Few questions, on day 11

#1

Hi, new to Keto and the forums. I’ve been trying to stay under 20 carbs a day and get some protein and fats but I’ve started noticing that I’m just not very hungry. Like at all. I’m bit worried I’m not getting all my nutrients and I was wondering will my appetite bounce back? Or is this just the new feeling? Do most people take supplements and if so which ones? Realized my old vitamins had carbs in them so I stopped taking them. :grimacing: I’m loving the weight loss and this crazy euphoric feeling I have when I wake up (I’m guessing that’s just because I’m new to this?). But I’ll get to 3pm and I’ll look at the clock and realize I haven’t eaten anything when normally I’d be hungry at noon on the dot. Also I did IF before I started keto so I’m used to eating in an 8hour window, but I was also really hungry in that window before keto. Should I just chill out and go with it? Sorry if this is too much fretting. This almost seems… too easy. I’m scared I’m missing something :joy:

Not hungry is a good thing if you’re trying to lose weight. Remember, your body is now using stored body fat, so you don’t need to eat all the fat that an online calculator might indicate you need.

Just be sure to keep carbs low (so you stay in ketosis) and make sure you get enough proteins (your body needs them). Prioritize the protein over fat if you need to.

If you do get hungry outside of meals, eat something that is mostly fat, a few proteins, but as few additional carbs as possible. My “go to” is a slice of pepper jack cheeses with a couple slices of Canadian bacon. Just fold over and eat.

Thank you. Good idea on snack and I should work on upping my protein levels. Losing weight is definitely one of my goals so I’lm Just embrace it. After avoiding fat for so long I think I’m finally finding what satisfies me with keto.

My fav snack is pork rinds and sour cream or some macadamia nuts.

Welcome to the best forum ever.

Yes, nothing to worry about. As mentioned you’re in ketosis and burning your own body fat and that’s what you came for. Right? Keep the carbs sub-20. You’re going to shed a lot of water, so stay hydrated and make sure to get lots of potassium and sodium to keep your electrolytes up since they will be excreted in the water.

When I began keto this time around I went for pork rinds as well. I tried all sorts of condiments to make them palatable and liked best hot salsa. But I finally had to admit they just suck big time. Macadamia nuts on the other hand… :stuck_out_tongue:

Did somebody say macadamia nuts?

Very true. Happy that it’s working. I guess I’m just shocked :joy:

I read in some other posts some sugar free electrolyte recipes. Should I go ahead and start drinking those daily or is that something you only do if you’re cramping/dizzy?

Use the search function for “keto aid”. Lots of people drink it and it’s easy to make and many drink it daily. I do not however, and I know that I need to up some of my minerals but I don’t want to drink a salty concoction. I recently realized I am falling short on potassium and calcium.

Based on the low end of the RDA for each mineral I mix: 15gr table salt, 35gr potassium salt (I use NoSalt) and 4gr magnesium salt (ordinary epsom salt). I grind everything together in a mortar/pestle to mix and grind into a fine powder to dissolve easier into water. This makes a 10 day supply with a daily dose of 5.4gr dissolved in 500ml of water. It tastes slightly salty and not at all ‘icky’ so requires no additional flavouring to make it palatable. You could make more and/or increase the daily dose if you think you need more electrolytes. Keep the proportions about the same, however. The balance between sodium and potassium is important, you need about 2x the potassium than sodium.

I am going to replace the table salt with Redmond Real Salt since it’s a good source of sodium plus a lot of trace minerals that table salt lacks. That will require modifying the recipe to something like 20gr Real Salt, 40gr NoSalt and 5gr epsom salt since the concentration of sodium in Real Salt is a little less than plain table salt.

Hellow Seawitch and welcome.

The sudden lack of hunger when doing keto is perfectly natural. I’ve noted this happens with lots of people in the forum and with myself as well. It was as if my body had an epiphany once it realized it could run almost exclusively on ketones made from body or dietary fat. It decided that since I already had a fair amount of body fat, eating less seemed like a good idea.

No worries though because the hunger does return. The more we lose, the more likely our body is going to react to what it sees as an unending trend of losing body fat. Your hunger hormones are not broken, they are just taking a little vacation. Enjoy it while you can.

You definitely don’t have to eat if you aren’t hungry  I worried at first I would lower my metabolism by not eating enough but it turns out my body was making up the calories it needed by getting them off my ass lol. After about 7 months my appetite returned.

Thanks for the info. According to my nutrients I’m not getting enough potassium, sodium, or magnesium. I haven’t cramped or anything but there was one day I felt dizzy and weird. Then I added salt to my coffee and I felt better. I might give this a go.

Whoops. I meant this as a reply. I’m terrible at forums :grimacing:

I’m struggling with this now. Done keto for many years but went off and now I’m in my 2nd month back on and I kinda just hate all food right now. I have to force myself to eat for fear I won’t get enough calories and stall because I’m already doing ultra low carb and working out. In the past I lost my appetite for a couple of months but 2 years into keto it came back with a vengeance. I think it’s because I got so lean and my leptin levels kept flat-lining. If you’re concerned about your electrolytes then you should get bloodwork done. I wouldn’t worry about substituting them unless you know for sure or are symptomatic.

Good idea. I’m going for a checkup next month. Then I’ll have a few weeks of this under me so maybe he’ll be able to see a difference. Good luck with your journey too!

I add 1gr of my dry electrolyte mix to my keto coffee. When I started doing so the flavour of the coffee intensified noticeably!
