Ok so I have heard it explained over and over that you have to have zero insulin and under 20 carbs for fat to come outta “storage”. Ive lost weight before, over 100 NOT keto, where one month I ate 15 lbs potatoes and nothing else. I see people eating twinkies and lose weight. I been on Keto 2 months solid this time, around 10 carbs, 1500 calories and my weight is the same for 3 weeks, down to the decimal. Ok this is two questions really. Why the stall? Ive tried to search the internet on my own to answer, and the second it, if the “freezer” scenario is true, how can people who spike their insulin still lose weight?
Fat in the Freezer
Is there a lot of stress in your life? Do you have any medical conditions? Are you taking medication? Too much dairy? Too many nuts? Artificial sweeteners? There could be a number or reasons why your body has not authorized lypolysis.
What are you eating in a typical day? Tell us a bit about yourself.
Im in ketosis I check daily. But i do use small amount of equal in my coffee.
Indeed.
Where you got the idea one is striving for “zero insulin” I cannot fathom (nor do I even understand what that means)
I strongly suggest you listen to some podcasts/read some of Dr. Jason Fung’s work or the 2KetoDudes podcasts to get a basic understanding of pancreatic physiology and the role of insulin.
Because they oxidize sugar better and the sugar is metabolized by uptake in the muscle tissue; they have more lean body mass (not stored as fat in adipose cells) than adipose mass but eventually the high carb sugar diet takes its toll.
Eating potato’s ONLY will put you in ketosis real fast, if you don’t believe me check your ketones with a ketone blood meter? However, this only works if you don’t have a fatty liver (variable insulin resistance) which means you need to take care of the fatty liver first before the HAM:RS2 diet will work, and the only way to do that even on a high or low carb diet is to get more Choline (from eggs) in your diet to get the fatty liver (if true) under control.
I usually boil and cool the potato’s in the fridge three or four times before I actually eat them; to make sure they are real resistant starch and eat them with salt and pepper only for a couple of weeks or more depending on how much weight I want to lose; then resume my keto regimen with fat, protein (that includes fish) and veggies (leafy greens), I don’t chop the potato’s up, I just keep them whole and in a bucket in the fridge.
Holy cow, @CarlKeller That’s better than eating carbs and feeling like you are speeding through a school zone. Love the way you phrase things.
If you are drinking coffee with equal once a day, it’s probably not a big deal. But if you are drinking it all day long, it can have a constant insulinogenic effect.
Seemingly small things can hang us up when we are trying to lose weight. I know for me, too much butter and nuts led to about 300 unnecessary calories per day. A few days ago, I noticed Dr. Ken Berry said he had to stop creaming his coffee because it was making him stall.
I think if you try to simplify your diet, you might find some success. Consider going carnivore for a few weeks .
Heckyeah I agree.
@240lbfatloss also uses the term lipolysis which is far more to the point than keeping the focus on ketone production which is a by product of the process.
I get that giving it a cute name attracts more folk. But it seems to cause much poorly understood focus on ketone production per se rather than actual understanding of the process.
Hey Carl! Thanks so much. I have 2 cups every morning and thats it. but to be fair the last few weeks I had 3-4 Pepsimax it was that or fall off Ketosis, and I didnt wanna do that. Maybe the aspartame is the problem. but still the calories are 1000 below maintence so I dont get it. I love Dr. Berry, and totally can get on board with carnivore. I drank my coffee black for 3 weeks, and no difference.
Ok maybe not zero insulin my bad, but everything I have been reading and watching talks about insuplin spikes, to keep insulin down ect. maybe i said it wrong dont get hung up on my wording…LOL
Well said!
Some studies say aspartame does not spike insulin while others say they do. Here’s a graph from one study that found that aspartame raised insulogenic levels much higher than table sugar after a meal. By itself, aspartame doesn’t seem to do much harm but it seems to act as a catalyst when we start adding food to the equation.
Yeah the “diet” pop often causes problems with peoples weight loss. I personally think it causes obesity. Do I ever drink one? Rarely, but I do indulge in Las Croix sodas for a Change from my purified water.
People do lose weight on low fat diets as well. Not everyone can but younger people are more insulin sensitive as a rule and may be successful. But generally it is unsustainable and causes more fat to be regained and loss of lean mass.
Keto is great in that it changes how your body uses energy, minimizes lean weight loss and is satiating.
Stalls happen. I don’t know how many weeks I went with no loss seen but quite a few. Now I’m below goal and can’t seem to not lose. (Maybe I should drink more diet soda? )
@Happyheart, if it’s the fizz you dig (I am a former Coca Cola addict and adore carbonation) seltzer is almost as good; I add TrueLemon -not the flavored ones, the one that’s just plain lemon, nothing added- and it makes for a refreshing lemony fizzy experience
I follow Dr Fung, too I have been fasting for 40 hours, and had a few diet drinks. I t doesnt make me want to eat, in fact just the opposite. I cant see the harm I thank you for all your input to helping
Ah HA!! calorie restriction - the old wives tale that will NOT die.
Do not restrict your calories on Keto WOE. Only limit carbs. It is quite possible that by restricting calories, you have driven your body to hod on to its fat stores for DEAR LIFE!
Read and understand the insulin obesity connection on Jason Fung’s blog or wherever. Then, control carbs, stop snacking, and stop calorie restriction. Eat when hungry, stop when full, don’t eat when not hungry (regardless of time of day)
Also, tell us a bit about yourself - age, weight, sex (likely female) etc.
I have been watching Dr Fung today, and I get what youre saying about the calories. Im almost 47 hours fasting, and the pain is considerably less. Yes, Female, 57, and I weight too much. Ive been doing nothing else for 2 months but watching you tube, and keeping my carbs less than 10
