Food items to have on KETO

(Colin Reid ) #1

Hey all.

First post here. I am just making sure that I am doing this KETO diet correctly and on the right path? Recently I have been having these foods:

2/3x eggs for scrambled eggs with a dash of milk and sprinkled cheese.
Chicken or Pork or Tuna with spinach and sprinkled cheese or some light mayo or 1x avocado.
Same again for dinner.
Throughout the day I would have brazil nuts.

Thanks for your time!

Sounds pretty keto to me…

I went over 20 carbs today accidentally with almonds. I could have done the same with Brazil nuts. Nuts are sneaky bastiges. Make sure to keep a close eye on them, the carbs creep up!

I think most of us like to avoid snacking. Definitely not on nuts.
Go for the fattier meat on the chicken, like skin and thigh meat.

You might try cheese or heavy cream in place of the milk. Milk has enough milk sugars in it that you want to be a bit careful. Cheese has less, especially if it’s hard cheese that has been aged. And heavy cream has the least.

As far as snacking is concerned, you might try eating more at your meals, so that you don’t want a snack. The point of a ketogenic diet is to lower insulin levels to the extent possible, and every time we eat, the pancreas secretes more insulin.

Are you talking lactose specifically because in carb terms (per 100g/ml admittedly) heavy cream has more carbs than most hard cheeses?

Lactose and galactose. In the U.S., you have to be careful with cream, because they often add emulsifiers and dextrose for some reason.

Many half-hard cheese has zero carb, it seems. At least the ones I buy… I have cheddar now, that’s 0.1g/100g according to the label (I love the labels here :D). My usual Gouda and the others have 0.
Cream has lots of sugar (from my viewpoint, I am careful with lactose… except when I eat sour cream…), that’s why it’s so sweet. We only have 30% whipping cream here (and weaker ones I don’t buy normally) so I can only talk about that.

I think it sounds good. Do not be afraid of fat so use mayo rather than light mayo. I would also try to make sure that you eat enough at your meals so snacking can be very limited. Good luck Colin!!!
