Feeling Cold During Fast

(Brian Miller) #1

This is only my second fast that I’m attempting and this time I feel cold. The 1st fast went 38 hours with no issues at all however, this time I’m only about 20 hours into it and especially my hands feel cold. It is colder inside today than it was the other day but I am kinda surprised at how cold I feel.

I’m not sure why that happens but I’m experiencing that myself. I’m into my 7th day of fasting but breaking my fast because I’ve been cold the last couple of days and my feet are like ice cubes. I’ve accomplished what I wanted with my BP and BG numbers so I’m breaking the fast and probably switching over to IF with plans for another 5-7 day fast in 6 weeks or so.

For me, at least, when I get cold, I begin to wonder if that’s my body telling me it is not getting enough energy and I may need to add some fat.

I’m at around 20% body fat at this point, and according to @richard’s post on why fasting is easier for some people:

I probably do not have enough body fat any more to supply my body’s full energy needs. So for someone like me, I may need to supplement fat in order to prevent lowering my basal metabolic rate during fasting.

Just something to consider if you’re in a similar position.

Another thing to try is some salt water, as I think some folks have mentioned that they experience cold when their electrolytes are out of whack.

I’m around 35% body fat so I should be able to produce what I need and did so just a week ago with no issue.

I just completed a 14 day fast and definitely experienced coldness on 2 days. I have plenty of excess fat around my gut.

I just put more layers on and took some hot showers.

It happens. It has been suggested to take in a little fat e.g., a tablespoon of butter or coconut oil to bump the metabolism.

Update- I intended to wake up today and break the fast at 36 hours however, I woke up both warmer and less “hungry” than when I went to bed. Now I’m thinking of calling it off tonight at the 48 hr mark only because we planned as a family to make some delicious Carlshead Pizza. I did have a BPC this morning (butter and MCT oil only).
