat… It’s good I never had more than that.

(Will) #13

Nuts of any kind, peanut butter and I eat zero “keto” desserts as I’ve tamed my sweet cravings and hope to continue that

(Robin) #14

heavy whipping cream is the one thing I will never give up.

(Butter Withaspoon) #15

I bought myself a big bag of roasted salted macadamias for my birthday, since I declined cake. I suppose i did eat them at a faster rate than plain almonds but they’re too expensive so I won’t be having them often. Pretty darn tasty tho!!

I’m so Healthy rn that overeating something nutritious would just provide energy for the next day. It balances out

(Laurie) #16

@Hallie I’m glad you’re feeling healthy! I was wondering how you were doing.

(Robin) #17

Heaven!

#18

I distance myself from all cream, they still happen here and there but I can imagine I won’t have any in the next months
Sour cream is what I am still clinging to as it suits my savory food (I only use cream for desserts. if we consider coffee a dessert, it’s semi-dessert to me? it doesn’t matter it’s never sweetened). And quark/cottage cheese, that’s even protein rich and has its uses!

#19

Porkskins. But pretty much cut them out when I realized they are likely fried in peanut oil which is an omega 6. Many also add flavorings (BBQ) which have MSG.

#20

I went zero carb.
That says it ALL about me and any food list
