Finally had to say it

(Nathan Hall) #21

When’s the last time she asked a vegan or vegetarian that question? They have their reasons for their diet choices, I have my reasons for mine.

(Lucrecia) #22

Yup. This was my feeling precisely. I think sugar addiction makes, drugs/alcohol/gambling/porn/shopping/nicotine/etc look like child’s play in comparison. And yes, nobody wants a sober person hanging out at the bar with them while they get drunk!

(Michael Wallace Ellwood) #23

I actually had the courage the other day to say to my mother (who was busy trying to press fruit salad and ice-cream on me): “You wouldn’t offer an alcoholic alcohol, would you?”. She spluttered a bit, and said “oh no it’s not the same at all”. I just quietly said that it was, and then changed the subject.

My family (mother, siblings, aunts, etc) are just of the opinion that if you’re under their roof (even just passing by briefly ) they have to feed you. They don’t understand that most of the time, I’m literally not hungry, don’t need or want to eat. It sometimes comes over that I disapprove of what’s on offer (sometimes that is in fact the case), and it’s often quite difficult to refuse it tactfully.

Gets a bit wearing sometimes though.

But somehow, they get to inhabit the moral high-ground, while we are just foolish people stuffing ourselves with fat which will clog our arteries, etc, etc.

(Chrissy Smith) #25

I have made dinner plans with a friend THREE TIMES and she cancelled every time. Yet she keeps texting me, asking me questions about keto. The next minute i see her facebook posts of what she is eating out at a restaurant. I assure you that whatever it is, it wasn’t keto.
I miss my friend. I don’t bring it up unless she asks. But i know my new WOE is what is driving a wedge between us. I totally understand your frustration with your friend. I wish you the best in figuring it out.

(Felicia) #26

I say it like she says: I can’t eat that delicious cake. To me, that is true, and other people understand it easily. I don’t feel sad about not eating it, and the (longer) truth is: I can’t eat it without it causing me trouble, and I don’t want trouble. Also, when I say that the food that I can’t eat is delicious, it communicates that I am not pointing out how wrong their diet is.

(Dave) #27

I always feel like a spoil sport at work. I have started a new job and they said don’t bring your lunch tomorrow because they are providing lunch. I was always the goose who refused to eat what the boss put on at my last last workplace too. How rude am I :frowning:

(yvette.kane) #28

I just say due to my health issues, I will bring my own and still join in. They don’t often ask and If they do, I say sugar gives me migraines and I am in bed for days after. Just not worth taking the chance on most foods. You enjoy though.

(Michelle) #29

She asked me last night if I am still on this diet! And then proceeded to tell me about this article she read on how the tech guys are going keto/lowcarb. I looked for the article, which doesn’t exactly depict keto in a good light.

(betsy.rome) #30

$37 million startup funds! and all to make an online company to coach T2D customers on keto, the extreme diet which such tremendous drawbacks (sarcasm mode ON): headaches, crankiness & mood swings. Oh, and their diabetic numbers become normal, another side effect. CNBC is just looking for “news” content, the only story here is to get ready for corporate Amerika to figure out how to make $$$ off of eating fewer kinds of processed foods & fasting.

(Jacquie) #31

Don’t you love it when people who know nothing about a subject, all of a sudden, become ‘experts’.

Virta, is the company started by Phinney and Volek.

#32

It is a shame that we need little white lies to smooth things over socially; but, this “migraines” is a good one that I will pull out when the time is right.

(Barbara M) #33

‘Virta’ was just a segment on the TV show, The Doctor’s in the past few weeks . So, it doesn’t surprise me that it is now in the spotlight and being examined and discussed by others.
You know how in depth a 10 minute segment on a TV program can be. (sarcasm font).

Great response!

(jketoscribe) #35

On the main Instant Pot Face Book page (not related to any particular diet or way of eating) someone asked if the Instant Pot could help her prepare food to lower her cholesterol. Out of about 100 responses, most suggested keto type foods (a few extolled the virtues of eating oatmeal to lower cholesterol–insert eye roll here), except for one person who tried to admonish the OP and others that “all that fat” was going to raise her cholesterol and give her cardiovascular disease. The best part, everyone just ignored that remark! (Since it’s not a health or diet lifestyle page, no point in arguing nutrition with the unenlightened there).

It was nice to see the tide turning toward low carb/keto.

(Kathryn) #36

Yes, giving more information about Dr Whal’s could be helpful. She does Keto (not consistantly) and has lots of helpful information on healing and healthy eating.
At least share the information and let your friend decide if that is something to read up on or follow up on. They can’t do it if they don’t know it as an option.
Just as Keto was for me. I had a friend share it as an idea!

(David) #37

Yes. A little sadly that are very pro-conventional medicine. What the doctors say is gospel. I had a chat about auto immune issues and inflammatory food groups, but there was a sense that “it was worth it” to have the snorkeling rather than cut out the offending for groups. I suppose this is all personal freedom, and, if course, they may be right. It just doesn’t seem that way to me.

(Deb N.) #38

Go you! Stay strong. There’s something really insidious about someone who attempts to foist “treats” on you that are going to jeopardize your health to that extent. And let’s not even get me started on that food service staff. Oy!

(Lelayna Hernandez) #39

It sucks when the people closest to you don’t support you. I just started 5 days ago but my mother has been texting me keto friendly lasagna recipes so that I can choose one that she can make for Christmas. I am lucky that my family understands and supports my decision to go keto.

(Steve Stephenson) #40

I disagree; I think the article was positive. Hopefully it will pique people’s interest in learning more about keto – famous rich people are doing it, so it must be a good thing.
