I’m doing keto but having a hard time picking food.
I understand to fully stay within 40 or less carbs a day. (I try to stay under 10 max). The thing is I noticed alot of products says made with Cane Suar but then the Nutritional Facts on the label shows zero sugar or added sugar. I noticed alot of meats have cane sugar in their ingredients as well but shows zero. For example I bought this yesterday and I looked at the ingredients and didn’t say cane sugar and has zero sugars in the Nutritional Facts but then on the other side it says “Made With Cane Sugar”. Does this item have sugar? Also I been staying away from meats that have cane sugar in their ingredients even though it shows 1 carb. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!
Food that says made with Cane Sugar but label shows zero sugars?
They are making the serving size tiny so they can round down. I make everything myself so I know what’s in it.
So definitely stay away from it? Appreciate the info. Makes sense about rounding it down. Wouldn’t it be in the ingredients as well though or is it hidden as natural flavors probably?
That’s why I steer away from things with labels. It’s hard, but I try to stick with real and fresh food. While my husband still buys junk (like Cheetos) and has the restraint to eat four of those little buggers a day. Drives me nuts! Who operates like that?
If I saw that a food had 1 carb per teaspoon I wouldn’t eat it. I have to keep my carbs under 20 per day so it wouldn’t be worth it to me. You will find that food labels are very tricky with their ingredients and advertisements. For instance you will see something that says in big letters, “Sweetened with Stevia”. It’s true. But stevia is the last ingredient and Maltitol is the first.
You could eat it, but at 1g per TBSP… that’s not a lot of salsa. I guess it depends what you’re doing with it. Since you won’t be scooping it up with chips I’d assume you won’t eat that much of it? You can eat it but it’ll add up fast. If you limit to 20g/day just keep that in mind.
The labeling laws in the United States permit manufacturers to determine their own serving size. If the amount of sugar in a serving is less than 0.5 g, the manufacturer is allowed to state “0 g” of sugar (this is why it’s important to also read the list of ingredients; good for you that you did so!). If the amount of sugar is under 1.0 g in a serving, the manufacturer is allowed to say “less than 1 g.” When I see sugar in the list of ingredients, and the amount in the nutrition panel is 0 g, I always assume that the amount per serving is 0.499999999999 g. When sugar is listed in the ingredients and the amount in the nutrition panel is “less than 1 g,” I always assume an amount per serving of 0.999999999999 g. This seems to work pretty well.
I have actually found a few Salsas with no sugar listed in the ingredients, but I usually make my own.
Herdez is one brand with no added sugar…
I bet they adjust their serving size until they get a 0.49999. I have a 2 ounce jar of seasoning and there are 92 servings.
That is precisely what the U.S. labelling laws allow them to do.
